This has been at the top of my mind for a long time and the reason to have this podcast with Dr Abby Philips.
Dr. Abby Philips is a specialist in Hepatology and Liver Transplant. He did his MBBS, MD & DM and is the president's gold medal winner for academic excellence.
He has 200+ research papers published to him.
But there is an interesting other side of him.
He is known as TheLiverDoc on Twitter for his work as a crusader against all sorts of misinformation on health and pseudoscience.
He is a father of three an avid gamer and a graphic novel enthusiast🙂 Follow his work on Twitter lnkd.in/gHqX2jQD
There is a lot we discussed:
- The reason to be Liver Doc on Twitter. You know what I mean🙂
- How that happened and why it remains important.
- The universe of quackery & pseudoscience in nutrition, health & fitness.
- Healthcare landscape in India. How modern, alternative & integrative medicine works.
- Business of health and patient care.
- Debunking myths around supplements & nutraceuticals.
- Do's & Don'ts for individuals to create their own health protocols.
- Alcohol, Coffee, Artificial sweetener, Intermittent fasting, Proteins, Carbs, multivitamins, and much more.
- Life of a doctor beyond medical practice.
I've to say this upfront. This conversation is not to prove anything good or bad.
But to establish some tools and frameworks that everyone can use to create their own guardrail for health.
This is a 3hr+ podcast. I don't expect you to listen or watch it in one go. Maybe you should not. But when you finish, do make an attempt to relay your thoughts to improve the scientific temperament of people around us. That will improve their understanding of health.
There is a lot to takeaways from this conversation and I hope this is useful to you.

In one sentence he wants us to be more scientific

Excellent session. Great story telling by Doctor & wide array of medical facts discussed. In the times of widespread 'emotion' based pseudo science and mixopathy, this episode gives me hope that there are still rational and scientific minds available in the country, who will strongly root for evidence based medical practice. Thanks to Dilip for the session & his excellent moderator role too..

2:38:57 Dr. Philips may not be correct here. First of all, I am a huge fan and hats of to his work. Back to my commentary, Yes, body is going to process the macros the way it's designed to. But there is definitely a difference in the digestion process and rate at wich the macros are digested and absorbed into the blood stream. Let's take an example of eating plan sugar vs sugar mixed in with Fibre or even sugar after eating fiberous meal. The blood glucose spike after the meal would high in the 1st group. It might not be a big deal in a healthy person, might cause ill effects in diabetics. We do need more studies to recommend either one of them conclusively. Dr. Philips stating that there is no discernable difference in the way that body digests food wasn't the scientifically accurate thing. I understand, I am nitpicking, just wanted to state my opinion. Best wishes.

Doctor said that we don't need protein suppliment if we follow balanced diet. In fact ,we won't get enough protein from balanced diet as per .8gm per kg weight. I'm 76kg. I require 61g protein as per my weight. I will get 6 gm protein fron one egg and 22 GM protein from 100 gm chicken. So it's not possible to maintain adequate protein intake from a balanced food as you suggested. That means everybody needs protein suppliment

How unique are we from one another is the question. The workings of biology, chemistry and physics within the human physiology are non negotiable. For eg. I can find people who are lactose intolerant but has there ever been a human inhaling CO2 and exhaling O2. Over time these core scientific principles will be updated with more evidence and better knowledge/resources.
