Urinary incontinence (UI), or the involuntary leakage of urine, represents a significant health concern affecting millions worldwide, impacting quality of life across various demographics. While often perceived as an issue primarily affecting older adults, UI can manifest at any age, influenced by a complex interplay of physiological, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
In this week’s episode, we will try to provide a comprehensive understanding of this prevalent condition and the various types of UI, including stress, urge, mixed, overflow, and functional incontinence. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the multifactorial etiology of UI, encompassing risk factors such as age, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, obesity, diabetes, neurological disorders, and certain medications. We will also address the often-overlooked impact of lifestyle choices, such as fluid intake, dietary habits, and physical activity, on bladder function.
Our expert speakers will discuss the various diagnostic tools and methods employed in evaluating UI, including patient history, physical examination, bladder diaries, and urodynamic studies. In addition, our speakers will provide an overview of current management strategies, ranging from conservative approaches like lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor muscle training (Kegel exercises), and bladder retraining, to more advanced interventions such as pharmacotherapy and surgical options.
Our main presenter is Dr. Joanne Karen S. Aguinaldo, who is an Associate Professor III from the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery of the UP-PGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Our reactors are Dr. Divine S. Macanip, who is a fellow-in-training from the same division, and Ms. Editha Valencia, who will provide her insights from the patient's perspective.
Join us as we foster a collaborative approach to managing UI, ultimately improving the lives of those affected by this common yet often underreported condition.
