To summarize Kripp's complaint, the main problem in this game is that the better player doesn't always come out on top in a match. This would be fine if it happened 1 game out of 20, but that is not the case in Hearthstone. Lifecoach says as much; if you play well, you can win 60-65% of the time, but you can play like crap and still win 50% of the time. I believe the cause of this is not randomness, but rather card design. In matches where Imp Gang Boss is played on 3 or Mysterious Challenger is played on 6, one of the players in that match has to think harder than the other, and it is always the one playing against these cards. There is almost no thought involved for the one playing a 4 mana 3/5 divine shield taunt; whereas the opponent is the one who has to scratch his head thinking about how best to answer that card(should he have no clean solution). What I'm saying is that players are playing against the developers' card design rather than against the players themselves. This leads to a situation where the power of the card's effect predominates over the actual skill level of the player. This allows players with less experience and knowledge to allow the value/power of their cards to "carry" them against more advanced players. Consider the classic "topdeck flamestrike" against Kripp. It doesn't matter if the topdecker was a legend player, or if he was a beginner. The fact is that the strength of that effect was what decided matches like that, and not the skill of the player. Decks like Patron Warrior are different, as the individual cards have powerful effects, but they also demand proportionately high skill levels from their players. In this sense, the power of the cards does not overshadow the patron player's skill, so players actually get to play against the person behind the cards. If all else is equal, this match will reflect the player's skill, and accordingly lets the better player win. And what of randomness? Randomness is a big compounding factor of the above effect. Say, if Babbling Book gives exactly Mirror Entity in a spot where the opponent cannot play anything other than a huge threat, then evidently the opponent is forced into a difficult situation that did not arise in any way from the strategy of the other player. Randomness gives more opportunities for these powerful effects to supersede the skill level of the players by generating cards that should not have existed, in the precise moments that these effects are needed. I can understand why the designers use so much randomness; it is the simplest way to get otherwise obsolete cards to see play, to create variety in matches, and it is simple to understand. It is also a lazy way to achieve these goals, as it worsens the imbalance between skill and match outcomes and leads to a situation where players may as well toss coins and call that a strategy game. A separate argument, pointed out by Kripp in his videos, is that randomness eliminates any notion of counterplay. It is outright impossible to guess and play around every single card in the game in every single situation, with the failure to do so allowing weaker players to get away with wins they should not have. This exemplifies exactly what I mean by the disparity between the skill of the player and the effect of the card. It did not take skill on the part of the player to get the better of the opponent - it was up to a dice roll. And while chance is inherent to card games, there was no need for the developers to make randomness such a major deciding factor in its games. It is immensely frustrating to constantly lose games to people out of sheer dumb luck, especially when you've been outmaneuvering and outplaying them the entire game. To summarize, this problem of playing against card design rather than against your opponent(because of the sheer power of that design) is a problem that has existed in Hearthstone for some time now(see Rag, Boom, Tirion), but is arguably getting worse with time due to increasing randomness(including discover), effectively snuffing out the role of the player in that game. TL;DR Randomness is a major factor but not the root cause of frustration in Hearthstone. It is a compounding factor of poor card design, which is the real culprit.

I have question. I may understand it due to some constructed format, but TRACKING in arena ? Why ? I mean - I understand it give you a chosen one card from your deck, but most of players forget, or even not noties that you lost two other cards(technikly they discarded,but it have no sinergies with warlock cards-s.ware golem, ects). So the question is - If arena is about some random and less constracted decks, where you actually not know what to expect, and should be prepared for any kind of crap including fight till the fatigue , with no difference what class u play for, so is there so much reason to just throw away 2 random (and may be ,pobably, very good) cards?
@chaosmastermind7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's why I don't use that card. You're basically milling yourself twice, spending mana, and not even gaining card advantage since you spent a card to do the effect.
@solarc70667 жыл бұрын
So I went through the video and on turn 3 he had these cards left to right: Worgen infiltrator 1st card Injured blade 2nd Fire Plume Pheonix 3rd Primordial Glyph 4th Flame Elemental 5th Nesting Roc 6th You can't even say he wanted to keep the flame elemental for synergy because he had a worgen. He had 3 plays which are straight better and two alternative plays which might be okay and he picked the clear worst one. Also on top of that on turn 7 he topdecked polymorph. Absolutely disgusting game.

Question, was it a misplay for Kripp to attack the 4/7 minion instead of going face at that point? The thing I've seen with mage is that it tends to come from behind to win. If Kripp would have went face instead, the mage would have only had a few turns to try to get back into the game as Kripp could have set up to just ping the mage to death. Looked to me like that 7 damage to the mage instead would have won Kripp the game as Kripp could have just pinged over and over each turn. Maybe I'm wrong though.
@izicial74697 жыл бұрын
That might be true but Kripp would have been horribly punished if the mage has something like Fireball or Polymorph.

Izicial Seems like he got punished by polymorph hitting the highmane instead. With him not hitting face, it gave the mage nearly 4 free turns.

that wasn't even a misplay, the only thing that was "misplayed" about it was that he had meteor and even then the meteor play is the shittier play. The only shit play the guy made was the injured blademaster and even then it wasn't complete shit because the other plays would have put him behind on board (even with a one drop in hand,) and for that one huge misplay Kripp pretty much made an entire video out of pure sodium.
