Spearfishing off Cavo Greco,Cyprus can hear the Turkish ship "Barbaros" carrying out seismic surveys (illegally breaching the territorial waters of Cyprus). You can hear the first sound waves fired at 0:21 and subsequently every 10 seconds after that.
Definition of seismic surveying from wikipedia:
"Traditional marine seismic surveys are conducted using specially-equipped vessels that tow one or more cables containing a series of hydrophones at constant intervals....The seismic source, usually an airgun but other sources are available, is also deployed underneath the surface of the water and is located between the vessel and the first receiver. 2 sources are often used in order to achieve a fast rate of shooting....and the source is typically fired every 15 or 20 seconds.

Unlike air which is squishy and slippy (molecularly speaking), as water is much less compressible (to the point its just easier to say its incompressible) you are effectively mechanically coupled to the thing making noise. The fun bit is thermoclines where you are in essence under a sound shadow from boats above or below the layer. Also there are bands of water at a certain salinity and temperature that act as sound tunnels, the sound will bounce off the top and bottom transition layers but travel very far laterally.

"The biggest Seismic blasting vessel in the world coming in at a whopping 125 meters, travels around the ocean shooting an extremely loud air gun, 100,000 times louder than a jet engine into the sea every 10 seconds. They do this in search for oil and gases."
@commanderrockwell1123
@commanderrockwell1123 Жыл бұрын
@@bro9479You should do your own. He’s right. You’d be surprised how loud things can get down there due to water’s greatly increased compression wave conductivity. There’s very little energy loss in compression waves underwater due to the fact that water is non-compressible.
@commanderrockwell1123
@commanderrockwell1123 Жыл бұрын
@@bro9479 Then you understand that the decibel scale is logarithmic, with an increase in 10 decibels resulting in an increase in the value of a sound’s energy by a multiplier of 10. Therefore, 140db + 10db would be ten times as loud as 140db. Take this to 190db, and you get a value which comes out to, yes, 100,000 x the energy of a jet engine’s sound. It is worth noting that an increase of 10 decibels typically results in an multiplier of 2 times the perceived volume, but a multiplier of 10 x the energy of the sound itself. Hope this clears some things up for you. Sounds absurd, I’m sure, but feel free to verify my information yourself. I did so before posting this. Final note, I specify 190 decibels because that is the value I got when trying to find recorded decibel values for seismic airguns, however I also saw that some were deliberately brought up to 200 decibels for an experiment, which amounts to 1,000,000x the energy of a jet engine sound.
@Porsche4life

@@bro9479yikes your a pilot and diver? You should stop both. You realize even sonar can melt your body internally and kill you instantly with one ping when close up. Jet engines aren’t remotely loud compared to seismic blasting. Even the b-1 bomber or aircraft without his boots come close. Those you can withstand without headphones. Shockwaves from Seismic blasting can kill a human and marine life in a second. So he’s right. Look it up and learn some interesting facts.

There’ll be a ship with a big streamer somewhere that’s causing it. Blurb says this is southern Cyprus and since the mid-00’s they’ve been talking about exploring gas fields around there & eastern Med, already carving it into blocs, guess this is hearing some of exploratory work.

Yes this sounds very much like seismic source shooting, but for the people commenting, this is similar to lightning in the air, yes this is loud, but i have never seen any fish dead floatting at the surface after a shot, there are also, people onboard who's task is to check for visible wild life activity nearby ( dolphins, turtles, whales,etc...). By day, this remains to be done visually, by night they have sensors at sea to record for "clicks" from dolphins and whales, if detected, shooting is aborted til they get far enough from the source, these people are known as "mammal watchers", seismic companies are well aware of noise disturbances, and spend thousands of $$$ trying to minimize the environmental impact. Before a survey goes, survey locations have already been assessed for potential wild life activities, fishing activities, etc..., and only the countries deliver permits to perform seismic surveys if they choose to, with tons of rules to follow.
