Health Equity: How To Sustain & Scale Successes (3Ss)

Advancing health equity calls for a new kind of leader and a new approach to leadership development. A panel of Clinical Scholars alumni, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, shared how their collaborative and systemic approaches were successful in reducing health disparities and how they were able to sustain and scale those efforts.
The panel was moderated by Derrick Stephens, MBA, LCSW featuring:
Michael Hasselberg, PhD, RN, PMHNP-BC from the University of Rochester Medical Center
Justine Woolner Wise, LMSW from the Gender Wellness Center
Jeremy Fletcher, PT, DPT, OCS from Veterans Recovery Resources
Charles Moore, MD from the Grady Health System and Emory University
Tonita Smith, MSN retired public health nurse from the Army
Johanna Martinez, MD, MS from Northwell Health
These health equity leaders shared their personal and professional stories by responding to the following questions:
1. Can you speak to your personal journey and what shifts have you observed and how you approach your work and partnerships?
2. What did your team achieve? How did you define or redefine success over time?
3. What did sustainability look like for your wicked problem impact project?
4. How did you approach the scalability of your project?
Clinical Scholars Fellows who attended the panel highlighted several key takeaways including:
Be nimble
Be willing to be vulnerable
Be prepared with exit strategies
Use numbers and narrative to share the story of the problem and solutions
Listen and learn from your community and stakeholders
Don't create unnecessary adversarial relationships
Tell your story with intentionality and authenticity
