1989 was the year that i first started follwing horse racing and Nashwan was the first great horse that i watched, a true champion. Being emotional about him as a result, in my mind he was a super horse up there with all the super stars before and after him. It seems now that the horse was forced to do too much in a short period of time and upon reflection it would have been wiser to run him to the St. Leger after the Derby instead of the Eclipse and the King George. If he had won it he would have been up there with Nijinsky. I have a feeling that Sheikh Hamdam being new to Great Britain's racing scene and life, probably not accepted the way he is now, an outsider to the establishment then, wanted to prove something to them and to himself, similarly Major Hern after his ordeal with health issues and after sacked by the Queen, he also had something to prove to him and the Queen, both went over ambitious with Nashwan, and against their better judgement took erroneous decisions and mishandled the horse. If they had planned his races more prudently he might have lived up to his true potential. If Carson is right maybe the Eclipse race caused him an injury that affected his health and racing. Nashwan possessed the speed of a world class sprinter although a stayer. It is also a coincidence that another son of Blushing Groom like him, Arazi, showed the same phenomenal speed but a knee surgury probbably led to its demise. Unfortunately both looked like conquering the World but they did not reach the expectations and one has to wonder if Blushing Groom was a factor, maybe produciong horses that run a mile to a mile and a half with the speed of a sprinter but with inherited physical problems that prevented these horses from becoming the greatest.

Just because a horse is able to race, doesn't mean it should. Willing and obedient, to force a hastily prepared 3 year old beyond the limits of its endurance is unconcionable. Yet another marvellous talented animal sacrificed far too early at the altar of greed/money/fame/records.

Rubbish!
@michaelhill62304 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Those 4 Group 1 wins Nashwan achieved have yet to be repeated in the 30 years since - that tells you something. Remember there was only 2 weeks gap between the Eclipse and the KG that year, there is usually a 3 week gap. That said he shouldn't of run in the KG anyway, instead may of been more prudent to give him a break in prep for the Arc(he wouldn't of got 14 furlongs in the St Leger)Willie Carson freely admits he got it wrong in the Eclipse and asked him to do too much in a short amount of time - remember Opening Verse went on to win the Breeder's Cup Mile so was no slouch. Also the two horses who beat him in the Prix Neil, to whom he was conceding 7lb to each would go on to win the Canadian International, Arlington Million and Japan Cup subsequently. A superstar of a racehorse was Nashwan.
@michaelhill62304 жыл бұрын
@@frankschlanker I think Cacoethes won the Turf Classic as a 4 year old but I agree with the point you are making. A lot of so called experts crabbed at the form when the season was over - for me harshly so. I wonder how long we'll wait for the next horse to win the Guineas, Derby, Eclipse and King George in the same season...We've been waiting 30 years..👍👍
