Görsel they accept that a certain amount of vibration in the cabin will be inevitable, and in fact will make the car feel more “hardcore” and “focussed” to the customer, as this is a common tactic used in race cars. Longevity of the design isnt necessarily the no. 1 concern in this case, as in a race car it is constantly being re-built/components replaced, and in the case of this hyper-car that will be driven barely a couple of thousand miles a year (and maintained to the highest standard), the chance of mechanical failure is relatively low. If this was your everyday Ford Focus or the like, the higher average mileage, harsher conditions (speedbumps, potholes etc) and more lax maintenance would result in higher chance of major mechanical failures due to high stresses/material fatigue. The other point to consider is the fact that (as mentioned in the video) the engine uses timing gears instead of a belt or chain system. This is because a belt or chain wouldn’t be able to rotate at such high speeds (11000 RPM crank, and 5500 RPM for the cam sprockets) unless they were very bulky and over engineered, adding unnecessary weight. The gears also add a lot of vibration and noise, which is a key reason we don’t see them in everyday engines. I think at some point in the video (correct me if i’m wrong), the engineer in the lovely flowery shirt said that the geartrain was at the back of the engine (i.e. furthest away from the cabin) so that the vibration would be harder to feel, and also slightly absorbed/damped by the crankshaft/flywheel’s motion. I think thats everything? Hope it answers your question 👍
@hamstirrer68826 жыл бұрын
Görsel me too, but its probably not too much for the million/billionaires who will most likely own this car...its a tactic used in motorsport to save weight, at the expense of everything else. If it would have any benefits in an everyday road car, it would trickle down, as a lot of new tech in consumer cars comes from motorsport (dual clutch transmissions, brake technology, engine design, theres loads of examples). Ultimately Aston Martin must have decided that the people who this car is aimed at will like the feeling of having a bare bones hardcore racecar for the road. Just my two pennies

Yep, _or_ a 3.3 litre naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine making 373 kW. Not bad at all! Of course, a hybrid system with hybrid forced induction (using stored/reclaimed energy for electric-powered intelligent boosting combined with conventional turbo/super-changing) and infinitely variable valve actuation, would provide a vastly superior setup. The days of the normally aspirated engine are almost over, as too are the days of non-hybrid performance vehicles.

I really hope that either this or Project 1 will gain such status ,but something tells me that F1 will remain the all time biggest automotive icon. @RealRaynedance6 жыл бұрын
We don't want this engine. We want its sound. About to get a little nerdy here, and I hope I'm not coming across rude. Assuming it all weighed the minimum, the entire powertrain of a modern F1 car, including the hybrid system, weighs at least 35kg less than this engine does MINUS its hybrid system. It also makes about the same power. That's a lot of weight when you're talking about something as light as an F1 car. Even the weight of the fuel makes a noticeable impact. You'd need to do SOMETHING to the engine to get enough power out of it to counter the weight, and it would end up even heavier because of it. I think the only F1 engines from the past that could come close to doing enough are the qualifying engines used in the 1980s. The old turbo 6s running stupid amounts of boost that couldn't be used for more than a few laps because they'd blow themselves up. And all of this is ignoring the sheer size of the engine. Modern F1 cars are built to hold a 1.6L engine, so you'd need to rework the body, further increasing the weight. So yeah. We really wouldn't want something this big and heavy in an F1 car. But it'd sure make a nice noise.

Any sort of mechanical work on this car will be a major task.

lol major is an understatement
@CockatooDude6 жыл бұрын
I know right, you'd basically have to pull the engine to do anything major to it, but because it's connected to the car, you'd have to take the entire car apart to pull the engine. Although the people who buy this thing won't really care how much the servicing costs.

I bet they have an equally amazing waiting room at the service centre while you wait for an oil and plugs change. Some say the coffee there is so good, it over shadows the car.

I still would take the engine from the Porsche 919 over this.

Trance 9 thank you Captain Obvious. I’m pretty sure 99.9% of us expect that on a multi million pound hypercar.

Weighs 440lbs. Just for comparison, a small block Chevrolet V8 weighs 575lbs. WOW!! THIS THING IS AN RPM MONSTER!!!!!
@jeffreyhavlik35626 жыл бұрын
Yes the old iron block, iron head small block from the 80's may have weighed that. However the current LT1 small block weighs 465 lbs

what kind of idiot would compare an engine made in 1955 to an engine made in 2018? no one uses the SBC boat anchors anymore unless its for period correct rebuilds. the LS series is far and away better. LS1 engine weighs 390lbs dry, around 430lbs fully dressed. LS7 weighs about 450lbs fully dressed. the cosworth engine is truly amazing regardless. what an achievement for them.
@jdrok50266 жыл бұрын
@@OxBlitzkriegxO the sbc isn't a boat anchor infact that platform can run circles na around this 6.5l v12 with only 6.2ls
@jdrok50266 жыл бұрын
@@OxBlitzkriegxO the ls series isn't far and away better God damn the. You can get a sbc that weights less than a ls makes more power then a ls and is quicker and stronger then the most expensive ls build around. As the quickest sbc is a nitro engine at 5.67 ets in the quarter and the ls barely traps 6.10s

The point was "why is this guy comparing a 2019 Cosworth engine to a 1955 chevy small block!!?"

This may well be the last best internal combustion engine. Peak engineering and likely the end of an era...
@LoanwordEggcorn6 жыл бұрын
Agree. Internal combustion is dead, and this is near peak engineering. A reliable 1000hp from 200 kg is remarkable. And normally aspirated is much better driving than boosted.
@bobbysmith97256 жыл бұрын
Well it might be peak of engineering, but it is ridiculous to say that internal combustion engines are dead -- and they won't be for a very, very long time.

It's surely not the end yet, since 3rd generation fuels and methane synthesis are on the rise.
@briannabernaola55976 жыл бұрын
you're underestimating how much cheaper would become to live with an Ev. Mantainance very rare and no fuels needed (electricity also has its cost but it will be so mich better than fuels, every kind of fuels). Let's the money do the talk, I'm curious too...
@swesleyc76 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking this same thing. Electric motors are the future. I'm excited for change, though. New e cars will be exciting as well... It'll become a hydrodynamics and software problem to solve instead of mechanical, mostly. But we have a long time before ICE goes away.

such a glorious sound :-D If you listen closely you can hear greeny people cry, because they are doomed to dislike it
