@Ace Courage The best version of Victim of changes? Have seen them live several times, the first time promoting Defenders of the Faith, in Stockholm ´84. That night was pure magic and Victim of changes best song of the evening, even though they still performed with The Ripper and The Sinner in the set list, but Victim of changes is the best song ever written/recorded by Priest. The best version, Westfallenhalle/Dortmund december ´83. That festival they were kings in Dortmund/Germany, saw them one month later, January 21th 1984 in Stockholm Sweden. Judas Priest Rules, the greatest heavy metal band, of all time.

First time I saw them was in 1986 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. That was an awesome show. The best show by far was when I saw them at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. Glenn was still playing and Mastodon opened for them. WOW! what a awesome show. The Pearl Theater at the Palms is very small and intimate. I was about 10 feet from the stage! Can't wait for March...got tix for them at Zappos Theater here in Vegas. After that show it will be my 8th time seeing them.

I first heard it in 1977 when they played at a Day on the Green, opening for Led Zeppelin. OMG JP has been my favorite band ever since. Victim of Changes is so real to me. My first 2 Priest records were Sad Wings of Destiny and Stained Class, which I listened to over and over. I don't know how many shows I have been to anymore (cuz I'm old) But I am so bummed gonna miss the 50th anniversary tour. Closest they are playing to me is Berkeley, Ca and it's such a tiny venue it sold out right away. Anyway to answer your question, I like the 1077 version best, but that don't stop me from listening to any other version.

Ah, Victim of Changes is my favorite song and it's cool to hear bits of the final version in the early stages. I agree, I'm happy that they took the time to develop their sound before blending the two songs into Victim because they created a masterpiece! In my opinion, anyway. It's hard to pick a favorite a version, but perhaps the version from Live Vengeance - the concert filmed in Memphis on the Screaming for Vengeance tour. It was the first time I heard the song and was immediately hooked. Thanks for your insight and the cool vintage photos as well.

My favorite version of Victims is the one I saw live in 2011. Can not beat the feeling of listening live to the dual opening riff, inspite the fact that kk had left the band. Another Al atkins song that has an intriguing story is the song Chaviar and meths. An originally 14 min long song that only plays for 2 minutes on Rocka Rolla. The 7 minutes version by Al atkins on his solo album Victim of Changes is powerful.

I saw them perform in Atlanta , Ga in the 1980's for the second time. After the Fuel For Life tour. Rob introduced the song by saying " it is our favorite song of all ". I can now see why he said that. They developed while refining this song. The early versions sounded flat and one deminsional. When I heard it live for the first time it was refined and sophisticated with different movements. A rock classic.

Like metal itself, Victim of Changes evolved. There obviously was a lot of woodshedding between RR and SWOD on Priest's part, because they had to set themselves apart from bands like Queen and Kiss, who were already putting forward a more streamlined, uptempo, accessible vision of what metal could be (and I know the nerds will pipe in with "Bu-bu-but those bands weren't metal!" Easy thing to say in 2022 with three decades of EMG plus TS9- pushed 5150 half-stacks behind us already!)

Victim of Changes is a great song. I've always loved the version from 'Unleashed in the East' the best. It definitely had more of a "Metal" sound and feel to it by that time. Speaking about a Metal song... with the exception of the intro, I feel that 'Dissident Aggressor' from 'Sin After Sin' is the first "modern" Heavy Metal song. When Rob's scream comes in with the chugging palm muted guitars and then double bass drum groove, it's borderline "Thrash". If there's something more "Metal" before that... prove me wrong. 🤘

Before you saying it Vlad, I was also thinking, it all worked for the best when the record label didn't want to use the proto Whiskey Woman&Red Light Lady/V.o.c. prematurely as the initial bluespsychrock/hardrock version it was. Musicians (and Im one too) know there are endless ways of exploring, executing and combining themes, so letting something sit - just like maturing whiskey - can very well be for the best, especially if one still doesnt have an 'artistic brand' vision. Rocka Rolla is also an absolute must have, a great debut album which fortunately also gives the JP discography all the more diversity. I adore the trippy and hypnotic Run Of The Mill, Caviar And Meths (which imo should have been a longer instrumental) and One For The Road in which they asked some entity to 'show them the way' - and seemingly shortly after they certainly were 'shown the way', lol :D

They did invent the two guitar attack, were the precursors to speed metal. Everything prior was slow and droning like Black Sabbath. But they created the image that became associated with metal. They had to let Gull Records keep and own the rights to Sad Wings of Destiny and I believe Rocka-Rolla in order to leave and sign on with CBS Records. Too bad for KK isn’t in the band. Al Atkins is a nice guy. I thought I knew everything about Priest and he’s a stand up guy. But, it was Hell Bent for Leather (Killing Machine across the pond) and specifically a cover song that sucked until it was “Priestasized!” Just listen to the original version by the writers. Fleetwood Mac. Also, to hear what Priest heard from folk artist Joan Baez and to take Diamonds and Rust to where they did was ridiculously cool. Then to (in my professional opinion) go back to the acoustic version so that Rob, who live is shot. The studio wizardry (I mean that literally too! If you have never been offered a major label record deal as I was, you can’t understand without some serious life changing events as in “Hell No! I won’t leave my wife or sell my soul!” Elektra Records when I met with the A&R person in Chicago in a high rise had a mural on the wall that said “GOD IS DEAD.” It shocked me! When I asked her, “what’s that all about?” You would of thought I asked the time or temperature. “Oh, we’re Satanist’s.” Nice meeting you Tina. I will tell you to look for the X-Factor winner who could be dead by know. But he was going along but that was until one night he was asleep at the wheel and he said a very soft voice told him to wake up. The man has nailed everything I’ve come to learn about everything. And he’s lost everything as a result of telling the truth and most likely his life too. All these musicians that die young isn’t just a coincidence. Chris Cornell didn’t hang himself from a doorknob using a tie. Chester Bennington, lead singer of the band Lincoln Park had a evil father and uncle. He happened to be financing a film Chris was making to expose all the pedophilia that’s finally coming out but not fast enough. This is coming from someone who knew pretty much in grammar school I was going to be a rockstar. I could have been but I was so not a Christian until a year before all the doors we couldn’t open because e couldn’t even find them. That all changed when I became a Christian. And if not for me realizing what was truly happening, (Satan or a demon was waving a carrot in my face. Satan is very real and I won’t debate that. I played with many bands that got signed or with members in my own bands that have committed suicide and weren’t on drugs or alcoholic’s. And the list of people just kept getting longer. I played for a season with Tyler Bates. He’s scores more films than anything. But he was playing with Marilyn Manson until his label dropped him over all of the sexual assault allegations. Brian Warner is his real name and he’s quite intelligent. No much on talent. He was raised as a Christian but he definitely rebelled. I do hope he wakes up and I don’t see anyway Tyler could get where he is having experienced what I have in the industry. WATCH THIS VIDEO. Just find it on KZbin. His first name starts with an A. X-Factor winner who tells what really is happening and what the plans really are. It took me two days to watch it. It’s 5 plus hours long. But the evidence is damning and makes me feel better knowing I didn’t sign any deal. Well done work on the video and presentation. I love the music but the message is from the pit of hell. And what some people do to get there only to realize they are owned unless they accept Christ into their lives. If you’re sure of what you believe, you shouldn’t be afraid to watch maybe a 10 to 12 minute video. Also on KZbin. Check it out. I know these things are true. But you decide. Living Waters is the name of his KZbin channel. And he was a very wealthy New Zealander and living for the party when he was a young man. Ray Comfort isn’t the Savior. He’s just the one I think makes things understandable if you have the courage to listen to the end. Your eternity depends on this just like mine and his still does. He won’t ask you to join a church or anything like that. I wonder if you’re brave enough to check it out....I hope so. You do great work but it’s could be put to much better uses. The songs on the first album were determined by the heavy hand of producer Rodger Bain, which is why Priest always had a love/hate relationship with their debut, because it didn't really reflect their onstage sound.

Rob said it himself. You have to give credit to Sabbath for their input, but Priest INVENTED Metal in that they shed the blues base that Sabbath are known for. Rob Halford said himself Judas Priest invented Heavy Metal. You never can find anywhere that anyone in Black Sabbath makes that claim. Whoever said that Black Sabbath with their Heavy Psyche Rock were playing Metal were wrong. Over time Black Sabbath developed into a Heavy Metal band, but by that time Judas Priest and Rush were already playing Metal. Heavy Weird Scary Music existed since the Neolithic era , but nothing was Metal until Sad Wings of Destiny hit the shelves of Record Stores . If you are convinced that Black Sabbath were playing real Metal in 1970 then so were Led Zeppelin, UFO, Sir Lord Baltimore, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. Most of those 1970s bands actually had more elements of Metal in their sound than Black Sabbath had , first and foremost screaming Vocals and Agressive music, which is very scarce to find on the first 2 Black Sabbath albums. Black Sabbath just had songs that sounded like a bad LSD trip, not headbanging fury
