Barracuda is a predator.;. when Heart first hit, the fact that Ann sang and her sister Nancy played guitar was something that was unusual. Sleazy record promoters thought it would be a good idea to put out rumors that the two women were lovers, which pissed the sisters off. So Ann wrote barracuda about it.

I knew someone would explain it correctly to BP. And you thought of a bear? Not a fish or even a Plymouth muscle car. Aww, that's an "L" brother. Just messing with you. A barracuda is a predatory saltwater fish that stalks rather than hunts. They're incredibly fast, powerful, and nasty fighters. Ann and Nancy wrote this song about one of their promoters that wanted to portray them as incestuous polyamorous lesbians, to basically refer to the promoter as a nasty, slimy, stalking predator.

Yes, but this is the studio version over the performance. If it was live? I rather if they left it live? This is the 70s so not all hit songs got a video yet. I doubt this was released as a official video in-the-day? Only because it is not a good lip-synth.

Ann Wilson (vocals) of Heart wrote 'Barracuda' in the 70's after she met a record executive at a party and he insinuated that her sister (Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson) was her lesbian lover... She was furious and wrote the lyrics calling that executive a flesh-eating, ugly-as-hell fish...😂 Heart was the first heavy rock band to feature a female vocalist... Formed in Seattle in the late 60's by Roger Fisher (lead guitar), the band changed their name to Heart in the early 70's after Ann Wilson (vocals) joined... Ann soon became romantically involved w/ Michael Fisher (Roger Fisher's brother) and moved to Canada where he was dodging the Vietnam draft at the time... Heart soon moved to Canada with her and was joined by Ann's younger sister Nancy Wilson (guitar/ backing vocals) by 1974 (Nancy became romantically involved w/ guitarist Roger Fisher)... A Canadian label Mushroom Records signed Heart and released their debut album in 1975 - 'Dreamboat Annie'... It was a surprising hit w/ songs like 'Magic man' ... 'Crazy on you'... 🔥🤘 However, their record label attempted a disastrous publicity story in the tabloids about Ann and Nancy being lesbian lovers, which infuriated Heart and they left to sign w/ CBS Records in 1977 and released the album 'Little Queen'... which went platinum w/ the single 'Barracuda'. Heart became a major rock band in the 70's as their next album 'Dog & butterfly' (1978) sold platinum, but Nancy Wilson and Roger Fisher's breakup soon led to Roger Fisher being fired after he took the split badly (However, he admitted that he was relieved and thankful to be out of the band) and Ann Wilson split up w/ Michael Fisher as well... Heart saw their popularity and record sales drop by 1983 and was out of a record contract. Soon, Capitol Records offered Heart a new contract... but the catch was that the band had to get a makeover in 1985 and work w/ outside songwriters to deliver hit singles... Another issue was that singer Ann Wilson had gained weight in the early 80's and the music industry had to conceal her body frame in music videos, which would feature the petite Nancy Wilson as the sex symbol. Heart released their self-titled album in '85 and it was a huge hit in the MTV era and sold 5x platinum w/ the hits - 'What about love' ... 'These dreams'... 🔥🤘 Their next album 'Bad Animals' (1987) sold 3x platinum w/ the singles - 'Alone' ... 'Who will you run to'. 'Brigade' (1990) also sold platinum on the single 'All I wanna do is make love to you'... but Heart was determined in the 90's to go back to their roots and write their own hits w/ the album 'Desire walks on' (1993). However, the 90's grunge rock era decimated their popularity by 1995 and Heart decided to take a break. Ann & Nancy Wilson reunited in 2002 to tour as Heart and released the live album 'Alive in Seattle' in 2003 w/ a new line-up... and released a comeback album "Jupiter's darling" (2004) ... The sisters continued to record & tour as Heart, until an incident in 2016 involving Ann's husband and Nancy's son caused a rift and disbanded Heart for a few years... They have only recently started to work together again as Heart.

The band Heart has re-invented themselves a couple of different times while keeping up with the times going from the hard rockin' 70's to the hair bands of the 80's, but this is at their iconic best. The sisters Ann, lead singer, and Nancy on guitar, are just amazing. The only problem is that the rest of the band were also outstanding in their own right and would be over-shadowed. By the mid-80's most had left the band. The other songs you really need to check out is "Dream Boat Annie", "Crazy on You", and "I Only Want to Make Love to You".

A barracuda is an aggressive saltwater ambush predator fish. The story behind the song is pretty wild really. Heart was founded by sister's Ann and Nancy Wilson. Ann is considered one of the best rock vocalists and Nancy is generally in the discussion of to guitarists. They were initially signed to a small record label called Mushroom Records. Mushroom put it their debut album and, as a marketing stunt, created rumors, posters, and other marketing material suggesting that the sister's were actually secretly lovers. This upset the band greatly and they had a messy departure from Mushroom Records over it. The result was a better deal at a bigger label and their signature hit, Barracuda. The song itself is just a bunch of metaphors. The Mushroom Record folks are the barracuda (I believe there was one executive in particular that drew Ann's ire, but I don't know the name). Nancy is "the porpoise" (another name for a dolphin). The lyrics allude to the executives putting on smiling happy faces to cover their true behind the scenes motives. Heart is truly an iconic band and you should definitely check out more of the sister's work. They also have an acoustic group called The Lovemongers.

Good eye Pegasus! This footage is from a live concert, however the audio is in fact the recorded studio version, overdubbed. But you can see how close and tight the band is, aside from Ann's vocals not matching. She always does it slightly different as a real singer will do with a song they actually wrote. During live concerts the emotion driving the song will be different each night they perform. Legends!❤

This was from a time when musicians made music, instead of producers making "stars" like today. Ann Wilson is an amazing singer to this day and she is in her 60's. The sisters were greatness, oddly enough, there is an up and coming young sister band from Mexico called The Warning whose main vocalist/guitarist has many of the vocal qualities Ann has. Her name is Dany Villarreal, and at 23 she is already a great singer, you might want to check them out.

A barracuda is a vicious ambush predator fish, with teeth like piranhas. It's slang for a greedy, vicious and treacherous person. The "porpoise" in the song ("the porpoise and me") is her sister Nancy (the guitarist in the band), expanding on the oceanic metaphor. Porpoises are generally seen as gentle, loving creatures. The song was an "F-you" song to their (former) music label. Behind their back, their label began to spread a rumor that the sisters were secretly incestuous lovers, to try to generate buzz, and when they found out they were like "aw hell naw!", and wrote this song, basically calling them out for their amoral predatory behavior ("no right, no wrong, selling a song") and telling them to go burn in hell ("You're gonna burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick").

This is live video synched to the studio recording. That's what the 'synch issues' are.

No auto tune back in the day, she just had a sublime voice. Her cover of stairway to heaven I prefer over the oeiginal

This was a song about her anger at ther record company for trying to portray her and her sister (who sings backup and plays guitar as secret lovers to gin up interest and sell records. The baracuda in the song is the record company.

It was very common at the time to film a live performance and then match that with the studio recording for the music video.

This is the studio recording played over their performance at the Midnight Special.

The song was written about the industry in general they had a promoter who thought their music required some extra hook to sell, Ann and Nancy Wilson were Partiers at the time and some of their sexual exploits were well known that also included (reportedly) them sharing people, typical rock stars in the 70s and 80s in other words. their promoter thought it would be a good idea to play upon a rumor and portray them as incestuous lesbians, so the song was written in a rage against that person. There are numerous accounts of it online, better more in depth. the term barracuda makes the promoter some fast moving, ugly fish with a lot of teeth

Ann Wilson is one of the best rock vocalists EVER, you got her and Amy Lee the Same week, good job,on Evanescence, you should do "Bring me to Life" - Ann is so great you cant go wrong w Heart. Try also Crazy on You, Magic Man, and Alone. Their Version of Rock and Roll from their 1980 live album is great too. Kennedy Center Honors is magical. This song was about sleazy promoters saying the Wilson Sisters were lesbian lovers to generate Buzz/ink.

IMO, The Queen of Rock! She's still going strong in her early 70s. Disturbed just dropped a video duet with her and David Draiman that is awesome! Her voice aged like velvet ... ❤

Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. Her range and musicianship are amazing. I've heard her sing acapella - she sounds exactly like this. They didn't put anything on her voice. Another bit of trivia... Ann had a pretty serious stuttering problem when she was a kid, but she realized that she didn't stutter when she sang. Clearly, she outgrew it. And, because Ann wasn't ever a really skinny girl... they used to call Nancy 'The Porpoise,' and they called Ann 'The Whale.' Hence, 'you know... the Porpoise and me...'

None of the previous comments even mentioned that Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart) are the daughters of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.

Trying to catch up on the CLASSIC ROCK, they are sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson. Supposedly when they were 12-13? Not sure they both got MONONUCLEOSIS (kissing disease), and lasted anywhere between 4-6 weeks, very contagious, their mom had to keep them home from school, and she went and bought a guitar 🎸 and said do something useful while your sick. And they did!!! Pretty sure that’s what happened. By the way MAGIC MAN, Dreamboat Annie all their songs are good and saw them live great show. Had to save my money buy my ticket, it was worth it!!!!

The Wilson sisters come from a time when you had to have talent to make it in the music industry. No autotune! IMHO one of the best ever!

She and her sister did the tribute to Led Zeppelin at The Kennedy Arts Center Awards. They pay tribute to different artists and she sang their STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN...much olderthen.

Ann and Nancy Wilson were right in the middle of the music explosion of the 1970s. They took a back seat to nobody and had the respect of everybody. To this day the concert I saw of theirs in Sacramento is still in my top 3 list. Ann could lift the roof off of any building she sang. When you saw Heart you'd better be ready to R O C K. They could bring it ! ! !

Ann Wilson revealed in interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards Mushroom Records, who as a publicity stunt released a made-up story of an incestuous affair involving Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson. The song particularly focuses on Ann's rage towards a male radio promoter who came up to her after a concert asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher. After he revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy, Ann became outraged, went back to her hotel room, and wrote the original lyrics of the song.
