Heart Break High's Fandom Has A Shipping Problem + Rant

Firstly, I know I am late. The show came out months ago, near the start of the year and now it’s the end of the year. Secondly, I know I’m fixating on a fictional ship and yapping about what other people ship. With all this in mind, I still wanted to make this video. I hate the ship with a burning passion. Spider is so gross and Amerie is literally an angel.

Great video! It's cool to see this type of media online (sappy teen dramas) receive the same level of analysis and audience accountability as bigger shows/movies. Along with the concept of pretty privilege being really prominent with Spider's character, I think what's also important is recognizing the lens of white-centric beauty standards that people are looking at him through, which the romance genre has a huge history of wrongly accentuating in the first place. I think that also has to do with why he, despite his shitty behavior, is implored to have this "arc of growth" or change while fans are quick to throw someone like Malakai aside and not want to offer him that same grace. Which boggles me even more considering how like you mentioned, the show goes great lengths to show the different treatment and prejudice non-white Australians experience!!

Oh my gosh YES! I'm kicking myself for not even considering the racial aspect of this whole situation. You put it quite perfectly. This certainly can be viewed from the white-centric beauty standards and in fact, I'm sure it has a lot to do with Spider's fans and how (SOME) are willing to deem Malakai as worse!

@@crespo_ There’s a lot to dive into when looking at the racial aspect definitely. Especially considering the center of it all is a non-white young woman whose automatically assumed to have the patience for dealing with the naïveté and bias of a white guy when there’s no real justification for expecting that. And if Spider was BIPOC with the same attitude, would he have the same loyal fanbase? Methinks not. Food for thought for sure!

[spoilers for season 2] really interesting video. as someone who just binged the entire 2 seasons i never shipped them together but i did look forward to spider's scenes but i put that down purely to bryn chapman parish rather than the character of spider. as someone who thinks he is attractive, i can also recognise that he is a shit and his actions/mentality can't be justified by amerie telling him to get lost (which was a bit mean especially cos he was in a vulnerable situation)...but i still think you can enjoy an actors performance of a charcter without liking the attitude or actions of said character even if it reflects real world issues. As long as there is an awareness of that then i think its ok. those comments were unhinged lol and yeah shipping him with amerie is a bit weird but makes sense by internet standards haha,, i just hope those people making fan edits have awareness that dating someone like that would be toxic and a miserable fucking time even if he is hot. his character is basically a demonstration of a very insecure person that projects onto others to the highest degree plus the thing with his mum in s2 provides further reasoning. but again, it doesn't justify how cruel he can be, it does explain it tho. I'm glad he has got some redemption and he started to change for himself, not anyone else... although how they explored that was weak IMO, like just cos the PE teacher got really culty and gross towards the end and then he got punched, like it LITERALLY had to hit him in the face to be like 'oh yeah maybe this isn't the best after all' like come on, spider deserved better:( but i guess they have so many characters, they can't go too too in depth with him. but yeah!! lets cheer on spider and missy instead cos they are so freaking cute and she is the positive influence he needed to become a better person. and i like how missy called him out saying you can't change cos of me, you gotta do it for you, essentially saying 'i ain't gonna fix u, u gotta do that yourself. but i'll be there for you!!' so cute 😍 anyways sorry for long comment i was riding a high after finishing these 2 series, they nailed the gen z stuff and representation DAMN this show is good. renew for SEASON 3 pls netflix!!

Doesn't spider/missy do exactly the second problem here--the I can fix you trope? Honestly he should've just calmed down on his own, interacted with Amerie a few times (not romantically, but perhaps apologize after he's over her and can deal with how he lashed out last season), and then he'd be in a great place to start something new with someone like missy the next season. Plunging right into this new romance that this time worked out for him, I felt like it played into the "Amerie was mean and couldn't fix him, but Missy was nice and did". Like no, he could've dealt with his issues without romance, his friends could've given him crap, he could've grown up, etc. Yeah she said "i won't fix you" etc. but that's just lip service at that point. She did basically fix him the entire show, she reciprocated his feelings, then learned about his mom, then made him feel better, etc.
