Thanks, too many people don't realize the use of wrist, foream/elbow and losing the stiffnes are key to controlled playing. Using this as an educational tool was a really good approach.

I do wonder how many of the inaccuracies are stylistic choices, to add some controlled drama, or maybe its a result of needing to add so much physical performance that will naturally gravitate towards errors. Yes posture is ideal, but she is also trying to be a pop level of engaging on a large stage. I remember her Glastonbury performance of Poker Face had her standing on the stool, putting her heels up on the high register and all sorts. It seems like someone who knows the rules, and what can be broken to still perform as the wider Lady Gaga persona.

You actually need to work on your technique throughout your career even if you are a professional musician/singer - it's easy to pick up bad habits along the way
@ryanmoon42072 ай бұрын
@@renegadechic the technical errors definitely sound like mistakes, especially where the timing is off and notes sound accidental. I think when she does the heel slam on the piano, that’s intentional in terms of playing wrong notes on purpose. Any “wrong notes” should still make contextual sense in terms of the songs and drama for me to personally buy into that idea. I also haven’t really heard her play anything that would make me think she is technical enough in her playing to break the rules… but i applaud her for not letting the mistakes stop her from performing and delivering an entertaining and exciting show.

What you say about posture is problematic for me. During the 70s I memorized everything, and then sat back and played with no score in front of me. But I wanted to become a decent sightreader, so I started playing through whole movements and pieces sightreading slowly, and then gradually gaining speed. After a 20 year break from piano, I started again in Dec. 1998. (For 20 years I had no piano until my aunt gave me $5,000 for Christmas in 1998, so I finally bought a piano and a silver flute.) I quickly discovered that I couldn't play anything any more, so I focused on slow sightreading on both piano & flute. Six years later I was able to play some longer Mozart & Bach pieces on the flute, and Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Mozart on the piano. HOWEVER, I could not play anything without the score before my eyes (except for pieces like the Sonate Pathétique I had memorized in 1972). Then, after moving to Ireland and going from 2005 - 2021 without a piano, I finally bought a digital piano, and went through the same process as I did from 1998 - 2005. So, HERE IS THE DIFFICULTY: I have to lean foreward and sit close to the piano in order to read the music while I play. I can't practice at full speed for hours on end like I did before because of an EDS related hand injury. I spend most of my time sightreading pieces I'm learning, so I have to rotate many pieces without sufficiently frequent repetition for memorization -- so I have to sit close and lean foreward to read the music as I play. My pianio is on a stand so I have to play sitting on a chair (like Glenn Gould). Also, my childhood piano teacher was born in the late 1890s, when they had different ideas about wrist and arm movement -- she would put a coin on the back of my hand and I had to play without the coin falling from my hand -- that's really "old school".
@MariaMaltseva3 ай бұрын
That's not old-school, it's simply incorrect. And if you don't sit properly at your keyboard, that in no way makes your position ideal.
@paulkramer78443 ай бұрын
@@MariaMaltseva It is definitely "old school" -- my teacher didn't invent the procedure -- she received the errant practice from a tradition (now happily long abandoned) which emphasized appearance rather than technique. "Too much" hand and arm motion was considered unsightly in an epoch when young ladies were expected to look elegant while playing the piano.

I don't know, I think Lady Gaga's piano playing is fine. It's just a different style, I feel Lady Gaga is much more talented than me because her vocal control is immense, and I have played Alkan and Chopin Etudes and so forth, I've played the piano my whole life and won competitions, and got my LMus when I was 14. That being said what you are suggesting is very good for a typical classical/romantic technique, but I don't think we can judge for example a Jerry Lee Lewis style of playing against a Liszt or Chopin type of technique because what is seen as jerky movements in romantic music might be part of the style of music/artistry/acting as part of another genre. What we see as wrong notes could be considered to be chord clusters or akin to vocal rasp, maybe we don't know as much as her, maybe she is using piano rasp, I've seen other jazz pianists doing what she does, ie playing an octave and putting the palm down a little to let some other random notes go down with it, it does indeed give a raspy sound, which I like in certain contexts.

Tori Amos is in perfect control though. She’s generally only sitting sideways to perform to the audience when she’s not doing anything too technically demanding, or is splitting her piano and keyboard by hands. For the big solos and larger accompaniments she will turn to face her piano or keyboard head on with a more proper stance. No concert pianist, but incredibly fluent and uniquely distinct in her playing/ musical language. One of the best of the pop/alt world for piano for sure.

I would say from watching her play Imagine live she did not impress as she didn't play the more difficult part ( the chorus) with the notorious A flat chords. I've also see a few other artists cover Imagine live on the piano and unfortunately for lack of knowledge or skill did not play it correctly. In that particular song the piano is as important as the vocal, so it's rather disappointing that artists who cover it don't bother to play the piano parts correctly.
