Growing up in the 70’s into the 80’s we were lucky with music. I could name several great rock bands but we all know who they are. Heart was so good. The voice of Ann Wilson is seductive and strong. We lived thru the golden age of music. There will never be another era that comes close.

Here it is 2023 and I’m revisiting songs from back in the day. I’m a old school Hard Rock/Metal guy but I have a,ways loved Heart. Great band the voice of Ann Wilson is amazing. Heart was so much better than most soft rock bands back in the great 1980’s. This song wasn’t a huge hit but my fav off of Passionworks.

Out of all places, I saw Heart perform this song (and several others) at "Six Flags over Texas" back in summer of 1988 or 9. A mere $5 cover charge to see them at the small amphitheater there. A Fan jumped on stage and grabbed/hugged Nancy from behind during their performance. She simply walked backwards, backing them both into the waiting security guys... The video here is a reference performance though, thanks for sharing.

Just over a year after this, Heart would have even bigger success with the 'Heart' album. Bigger Hair, Bigger Singles, Bigger Videos. I wish I could have seen what it was like for a Heart fan during that period. I was 7, 8 years old at the time. With fashion, styles & ect. I can't think of any artists over the last 15, 20 years that went from a certain style and image to another within a years time like it was for the musical artists in the 80's.

They went from great early in their career and started playing these very mediocre songs. Too bad as this was a great song. Then, they got a great lineup, much better songs, and frankly sexed up their image until Ann got fat. That's not a putdown, just a fact. I still say she is one of the most underrated singers in history.

I was in high school in the early mid eighties. A lot of 70's bands were transitioning as music, and even how you looked changed. The 70's looked so outdated when you were standing in 1984. Check out Yes, Journey, even Neil Young and Lou Reed looked somewhat contemporary. As far as Heart in the mid 80's went, kind of the same band but I didn't associate them with the 70's version.
@fluorcyl61125 жыл бұрын
I can tell you what it was like... I was in high school back then and it was beyond awesome! Everybody loved them. They were all over the radio and totally in fashion, and they were all over MTV. And back then, MTV actually played videos! That's probably a surprise to a lot of the younger people. Yeah, there was a time when MTV just played videos all day and all night. It was like listening to the radio, only with video to accompany it. Now all they do is play stupid TV shows which hardly anybody watches.
@gregfox15595 жыл бұрын
I was about 20, 21 years old and it was an interesting time for Heart. Music was swiftly changing to more MTV/New Music/ British bands like Duran Duran, Culture Club, etc, (which I also loved, btw). I was worried for Heart, as they'd fallen somewhat from a big rock band with hit songs and albums to somewhat under the radar. It seemed like they were being swept aside as yesterday's news. When the album Passion Works, (from which the song is from), came out in Fall of 1983, I was hopeful as it sounded great, and the album cover showed off the band in sort of modern-style, (for the time). But when I say it was flatly ignored, I mean it. Never heard a song on the radio, never saw any videos on MTV for this, (and believe me, I watched A LOT of MTV). The previous album was not exactly a big hit either, (although City's Burning got a slight amount of radio play... and I saw them in concert for that tour, in 1982, and they were stunningly good, with new band members & all). But now, in 1983-84, they were really being ignored. So when the next album, the self-titled "Heart" album came out, Spring 1985, again... I had high hopes, but after seeing how they'd been ignored, it was questionable how much, if any, success they would have. The first BIG good sign was that they had a shiny new video for "What About Love" suddenly in regular rotation on MTV, (a gamechanger... resurrected their career). I cannot overestimate how important it was at that time for a band to have regular exposure on MTV. This was before the internet, and without all the competing distractions of today. They were really like a new band, for new fans, and also bringing along their old fans who were excited to see the band revved up and modernized. A killer combination, (this same formula also happened with a number of other artists at that time, who were big in the 70s and had fallen and now suddenly were resurrected in a shiny new MTV glow, like Starship and Tina Turner and some others). And most impressively, Heart followed up "What About Love" with some more great singles with excellent, state-of-the-art videos, for "Never", and "These Dreams" and "Nothing at All". 1985/86, they were on top of the world, and I would say most of their fans LOVED it. (The following album, "Bad Animals", was also a big hit, but that's where I think more of the old fans fell away. Something seemed a bit TOO pop-oriented, formulaic, and "processed" on that record. It just didn't seem to have enough... "heart". But that's another story...).
