The glass and sandpaper is good, but lay the cloth flat out single layer on top the plywood instead of bunched up under the glass. Bunched up can allow the glass to flex a few thousandths and negatively affect the surface flatness

you have great patience for the use of hand tools, I'd be slapping a hand belt stander across that thing faster than you can say lung dust. that being said, I'd also ruin it 5x before I even got to this stage

Tried that with the bench belt sander. It's not stable enough.
