So about the Blum-Violette Proposal: it was this idea in the French government that would allow some Muslims living in French Algeria to become full French citizens, with all the benefits that entailed, but would allow them to still follow Muslim laws on social issues. Previously, to become citizens, Muslims would have needed to reject all parts of Islamic law, so this proposal illustrates a compromise that would’ve drawn Algeria closer to Paris by way of secularism. Cool representation of this in the game mechanic of coring!

As a french connoisseur of north african colonial history, you're completely right ! I'll add that the possibility of Algerian Muslims (and Algerian Jews between 1865 and 1870) to reject their traditional law was conditioned to the approval of the administration. This approval was never given to anyone in 80 years, which lead to the seemingly absurd situation of Christian Indigenous Algerians to be categorized as Muslims by law... (seemingly because "Muslim" was just a way of saying Indigenous people in a non-colony, as Algeria was a proper french region with french law applying to Europeans).

Je suis le Déluge : I am the Deluge (that time God drowned the earth), it's a reference to the french expressions "après moi le déluge" (after me the deluge) which is usually used by leaders to say that everything is going to collapse once they leave power. The Blum-Viollette proposal was a project by Council President Léon Blum (basically Prime Minister under the III Republic) and the former governor of Algeria Maurice Viollette to give full french citizenship to around 25 000 native algerians. The project was motivated by the fact that Algeria at the time being legally fully part of France and not legally a colony couldn't have part of its population not have political rights, which would be unconstitutionnal. The idea was to progressively extend the citizenship to the Algerians, starting to this small pro French elite. Of course it was also a colonialist tactic prefered by the French, divide and conquer which they already used to great successes in Algeria with the Crémieux decret that gave full citizenship to Algerian Jews. However one would be wrong to see in this proposal just a pragmatic and imperialist move. It was also a sincere attempt to better the situations of Algerians for many of it supporters through assimilation. To truly understand the proposal one must understand the difference between French colonialism and British colonialism, the French rarely heavily settled territories like the British did, instead they relied on limited settlements progressively expanded through assimilation and race mixing. Already in the XVIth century in Québec this strategy was utilized and its effects can be seen in the 7 Years war where France generally had more support from the Natives, aswell as today with the "Métis", an ethnic groupe borned of French fur hunters marrying Native wives. When it comes XIXth century colonization France wasn't nicer or more comprehensive of Native culture than their British counterparts, they saw themselves as superior just has much as the British. However this feeling of superiority wasn't the same, it was more cultural and political when it was racial for the British. The Scramble for Africa occurs in the golden age of the Third Republic, and the French were very proud at the time of their then stable and succesful republic, the only one of its kind among the great powers of Europe. Also they saw their civilizing mission in their colonies as a way to bring this system to their subjects, it can be seen in how they organized their colonies. When the British allied with the local rulers through indirect rule, the French disbanded African kingdoms they saw as backward and implemented direct rule as a way to "guide" the locals toward a better system (with all the usual colonial hypocrisies of course). Assimilating the Algerians was a serious political project for many, as racial questions didn't matter as much to the French than to most Europeans at the time and religiously the Republic was anti-clerical anyways, so it was believed that as they were integrated Algerians would either abandon their religion or start following it in a reformed way that wouldn't be an obstacle to the Republic. The project didn't come to pass due to various reasons, opposition of the french colonists, of the french right and because the Popular Front, the left wing governement) had more pressing issues on its hands with the German threat on the horizon. However after the Libération in 1944 De Gaulles implemented it in an extended version, giving full French nationality to 65 000 Algerians instead of 25 000, giving the rest of the population extended political right including the right to vote (although in an unfair way giving most of the power to the colonists, an Algerian vote being essentially worth less than a Frenchman vote), aswell as reorganizing the Algerian desert from a territory controlled by the military to départements under civil administration like the rest of France. The spirit of the Blum-Viollette proposal lived on long after the war as many french political figures supported the idea of integrating the Algerians, even through the Algerian War of Independance. This political project would fail to pass because of the oppostion both in France and in Algeria.

17:30 Historical context: the french colonial empire was, you could, different, than other colonial systems - because they wanted to make the colonies into integral parts of their empire. They really wanted to integrate their colonies "into" France, so that they would one day become these integral parts of main France. It was planned, that these territories would be ruled on the same law base of France and that the natives would have had representation - you know. And in our timeline, this was the case for the northern Algerian areas. In some maps of that time, you can actually see, that northern Algeria is shown in the same way, as main France - that was as far, as this idea worked in our timeline. . . . I personally find this very interesting :D

@Lowlandlord
@Lowlandlord 4 жыл бұрын
More than two really, they had two Empires and five Republics. Actually the Fifth Republic almost turned into the Fourth Monarchy, the Orleanist claimant was buddies with de Gaulle. Napoleon VI and the Orleanist (I always want to call him Henri, because most of them are Henris, but I forget his name) were both in the Foreign Legion, because they were not legally allowed into the French Army as themselves, being legally exiled. Darlan ends up getting murdered by a French monarchist, so monarchism was still around, Leclerc and his family (who were nobles and could go back to the crusades) were pro monarchy. French just like revolutions really, not sure they hate monarchism so much. Also they asked to join Britain during the Suez and share the Queen. Not even the second time there was a plan like that, in WW2 there was a plan to form a Franco-British state (quick google tells me the Franco-British Union, the names are a little vanilla here), make all the French people British citizens. Seriously, the French solution to government is to burn that mother down and try again.

Algeria was considered for some time a « département » which is an administrative division we have in Metropolitan France. It signified Algeria and in particular the northern Algiers region was as important and as integrated as any other French region. It had the same administrative status as any other place in continental France. Today, there is still this kind of relationship although the following are no longer considered « colonies » : French Guyana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, la Réunion and Mayotte (not sure about this one) are French regions. One of the French Republic’s moto is « Une et indivisible » which means « One and undivided ». These places are as integral to the French nation as let’s say Paris (irl there’s some differences but legally it’s the same).

Syria and Indochina always seem to vote to leave. By the time you go further down the tree to the buff after war goal on Soviet Union you have an insane amount of manpower even before Germany attacks. I tried this yesterday and including the manpower from East Indies had a larger army than Germany when they declared war. On extension conscription as France had nearly 6 million manpower. I definitely am enjoying the French focus tree.

This is what I did for my playthrought : gather your navy right before attacking the UK. DO NOT plan the offensive on the UK, Belgium and the netherlands like it's nothing : it is easy to defeat them but if you beat them before the munich conference, you make your work against germany a 100 times easier since tchecoslovaquia will declare war on them (since the british do not exist anymore), making it very easy to do crazy encerclements and weakening their frontline. The rest is a piece of cake. I did it on speed 5 and I'm not very good at micro, so it's a pretty solid strategy. Axis defeated by early 1940, soviets defeated by early 1943.

#giveaway Dave, my hero, light of my life and apple of my eye, I find your videos enthralling and entertaining, and they have vastly improved my skills at playing HOI4 (though I'm still a long way from your skills). The best gift I could as for is that you continue making these great videos, but if I could also get a copy of La Resistance for free then I'd love you even more (though not winning will not in any way make me love you less). Keep up the good work bud, hope you have a lovely day and plenty of coffee!

The Blum-Violette proposal was a project to give rights of vote to some muslim algerians. I will try to give simplified context: In the french colonial era, the left (politicians like Blum) encouraged colonisation to pursue the civilizing mission. The right was more reluctant, but they were usually the officers (like Marshal Bugeaud) that actually conquered colonies. The left encouraged direct rule/ integration, for example: the attempts to make algeria into actual french clay like Lorraine, While the right prefered indirect rule/Overlordship, like in morocco which retained its king.

The thing on Algeria. So it used to be considered to be a department (a sub-division of French territory) of France but Algerian Muslims couldn't become citizens. The proposal would allow them to become citizens without abandoning Muslim law. This never happened as French settlers in Algeria protested against it. This is one of the reasons why Algeria grew increasingly hostile towards France. They couldn't be citizens but were still ruled by France.

#giveaway Sooo, I heard that high heels were orginally invented for butchers in order to avoid soaking their boots in blood and also was used by Persian soldiers in 15th century and also European nobles (male nobles to be exact). Also in the past pink color was associated with men so now I can proudly go out in my pink high heels and educate everyone who points them out

#giveaway the cores in algeria focus is because of the many people that immigrated from france to algeria. those people are called "Pieds-noirs" (blackfeet). and they represented about 1 / 10 of the total population.

#giveaway As for why France can get cores on Algeria, I assume that it has something to do with the fact that there were a substantial number of French colonists there and it was a full fledged French department.

I'm having problems with this run. 3 attemps, 3 fails always at the same moment. I hold the maginot and the alps easily, but the germans steamroll me through the netherlands, mi divisions melt and deorg in seconds, even if they theoretically have a lot of defence and everything. I have even tried building forts on the border, but at tier4 they were not very useful either.
