Double cut and fine cut actually work really well on aluminum in larger sizes too as long as you go lower speeds and don’t push too hard they don’t get loaded up. Perfect for learning to port because they remove material slower.

4:03 the first burr is a double cut burr. That's ideally what you want for finish cuts in stainless. Double cut burrs have serrations in two different directions as shown that will shear the chips into small pieces. With stainless and harder material that's ideal. A long single cutting edge will produce long stringy chips. In a hard material like stainless that will cause the burr to bite too aggressively and pull. By the way, this isn't info for you Dave. This is for the audience 😂 just trying to spread some machinist knowledge. Back to watching the video lol To Geoff's work hardening comment, work hardening is done through too much heat. If you're work hardening a part as you cut it with a carbide burr, you need to put the burr down and step away lol. You will not work harden a part by using a burr CORRECTLY 20:00 the "pitch" you're referring to is known as the helix of a burr or end mill. A straighter, shallower helix would be good for soft material like aluminum or plastic. The shallow helix will "scoop" material out at a faster rate. The downside is it will bite and grab VERY easily. A steep helix (40*-60*+) will promote shearing of the chip. The burr will not want to "walk" away from the cut zone as much, and will aid in shearing the material from the surface. This is perfect for hard materials. A good way to learn the differences is to Google the difference in end mill geometry between say a 3/4 flute aluminum mill and a 4/5/6 flute end mill for harder materials like stainless, inconel, monel etc. Stainless is considered "hard/harder" than say cast because of the higher nickel content (roughly 5%). Other high nickel materials include inconel and hastelloy. Those are very fun to machine. Sorry, the machinist in me is getting excited 😅

A straw on the shaft really helps me when porting. I can actually hold the shaft and direct the burr a bit better without turning my skin to melted wax. But can't apply too much pressure or the straw will heat up. Also helps with a bit of protection for the rest of the work piece

@headgames "hold" was probably not the right word. I don't really grab it. I put the shank between my fingers like someone holding a cigarette or one finger on top for light pressure. The shanks are 6" long. But I port motorcycle heads. Smaller ports and need to finesse a bit more. Started with the 5vy engine which is a yamaha 20valve head. 5 valve per cylinder so being meticulous with the ol 2 fingers ✌️ helped.

Would think for having been used, it may have annealed the material by being heat cycled? Don’t know shit ‘bout heat treating stainless, but, then there’s also the question of what kind of stainless it is, especially for being a cast part.

our 2013 is at 120k, big turbos since day 1. Our 2017 is at 140k, big turbos also. Depending on your condition and state of maintenance I wouldnt worry too much about mileage
