A new treaty was written and signed in 1977 which ended the original treaty and gave the canal and the Canal Zone to Panama at the end of 1999. In addition to the treaties with Panama, the United States paid Columbia $250 million and obtained clear title to the land that was the Canal Zone in a treaty signed and ratified by both countries.
