In depth explanation of how a headset is assembled. This one specifically is for the Giant Trance but this can translate to any headset assembly.
This headset specifically is a ZS44x1-1/8 upper with a ZS56x1-1/2 lower.

I literally just recorded that half second clip for funzies. I'm glad you appreciate it. I have another video where I cut a steerer tube down and added chain-saw sounds.

Once again, brilliant job, bravo. Can you please do a video on bleeding Shimano hydraulic brakes, I've tried several times but never gotten my brakes any better, if you could point me in the right direction that would be excellent. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the kind words. This bike has MT520 brakes that I will be bleeding. There are a ton of videos, I will see if I can add something special for mine.

Clear presentation, thanks. So it seems that after applying the preload (via star nut), the compression ring will "press fit" with both the steer-tube and the inner race of the upper bearing such that the steer-tube is relative "fixed" with both the compression ring and the inner race, i.e., the only relative-moving parts when rotating the handlebar are the bearing balls and inner/outer races. And the same goes to the crown ring as for the compression ring. Is the understanding above correct? I did not find any explicit explaination on this aspect. Thanks a for the video again.
@skitz502
@skitz502 10 күн бұрын
Yup, that is essentially correct. The most important part is that the compression ring removes the lateral play in the steerer tube.

I've been searching for a video like this. I have a 2018 Trance Advanced 2 that needs new headset bearings (upper and lower), it feels 'scratchy' when I spin the bars. Any advice on a good websites in the US where I can purchase a bearing replacement kit?

Is there a slacker headset bearing you can recommend for a 2015 Trance 1?

Thank you VERY much... would it kill giant to just give the industry standard spec instead of there proprietary naming convention...

Another great video...Do you have a video on Giant Trancr rear hub disassembly and reassembly? My 2021 (bought in 2022) has slight play and my LBS said it could be normal and asked me to just ride it and see if it gets worse...it's unacceptable...

Giant has been all over the place with their hubs lately. It is very likely that you have the newer, Giant-made hubs. The freehub body is not serviceable. To remove it, you have to remove the axle and remove the NDS bearing. This will give you access to the FHB from the opposite side. A lot of torque and a 14mm Allen will pop it out.

It's just a standard FSA tapered headset bearing. It is the most common size on the market.

Hi, great vid. Do you have the outer diameter measurement of the upper headset bearing? Planning to replace mine (Trance 3 2018). Thanks!

the OD is 41mm. The writing on the side will help you out too. It is "TH MR122 1-1/8 36° 45°L9" "MR122" refers to the standard size name, "1-1/8" clearly refers to the steerer tube size (the ID is 30.15mm). The " 36°" and "45°" refer to the angle of the inner race taper and the outer race taper respectively. I'm not sure what the "TH" and "L9" are supposed to represent. The FSA name for this headset is "Number 55".
