Health Update for our Lily

Many of you will know that Lily has had a few vet appointments of late trying to get to the bottom of some back and leg issues.
Last week she saw a specialist. He’s been in the field for 40 years and his colleague, 20 years.
Sadly, Lily has been diagnosed with an extremely rare degenerative disease only affecting German Shepherds. One that he has only seen twice in his time. Only one vet in the world is doing research into it and the treatment and he has only ever had 6 cases to study from.
It is called Gracilis Muscle Contracture.
It means that her muscles in her back legs scar/calcify and will continue to grow and scar over even with surgery. So surgery is not an option.
In approximately two years we will see the full affects of it. Her legs will completely fold up under her and she won’t be mobile. In other cases, this has lead to euthanasia.
Lots of things are going through our heads atm. But overall, we’re focusing on Lily having the best time of her life right now. She loves so many things about farm life and she’s going to live her life to the fullest. Luke can’t leave the house without Lily hot on his tail. If he ever leaves the property, she is the only dog that will sit right on the gate waiting for him to return. We’re not going to let Lily feel like there’s anything different.
Behind the scenes, the specialists are calling around the world to work out a treatment program that will slow down the process as much as we can. Physio, hydrotherapy etc. We’re told nothing will fasten it up. Her exercise regime should continue as that’s what she loves to do, so that doesn’t need to change.
If I’m the future, a dog wheelchair is an option, we will be getting her the Ferrari version. No question about it.
I’m having a little cry writing this right now. But we’re not going to let Lily know any different.
I’m sorry to share some sad news with you all. We were not expecting this at all. From here on it will be only happy days continuing for our Lil.

Lily is in the best home to deal with something like this. You can give her a variety of options for therapy based on the doctor's recommendation: long walks, running, swimming, or rest. And you are so attentive to all the dogs' behaviors that you'll notice if she's uncomfortable. Like I said, she's in the best place and she's loving her life.

Yes. That’s true. When you love your fur kids as much as Sam and Luke, it is heartbreaking when one of the is suffering. And yet, I know that for the love of each dog, they would choose the heartbreak however painful and all the other difficulties over not being there for the dog. That’s why there are so many in this community who cherish what they do and want to do whatever we can to support them. I have found that each time I’ve struggled with pet suffering or loss, there is comfort in knowing I gave them the best life they could enjoy, that their lives were made so much better with all the opportunities, treats and love that was showered on them.

So sorry to hear this is what is happening to Lily. Thank God she is in a home that has only the very best interests for her. Very glad she is not in pain as that makes a world of difference. I know hydrotherapy saved my shepherds life twice, but her problem was her hip and arthritis, not the muscle. So Lily, get them sticks and continue to dance!! Do what makes you happy sweet girl. Sounds like this vet will follow up with experts to formulate a plan that will help Lily. Two years research can find new and effective treatments of this disease. Stem cell treatment and hyperbaric chamber treatments have helped some diseases. All promising and hopeful. Lily will live her best life with her family. No doubt there. If it comes down to a wheelchair I feel certain she will still be able to dance with a stick in her mouth. Just so very glad she is with you Sam and Luke. I know almost nothing about dog's muscles. My back, muscles and hips are not happy but hydrotherapy helps. Lily Evans is a part owner of three pools /dam (one heated). Meanwhile Lily will travel up and down the bush tracks at the Farm with her friends. She will do her Lily dance, and find world class sticks. The Evans' family and all of us will love her all the more.

The main thing for me is: no pain. I hope Lily will remain carefree for years to come and adapt to things as they arise. Rare cases get lots of vet attention. Thank goodness they've stopped the experimental surgery. At least you know what's going on early and can monitor it. I think there will be a few more trips to the beach for Lily this Summer!

I’m sorry to hear about Lilly’s diagnosis, don’t give up hope. Her exercise regiment is so different then your average pet, so she can’t be compared to others that suffer from the same problem. I don’t know if your vet spoke or if he offers laser treatments to help break up the scar tissue. It’s something that is big in America and maybe worth looking into. I don’t know if it’s even offered in Australia. It’s use on scar tissues, inflammation, arthritis and to heal incisions after surgery. It’s even used on humans. My dog had hip dysplasia and he had laser treatments and it seemed to help him along with short walks, going swimming in the river or pool and plus medicine to maintain his pain afterwards. He passed away last year from ITP that was caused by a auto immune disease when he was 4, that I and the vets believe was caused by the vaccines, he lived to be 12 and I miss him every minute of every day. It was his death that brought me to your channel, my dog would have loved the farm, the walks , running, swimming and having fun with the others, no matter what size or temperament they had, he always found a friend. I just hope it’s what heaven is like for him now. All the best with Lilly, she is so sweet and couldn’t be in better hands.

I found this channel for the same reason when my younger pup crossed the Rainbow Bridge due to an aggressive tumour across her spleen and other organs. There's a saying around the world"One Day At a Time". That's all you can do Luke/Sam and for any of us, it's true. You never know from one day to another what can happen. Yesterday I found out a dear friend of mine has cancer with no options. I'm gutted but as someone said, the world keeps turning and life goes on. All we can do is show up and be there for our family, friends and our four legged fur barbies. Lily was meant to be at the farm. It is the absolute best place for her to be surrounded by so much love and the best care she can receive. My prayers are with you and also for her previous owner who loved her so much. 💜🐶❤️

Unfortunately it's all part of life's rich tapestry and the bad times are there to make sure that the good times are truly appreciated. I listened to that amazing Vet and thought he said it would not spread beyond her back leg, right? If that is correct, when and if it gets really bad for that leg, could an option be to amputate the leg? And, if needed, give her a "scooter." She would then be able to adapt and still have mobility. I ask only because I thought I heard the Vet say that euthanasia might be needed if it gets bad enough...(which did not make sense to me but I freely admit that I might not have heard everything correctly...)

Sorry to hear about Lily. Please look on the Internet about Professor Noel Fitzpatrick based in Surrey UK maybe he could give you some advice on Lily's condition . Also there is a company that makes custom wheelchairs for dogs. I will try to find out more about it. Take care and love to all. I have a soft spot in my heart for GS as had one many years ago. Always distressing to hear of these things in our precious babies (fur and human). Is there a near human equivalent of that condition that can look to for parallel treatment options? This world wide community might have some ideas to research?
