I use motor oil as my preferred hinge and spring lube. As for the mid rail kicker, I say yes. Just for the added stability

I used to put "S Hooks" in those slide locks

For center hangs I wouldn't say a kicker is really neccesary, it wouldn't hurt but as long as you have a kicker in the back it'll probably be alright
