Dang this makes me miss my H&P family! JP still the excellent teacher he is! I was with H&P fam pre GMTC when I learned from purchasing all of JG CDs and DVDs with the Workbook back in 2006. I was a total beginner but I learned how to fully play from this program to where I was able to play for my church a few times when our musician wasn’t available. I was there when GMTC first was launched too and remembered when this changed the game! Only this I regret is not being able to learn how to play two hand voicings like JP so I was never able to play with a band cause I didn’t know how to play without the root in my left. But I will always forever be grateful for JG, JP, and H&P fam because they helped me play my dream instrument when I wasn’t able to find a 🎹 teacher to learn gospel. I love seeing how much the company has grown though 🤩👏🏾👏🏾!!

Barry taught the minor 6 perspective too he said in order to play the scale of chords you must convert it to a six chord then use diminished chords on non chord tones to creat movement.

I love these videos. The movements are immediately usable.🔥🔥I was familiar with the walk-up but that melodic scale was new to me. I've heard those sounds before but never knew that they were based on a scale. Awesome stuff 👏🏼 👌🏽

Does this transcribe to guitar. I've an interest in playing guitar for my church. I'm pretty experienced but haven't played a lot of P&W music. I familiar with my guitar chords and music structures but was wondering if what your playing can be transcribe to guitar. Great video.

In Traditional theory The Abm6 is actually an F half diminished 7th (Fø7) which is the ii chord in Eb minor so Fø7 Bb7 is ii V in Eb minor which this ii V can function in E major also to (like you said ) give you that sound in ‘Total Praise’ #2. What you’re calling the Bb diminished (B°7) in this case functions as an E diminished 7th (E°7) but to further explain I’ll my own tutorial... to explain better how diminished chord work b/c diminished chords function primarily by leading tones to resolve to the next chord... E°7 Fø7 it resolves by 1/2 steps... I called the guy that started hear and play to lend my services to consult you guys on the music theory aspect of things years ago but he turned me down and said y’all got it.... but clearly that’s not the case... nevertheless I’m in a much better position now to post my own tutorials and create a greater awareness for the music theory side of things... besides all of that there’s still some great content in this tutorial
@hearandplay2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Actually, if you want to follow traditional harmony (especially what is obtainable in the common practice period [1600 -1900]), the Abm6 chord is a non-tertian harmony and is contrary to the Fø7 chord (which is tertian). Note: This reply may be long but I encourage you to read through. Let’s compare both chords (in three critical ways): Abm6 vs Fø7 1. Root or generator. Both chords differ in root and whilst they may have the same notes but the former is an Ab chord and the latter is an F chord. This is not the same with symmetrical chords or chords of limited transposition like the augmented triad or diminished seventh chord where you get exactly the same result with the inversion of a chord: C aug = E aug = Ab aug. Considering that all the chords are augmented, we can pretend to ignore that we don’t know that the 5th of E aug is B# and you can neither find that in the C aug nor in the Ab aug. Yes! We can let that slide because the consequent harmony is augmented. But in a situation where you have a chord evolve from diminished to minor is NOT permissible. 2. Structure or Quality. You can’t turn a blind eye to the fact that the Abm6 chord is a minor chord whilst the Fø7 is a diminished chord. At least the fact that if both chords are miniaturized, you get the Ab minor triad for the former and the diminished triad for the latter. The structure and function of a chord is enshrined in its purest form - the triadic form. At that triadic state, the Abm6 as an Ab major triad, will never belong to the same family as the Fø7 as an F diminished triad. 3. Function or Role. There are two kinds of Fø7 in music. 😊 The Fø7 in Gb major (that “resolves” up a half-step to Gb [playing a leading note function aka “incomplete or implied passing chord”]) and the Fø7 in the Eb minor (that “progresses” up a fourth or down a fifth to Bb). Now, your Fø7 that you took from Eb minor is a supertonic chord and it progresses to the Bb7 as a cyclical possibility. However, this is different from how the Abm6 chord functions “traditionally.” The Abm6 is designed to resolve down a fourth or up a fifth (it’s a subdominant chord). Next, I saw how you smartly tried to use the limited transposition of the diminished chords that belong to the Bb matrix (Bbdim7, C#dim7, Edim7, and Gdim7), to turn the Bbdim7 into an Edim7 chord so it would play a leading note role to the Fø7. I would have appreciated that if you hadn’t talked about resolution. Resolution is the movement of an unstable (dissonant chord) to a stable chord. An Edim7 to Fø7 movement is NEVER a resolution. Edim7 may go to F minor and Eø7 may go to F major (or an unresolving dominant chord). But to a diminished??? That’s totally against common practice and “traditional theory” of European art music. Additional Note: The chords JP did in this video are basically taken off the Ab melodic minor scale. Now, in line with the tonal and rhythmic principles of bebop music, an additional tone is added (chromatic) to complement an existent sixth chord (NOT the classical six-three) with a diminished seventh chord. This produces the sixth-diminished scale. So, if you fit the Abm6 chord (sixth) and the Bbdim7 (diminished) into the same octave, you have: “Ab” Bb “Cb” Db “Eb” E “F” G Ab (a sixth-diminished scale) The Abm6 is the sixth component and the Bbdim7 is the diminished component. The Abm6 chord would eventually connect us back to Eb major and if you understand your lydian-augmented scale (one of the synthetic scales of the melodic minor), you can see that the Eb lydian-augmented scale is the fourth mode of the Ab melodic minor scale. We put an “E” in the Ab melodic minor scale to get the Bb diminished. My name is Onyemachi Chuku and I’m the in-house musicologist of HearandPlay Music group and we’re sorry that there wasn’t an opening for you in the past. We’ll definitely reach out to you in the not-too-distant future cos we’re working on something that may get you involved. But that’s if you’re still open to collaboration.

Every inversion of the diminished chord is also the root position of the lowest note
