Ash is a base. Solvent-like, just like acid, vinegar. Since you have the ash, it's easier then vinegar, and no schmell.

Maybe try wood Ash with vinegar, but you don't seem to need to wipe off the vinegar as much as you need more elbow grease to wipe off the water/wood ash mix. Vinegar was the better option in this case.

Nice job Chad! I recently bought a used wood stove which didnt look like it was cleaned in 20 years... lol... so I ended combining both your methods, wood ash with vinegar solution instead of water... And it did a great job, with a little bit of elbow grease 😊 Blessings!

It's all about pH(and a little abrasive with the ash). Vinegar has a low pH. Wood ash has a high pH. Just like oven cleaner.

I did the ash/water paste I saw on KZbin on another channel and had the “glass” 80% clean of black soot and some creosote in under five minutes. I started with a nylon brush which was nice because I could wash the brush in the garage sink. I finished with paper towels that cost me about a dozen towels. You do get to discard the paper bowl, paper towels in the fireplace so that’s a plus. I guess if I spent $3 on a Sunday paper I could save on paper towels.

Well season wood will burn Like a candle light flame, Bright white yellow. not orange, pink, blue, red, green ect ect. BUT BRIGHT WHITE YELLOW > If you see these other colors Purple, Orange, Red ect ect STOP BURNING IT
@426superbee48 ай бұрын
Also you may need to burn wet wood. But its harder to start, and Need HOT COALS TO KEEP IT BURNING. But your staying warm I can see burning un season and season wood> wet or dry, But if you can> burn it season and dry. To get that candle bright white yellow flame 👉👉 A GOLDEN YELLOW FLAME IS OK TO > Like my thumbs 👍👍

I wish your glass was black with creosote and smoke like ours gets instead of just 'tinted'. Our stove glass can get black in just one night's burn because we have to bank it down so low (too much stove). Yes, we burn seasoned wood and yes we store it under cover in a shed to keep it dry.
@HealthAndHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't let it get that black, sorry. We like to keep it pretty clean. But it would take us quite a while to get the whole thing black for us. We run it relatively hot.
@TheShmooty3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you need more draft, longer chimney, then less smoke buildup down bottom on your glass
@mic9823 жыл бұрын
@@TheShmooty More like less stove. My insistence on buying the Defiant model (Vermont Castings) over a smaller size was probably a mistake. It will burn clean if burned hot, but the amount of heat the Defiant puts out is too much for our home when burned hot enough to clean the glass. But it sure holds a lot of wood!
@mic9823 жыл бұрын
@@HealthAndHomestead I've come to the tested conclusion that burning hot is the answer to minimizing soot buildup, just as the stove manufacturers recommend. And therein lies our problem: too much stove. BTW, we tried the vinegar and yes, it works, but only with a lot of elbow grease. Unfortunately, the sodium hydroxide solution in the Red Devil stove glass cleaner works better. It's a semi-toxic substance, like Easy Off oven cleaner. But it works.
@TheShmooty3 жыл бұрын
@@mic982 could you burn smaller amount but hot?
@annaaron35108 ай бұрын
That's nothing on your 'glass' ( ceramic) If you heat 100% with a wood stove you'll get serious creosote buildup especially mornings after cool overnight fires. The wood ash and maybe vinegar will do for light stuff. Butt, if you use your stove hard for no central furnace heat, the glass buildup needs more serious removal. BTW: DON'T COVER FIREWOOD AS SHOWN WITH TARPS. We use paper towels soaked with cleaning vinegar, and new sharp razor blades to carefully scrape hardened creosote, then paper towels to clean residue. Bill is in the mail. JMNSHO

Cloth. Wet it. Drain excess water off. Dip the cloth into the ash in your stove. Wipe glass. BINGO it easily takes the stains off and then just wipe clean, then dry. 100% guaranteed to work. Easy.
@RobCummings5 ай бұрын
Tried both. For hard, baked-on carbon, only East Off oven cleaner worked. Spray the foam on cold glass and let it sit for an hour. Come back with a wet sponge and wipe the carbon away.

Retired last year and built a small log cabin in the foot hills of North Carolina. Watch this show before we had a fire in our stove. Used both methods, and both worked well. Then I remembered a used car sells man secret to cleaning windshields with just 0000 steal wool. This worked great, and with no water, the vacuum clean up was easy.

I'm cleaning my new glass on my new stove for the first time. The very first burn in the stove fell towards the glass and made it black. I was using expensive glass cleaner and getting pretty much nowhere when I decided to research and found you. I did exactly what you said with the ash and vinegar and it's shiny and new again. Easy. Do you really have a woodstove sitting directly on the wood floor of the room? How do local building codes feel about that setup I wonder. Seems dangerous.
@HealthAndHomestead2 жыл бұрын
You don’t want to sit them directly on the floor. Mine has tempered glass under it. That keeps coals from starting a fire on the floor. I have it to the specifications set forth by the manufacturer.
@HealthAndHomestead2 жыл бұрын
The tempered glass extends I believe 16, or 18 or even more in front of the door. It also extends around the sides and behind the wood stove. I made sure it does above and beyond code. I am a stickler to that. I would not shirk the codes. Plus you will easily burn the floor in front of a wood stove no matter how careful you are if you don’t have floor protection. Blessings.
