In the EU, 95% of food comes from soil, yet more than half of lands are unhealthy. The EU’s Zero Pollution strategy aims for healthy soils by 2050. Green Valleys is a cross-border project between Sweden and Denmark that uses grass and clover to improve soil health. Increasing the proportion of grass and clover in the crop rotation has a whole range of benefits: they reduce the need for chemical pesticides, increase soil fertility, help store carbon in the soil and reduce nitrogen leaching to lakes and streams. This research project also processes forage crops into a protein concentrate that can be used to feed cattle or to produce biogas. It is also a way to reduce soy imports, thus benefiting the environment while creating business opportunities.
