+Carlin Jones in reference to the past there is some major discussion in the trans community about whether or not to limit the usage of deadnames to refer to high-profile celebrities (like Cait) in their specific time periods (especially in reference to the Simpson trial, the 1976 Olympics, prior acting roles she was in) or to not use them at all some trans people, seeing the slippery slope of letting somebody use a deadname in specific cases and giving people the psychological okay to use deadnames in all cases (especially regarding openly trans people who became famous after their transition, i.e. Brianna Wu, Janet Mock, Laverne Cox), don't believe people should use deadnames regardless. the use of deadnames can be seen as a violation of autonomy - an act of psychological violence bordering on gaslighting in how they deny them their humanity and their decision-making, but openly deny that they're doing anything wrong. but others, knowing that simply asserting that a person's gender identity is final really hampers the whole idea of gender fluidity (which is tantamount to the acceptance of trans people) and how confusing it's going to get when more high-profile celebrities like Lana Wachowski, Cait Jenner, and Laura Jane Grace come out and complete transitioning, state that one should use deadnames in reference to historical events regarding high-profile celebrities ONLY. not Brianna Wu - her deadname is her private life. not Laverne Cox - her deadname is her private life. but yes for Cait Jenner - BUT not in reference to her as a person today; only in reference to her pre-transition achievements, pre-2015). Yes for Laura Jane Grace - but ONLY in reference to activities she did before Transgender Dysphoria Blues and her coming out. Yes for Lana Wachowski - but ONLY in reference to movies made before Speed Racer. and even then, if you're referring to a person today but mentioning their prior achievements, don't use deadnames. a smart reader will figure out the deadname. a smarter reader will not use the deadname.
