Tim Neve the big problem with trump is as most other streamers look at the cards individually trump tries to think up how the meta as a whole will change and predict how well the cards will do based off of that. do I think he should look at the cards as their own more? yes but at the same time I like hearing how he thinks up decks and how they will work before the expansion comes out

His reviews tend to be quite good, taking off for some meta offshots (Priest sees no play in Un'goro, or that the Goons would be very powerfull) but all in all he can make great calls (Patches and the whole crew were guessed by him for example)

The reason dinomancer is bad is because the lack of consistency with the discard mechanic, and if the mechanic that a card is based around is bad then the card itself is also inherently bad. It's like saying primalfin champion wouldn't be a bad card if quest paladin was good. True... but if a card is made redundant because it's sole purpose was to support a deck that turned out bad then it is also going to be worthless

I remember day 1 of Un'Goro so much more than I remember day 1 of any expansion. Hell, I remember HOUR 1 of Un'goro so much more than I remember any other expansion. It started with so many hopeful people trying to play a long game meta. Then, a few loose cannon Quest Rogues started showing up and completely assblasting every other deck into oblivion. Very quickly, everyone realized how completely overpowered it was and started doing the same. By the end of that first day, there was only Quest Rogue.

that's not true... in the gadgetzan meta before un'goro dragon priest was definitely a thing. The issue was most of the dragon priest cards were rotating out so everyone thought that priest wasn't going to be viable because they couldn't think of a decent priest deck to play. People also didn't expect stonehill defender to be good which slowed down the meta helping out priest.

I love what Day9 says at the end, super true. But I also think the reason people love to hate on (for example) Trumps predictions isn't because he can be super wrong, he's clearly not alone in that, these predictions are nearly impossible to make accurately after all. I think it's because of the way he phrases most of his predictions. "This is horrible." "This won't see play" and my favorite "I couldn't construct a deck that works with this." It sounds like he's somehow done hundreds of test games with them, which is of course not the case (or even possible) at that point. The only thing he could have conceivably done (that I can think of) would be theorycrafting a deck and pitting it against another theorycrafted deck of his and then decide who would win by gut feeling. I always want to ask how anyone could possibly definitively state there will not be a functioning deck with - for example in this video - Living Mana. How would you know? The card is not out yet, there is no way to see it perform, all you can take are educated guesses. If you were doing Arena-only predictions this might be viable, you have to take a card at face value in Arena, you can't assume you will have synergies in most cases. But constructed is a whole different question altogether. Making these kind of absolute statements about cards just comes of as super arrogant, and Trump is among the worst offenders in that category. If we go back to Day9's statement, this way of making super decisive predictions is taking that "emotional first look" aspect that people love about predictions and dressing it up like a precise science, where the Predictor turns from a person reacting to something to a self-declared expert. And that just feels waaaay to serious and arrogant for a card game like Hearthstone.

I personally agree with Trumps method, anyone can look at a card and say whether it's objectively a good card or not. The real challenge is predicting how much it will be used in the meta. Take Frost Lich Jaina for example. Anyone can look at that card and say it's amazing, It takes a lot of insight about the game though to predict it wouldn't work out in the meta.

Rogue Quest: turn 1 mana cards into tier 1 rating

Reminder to those watching in the Boomsday era: some of these are not neccessarily wrong. The meta back then was different; with a faster game, a more oppressive deck style. Stonehill was a 1/4 with value against oppressiveness, being only a stall. Lyra is not really amazing, because of the variance of Priest spells back then. But the value was good. The disco stuff is odd, though. Sherazin was very easy to underestimate because of its stats but the perma-presence is good. Lasher has some justification in the sort that the spell damage was not foreseen. Kibler rating Primordial Drake bad was quite something, though. The card is good enough to clear along with his opinion of Disco. He does see potential in it but eventually came around to giving up due to Disco's randomness. Trump severely underestimated Vilespine but I can see him thinking the destroy one was inefficient. Humongous Razorleaf is still not exceptional, but with the amount of tech you can do to it today, it can work. The Marsh Queen was a good card, although it released at a time where the quest requirements were too slow and the reward was not exactly fascinating. Today, with Rush, Zola, and Keleseth it has become a viable quest. Still not exceptional though. Barnabus even today may not work due to the amount of 5up attack you need. But it can certainly work, with ramp and everything. Also still not fantastic. To be fair as well, credit to Day9, predictions are fun to do. They are also meant to be wrong because that's what card gamers do, prove predictions wrong. Let's all just be merry and have fun.

The only problem I have with Trump's predictions is they come with this sense if arrogance. I feel like he builds this image of being a very calm, rational thinker who analyzes every situation and thus usually comes to the right solution, but then he lets his bias cloud his judgment. "Last expansion, Priest was bad, so I'm going to rate every Priest card as unplayable because why would you even want to play a Bad Class?" It's like Blizzard sets out this little trail of discovery to follow ("Ooh, Priest Elemental. Ohh, Shadow Visions! Whoa, Lyra!! Holy shit, look at what happens when you assemble all of these pieces!") and Trump just sees the first step and goes "I refuse to follow this because I'm too smart to be tricked".

Not a lot of people tend to think outside of this mindset, and as both of those decks ended up not being the best it was fair of him to rate it one star.

By this point IMO I'm pretty sure he's just playing a character and generating views. The meta is hard to predict, but he's been getting it so wrong every expansion; the reverse of his "predictions" are so much more accurate that it can't be all real.

His viewership is gradually realizing this as well about Trump. He used to average 20k viewers back in the day per stream, but now he struggles to get past 8k. Disguised Toast is beating him in terms of audience size and that guy is more about memes than serious Hearthstone. Trump is a great teacher for beginners of the game, I feel, but once you get past that level you realize there's really nothing else you can get out of the guy.

problem with their predictions is that firstly, RNG cards like lyra cannot be predicted until actual testing Secondly, there's a lot of bias when they predict based on the current meta or the worse class in the current meta. Predictions should be made after analysing what it could do based on the cards in standard rotation and its weaknesses and not just "it's too slow", first of all the meta being slow now does not equates to the meta in the future being slow too. Lastly, while it is true that there are people who watches predictions because it's fun, many of them are also watching because they do not want to spend dust on the wrong cards and would love to see a pro's analysis on the cards because crafting and not have to wait a few months for the meta to settle.

I think streamers sometimes judge the cards too separately. Ignoring the posible synergies is the biggest mistake when judging the cards. Yeah Nether Portal is good but can it really be played with discard mechanics? No. Same with Barnabus, Mage quest, Kaleidosaur, Shaman Quest, etc.

As someone who played both Yugioh and MtG extensively and is familiar with the concepts of card advantage, tempo and such, it really hurts to see these streamers, which many may regard as good evaluators and/or players, to be so wrong on so many levels. I believe man of us "normal" players would've made a much better reviewer, as those streamers failed on basic card evaluation principles, like not adding the stats and boosts of minion's effects together. That's not how that works normally...

I honestly never understood why anyone thought the Warlock quest would be good, even before ungoro came out. You have to discard 6 cards, (which, imo, is more difficult than it sounds) when only 3 cards in your deck benefit you for discarding them, and the reward is terrible. It takes 2 turns for the 5 mana to be made up for by the imps, having 2 3/2 imps out every time you end turn just... seems bad. Especially the turn you play it. 5 mana means you can't do much else. And to Trump's point, the card doesn't fit well in Disco, especially since you have to miss turn one to do it.

What's all this Eggnapper talk? I've not played as much as usual since Un'Goro released, but I've been to rank 5, and I don't think I've encountered this card once on ladder baring random minion generation. Unless this is a card that's only meta in very high ranks, I don't see how predicting that it's trash that sees zero play is incorrect. I guess it might see play in Aggro Druid variants that I've not seen? Sure, it's powerful in Arena, but so is basically anything with a decent statline.
