For the classical jazz theory folk, he is using a Dim Minor Major 6 scale just a Dim 6 Major scale with a minir third instead, in Ab

I always viewed the Ab minor 6th as the F half diminished (minor seventh flat5), in 1st inversion........ It seems to me to be the better chord to learn inversions from, since it is more commonly used.... but i could be wrong.

It’s just that 3 of the episodes revolve around the Ab melodic minor scale. For purposes of getting the concept and committing it to memory, it’s much easier to see this as the Ab minor 6 and Bb diminished 7 alternating up the Ab melodic scale. Bringing in the F half diminished perspective passes a theory test but what mental links get you playing and flowing on the spot in all 12 keys is the question?
