I purchased this kayak about 45 days ago as my first kayak, I’ve been out a dozen or so times. I’m 6’6, 250# and size 13 shoes. I wear Merrill hiking shoes when I’m out and no issues with pedaling and clearance. The prop comes with an extra shear pin should you hit something hard. Steering no issue and I’ve banged it around, just being new. It cuts through the water amazingly well and when you are fishing the pedal drive makes it easy to stay in position. The pedal drive on mine is quieter than this video makes it sound and it came with a simple b&w printed maintenance manual. The seat is extremely comfortable. Overall I think it is a great kayak, the price is just a bonus. Changes I would like to see: convert the front open bow to covered storage like the non pedal drive, incorporate a cup holder into sidewall, move the front seat clip closer to seat so you have more room to work with.

Clearly some shuffling around between brands by Joy Sports/Feelfree. The Field & Stream Shadow Caster went to the Seastream brand now that Dick's is no longer selling it, just like the Cabelas Advanced Angler went to the 3 Waters brand as the Big Fish. Really glad to see that it's not just plain gone, and now there's a pedal drive version. Having paddled and motorized my Shadow Caster, I'm not surprised at all that it's a pretty fast pedal kayak. Sweet! Thanks for the review!
@HeadwatersKayak3 жыл бұрын
Yes Dicks decided to go with even cheaper brands like Pelican and Future Beach, however, Joy Sports owned the mold, so they were able to rebrand it and expand the line to more models. Then Cabelas got bought out by Bass Pro and they own Ascent Kayaks, so the AA got pushed out. Honestly its a huge win for small retailers, as now we have something to compete with at that price, and joy sports has the freedom to do boats like the Big Fish 103 Pedal and the Angler 120 PD, that the box stores would have never messed with. So in a way we owe them thanks for paving the way and helping pay for the mold!
@Internetpilot3 жыл бұрын
I also noticed that Dick's now has the Vibe Yellowfin and even the Sea Ghost. I'm just surprised they let the Shadow Caster and Eagle Talon, etc. go when it was re-branded under their Field & Stream store brand. I can see why Cabelas ended that relationship (since they were bought out), but the Shadow Caster was pretty much Dick's flagship kayak. Oh, well. I don't care as long as it's still available somewhere! And it is a big win for dedicated outfitter type shops to be able to sell these boats now. I still can't believe they made a pedal version! That's so awesome! Now, when is Headwaters going to get into the kayak shipping business so we can buy all the stuff in these great reviews from you?

How would this handle in saltwater marsh or offshore? There are some bouys offshore that have tons of Cobia on them and when the redfish are running I would be able to get out there to catch em too. There are also some oil rigs 700-800 yards out so I’d go out there and maybe catch some jacks or something. I’m super curious though so any info about it or how it’s held up for you please tell me anything. It’s a super budget kayak and I’m really wanting one. I’m 5 foot 9 150 pounds so this kayak would be amazing for me so I feel like I’d be able to ha die it well offshore or even at the end of the jetties. I’ll be tearing up some fish. My main concern is the pedal drive. It sounds like a chain and if it’s not waterproof I don’t want to spend money to replace every year. Have a great day!

Anyone have tips for this issue? I heard you could adjust the pedal drive to be tighter or looser or something to that affect, maybe then i wont need to put as much pressure on the pedals and wont push my seat back?
