Gaunter O'Dimm is one of the most terrifying villains I've ever seen in a video game, especially once you learn more about him from the professor. It's rare that a villain can send chills down your spine like that. He puts the Wild Hunt and even the crones to shame.

I think the fact that we don't know anything about him at all, aside from the fact that he is a demon, is what makes him truly terrifying. Human beings have a history of being afraid of the unknown.

@@labra6969 We don't know if he is a demon for sure. We don't even know *what* he is, period, except that merely finding out would drive Geralt either to complete irreversible insanity, or drive him to the point of gutting himself with his own sword. Even the way Gaunter warned Geralt seemed less like a threat and more like you would tell a child not to touch a hot stove. As if Gaunter had absolutely no control over what would happen to Geralt if he were to know the truth, which is terrifying because Geralt isn't some novice to the strange and supernatural. That's some real lovecraftian shit right there.

Gaunter's pact with Olgierd bears resemblance to the pact in a story from Polish folklore between the devil and a nobleman named Mr Twardowski. In this story, the pact specifies the devil can only collect the nobleman's soul when the nobleman visits Rome which, of course, the nobleman has no intention of doing. This allows him to escape his pact until he stays at an inn called Rzym (meaning Rome in Polish), and the devil comes to collect. Similarly, Olgierd's pact is only fulfilled when they stand on the moon together, which they do when O'Dimm tricks him into meeting Geralt at a temple with a large mosaic of the moon on the floor. In the Twardowski legend after his deal with the devil, Twardowski uses a magic mirror to bring back the ghost of the wife of Polish king, Sigismund II Augustus. One version of the legend says that while being in the devil's claws he started to pray which resulted in devil dropping him on the moon, where he lives to this day. His only companion is his sidekick whom he once turned into a spider, from time to time Twardowski let's the spider descened to Earth on a thread and bring him news from the world below.

The video you ripped that translation from oversimplifies the first translation. The literal translation is something along the lines of "You are a rooster, and the rooster is only king on the dung hill he stands on." So yes, _technically_ he's implying that you're insignificant. But there's a lot of artistry being lost in that brute force translation.
@Doc_Fun2 жыл бұрын
@@Kristers_K Wow there's a lot to unpack there. First - no, it isn't. There is no objective interpretation of art, it is by its nature subjective and therefore can always have meaning - the meaning that _you_ assign it. Your view of art borders on the obejctivist view of art - and objectivism is almost universally considered a garbagefire of a philosophy so just keep that in mind. Second - You can't interpret the meaning of that statement? It's metaphorical, but it's pretty clear. He's not only saying you're "insignificant", he's saying that you're _so_ insignificant that you lack the perspective to even understand how small you really are. So, again, the translation of "You are insignificant" is akin to translating the entirety of "All's Quiet on the Western Front" to "WAR BAD". It's oversimplifying it to a comical degree. Third - if people didn't care about the artistry of the writing, then all written works would be written as though they were for children. They aren't. _You_ don't care, because you have the mental capacity of a small child, but other people aren't so limited.
@k.v.76812 жыл бұрын
@@Kristers_K There is meaning to be derived from that artistry as well, it's not just embelishments. Roosters and hens are very linked to all manners of ceremony and summonings in the Antilles. Words of wisdom and sayings there are often reserved to spiritual leaders that perform those tasks. You can see how that relates to Gaunter's nature. It also roots him in our own world, a callback to his ability to transcend time and space.

The "heart of stone" situation is not about grief or sadness or regret. Olgierd LITERALLY couldn't feel a single thing. no emotion, no feelings whatsoever. It's really important, because while he is an a-hole, it wasn't completely his fault. When you can't feel a thing, a single thing, not the sadness for your family, not the love for your wife, not even the negative feelings, i think everyone would become like him. No morality left, no regret or shame. What a shitty life. And it's not like he knew or could ever know it would happen. He made lots of bad decisions but i can't hate or dislike him. So sad :(

What a brilliant villain. A boss fight that doesn't really involve fighting him. Because it was set up in a way where you feel like he's way out of your league for a proper fight. Geralt couldn't even take on Vilgefortz on his own, let alone O'Dimm who literally stopped time on a whim. Man, I love that build up. Like, you always had a feeling he was powerful. But the influx of revelations in this part makes you think you're dealing with something way worse. That part with the Professor pushed that point so well too. Like, "Holy shit. What the heck am I fighting here? Can I even fight him?" Brilliant story, brilliant characters. I'm not sure how CDPR writes stories like these. As if they were taken straight out of the books that don't actually exist.

Nice one! Congratulations, Meg, on your completion of Hearts of Stone. On *Gaunter O’Dimm* - His voice actor is the incomparable Alex Norton, whom I did not recognise at first for having shed his Scottish accent for the role. Possibly most famous for having played two roles in the crime series _Taggart_ (1983-2010), first as a murder suspect named George Bryce in 1986, and later as the permanent fixture Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Burke from 2002-2010, Norton is mostly known to American audiences for his brief role as one Captain Bellamy - a victim of the Kraken - from _Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest_ (2006). I believe you have already heard a colleague of Norton’s named Alastair Duncan, who voiced Mimir in the new _God of War_ (2018) game, replete with a Scottish accent. Having also appeared in the _Taggart_ series btw. 1985-1994 as one Detective Superintendent Peter Livingstone, I find Duncan’s most impressive voice role to date to be Senator Steven Armstrong from the videogame _Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance_ (2013). Like Norton’s portrayal of O’Dimm, it’s award-worthy stuff. *On Olgierd von Everec* - He puts me in mind of the Russian literary archetype known as "the superfluous man"; a man of noble birth, intelligence and not a small amount of skill, but without any personal motivation to spur him to realise his true potential. For want of any meaning in life, or because they lack a sense of belonging in the world - often a result of their upbringing, cynicism, or their own self-indulgence - such characters resort to reckless action and excesses that, poetically, ruin their chances of living a good life or making a positive impact on the world. To complete this tragic archetype, the superfluous man is often acutely aware of his own shortcomings yet prefers to keep to the devil he knows rather than face the challenge of restoring his fortune or social standing (often a case of sour grapes: “If the world is cruel, why try to be better?”). Jadedness disguised as wisdom. Olgierd’s case, however, seems a blend of the archetype with a Faustian factor thrown in: he does not become estranged from his friends, nor hurt his loved ones, nor gamble with his own life out of his own volition, but as a side-effect of Gaunter O’Dimm’s infernal contract. Another side-effect of O’Dimm’s small print - Olgierd’s proverbial heart of stone - makes him lose not only Iris, but also any incentive to care for others, including himself (though his code of honour remains, which has been inculcated in Olgierd as part of his noble upbringing). Unable to die and untouched by any pangs of guilt or remorse, there is only the prospect of pushing his own physical and moral boundaries ‘til Gaunter comes to collect. As Olgierd puts it: “You know very little can hurt you, so you take wild risks, chase extreme sensations. There comes a point you’ve done it all, and all seems boring and monotonous. The trick’s to plough through that moment, go further, reach beyond what’s known as possible.” If you or anyone else has read all this, I can recommend the following examples of characters in literature that fit the bill of the superfluous man: - *Yevgeniy Onegin* from Alexander Pushkin’s eponymous verse novel (1833), anglicized as _Eugene Onegin_ . He kills his best friend in a duel and squanders a chance for a happily married life with a young woman (in a speech that has come to be known as "Onegin’s Sermon"). - *Grigory Alexandrovich Pechorin* from Mikhail Lermontov’s _A Hero of Our Time_ (1840). A contrastively sensitive and cynical military man, he is similar to _The Witcher_ ’s Olgierd von Everec, ataman of the Redanian Free Company, in being well-versed in art and poetry, yet given to such abysmal cynicism and boredom that he will happily break the heart of any woman who has the misfortune of making his acquaintance. And like von Everec, Pechorin is not only at war in a very real sense, but also at war with himself. - *Tchulkaturin* from Ivan Turgenev’s _The Diary of a Superfluous Man_ (1850). The namesake of the archetype, Tchulkaturin coins the term for the non-potential of his life and social class. - *Ilya Ilyich Oblomov* from Ivan Goncharov’s _Oblomov_ (1859), who literally spends his whole life in bed. The ultimate superfluous man, Oblomov only manages to move from his bed to a chair within the first 50 pages of the novel. Eventually making peace with his own indecision and listlessness, he dubs his condition "Oblomovitis" before dying in bed. - *Yevgeny Vasilevich Bazarov* from Ivan Turgenev’s _Fathers and Sons_ (1862), is a doctor who accidentally infects himself with typhus, yet shrugs at his own carelessness and accepts death with nihilistic indifference. - *Prince Nikolai Andreic Bolkonsky* from Leo Tolstoy’s _War and Peace_ (1869), who, out of boredom, abandons his pregnant wife in order to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. Disappointed and disillusioned after meeting Napoleon Bonaparte in person, Nikolai returns home where his wife dies giving birth to a son, Andrei. Heartbroken, he rededicates himself to raising his family, adopting a gruff and stern exterior to conceal his better nature. Though not a real "superfluous man" character from the 1850-60s, the 20th c. absurdist hero *Meursault* from French writer Albert Camus’ novel _The Stranger_ (1942) could be considered an honorary mention. Clinically apathetic to himself and those around him, he enters a one-sided sexual relationship with a co-worker the day after his mother’s funeral, only to idly shoot a man, for which he is arrested and sentenced to death by guillotine. Being in the privileged position to save himself, but feeling that his own trial doesn’t really concern him, Meursault does not object to his sentence, and accepts death with his head held high. I consider Meursault’s opening line in the novel the most noteworthy and memorable I have yet encountered in any book: “Mother died today. Or maybe it was yesterday. I don’t know.” Cheers! 😊

Olgerd's story is the most tragic, the deepest and the most instructive in my opinion. I ended the story the same way - saving him from O'Dimm. Yes, Olgerd is a bandit, but he does not deserve to be an eternal slave of Evil. No one knows how everyone would have behaved in his situation, in order to return everything he had lost. Because the Von Everec family lost its position due to the whims of fate, and not due to his own mistakes, and Olgerd just wanted to fix everything and not lose his beloved. Awesome dlc! Even more like book-narrative than main story.

I made a comment on an earlier HOS playthrough, but now that Meg has seen both endings; that is my only issue with this Expansion. Even though it can fit narratively at any point (except really before fighting the Wild Hunt at Kaer Morhen or Skellige), my opinion really remains that this fits best before Geralt heads to Skellige in search of Ciri. 1. Gaunter's advice about searching for Ciri confirms that (if you let him claim Olgeird's soul) 2. Prior to Skellige is before you meet up with Yennefer again, and if Geralt had let Triss go/ hasn't chosen between Yennefer or Triss, it allows the Shani romance to feel more guilt free. 3. Meeting the dwarves in the Witcher Ciri ending has more context when they mention a "Mr. Mirrory" and that look Geralt has on his face at the mention says it all. An "Are they really talking about who I think they are?" look mixed in with annoyance and worry. 4. Shani's sudden deployment makes more sense in context if Radovid was stil alive and Redania was still in active combat with Nilfgaard. We know from the post Main story that one way or another Redania had ceased conflict by that point. The problem is that considering how strong the enemies are in Hearts of Stone, you aren't near the required levels until at least after alot of the big events, like finding Ciri and Kaer Morhen. Helping out Olgeird and being thrown on a ship heading for Ofier while trying to get ready to kill Eredin is a weird time to do this after all hahaha Again, only my opinion and my only complaint. This DLC was my personal favourite between the 2 expansions, and I have a feeling that Witcher 4 we might see a certain Merchant of Mirrors again. Imagine if Witcher 4 involves Ciri as the main character and she has an encounter with the Man of Glass? oh the possibilities! 😎 Congrats to Meg !! 💙

Say what you will about Olgierd but I think his story is a human one. I mean who wouldn't want to be blessed with fortune or to marry the one you truly love, even without the fantasy of having those wishes come true. Olgierd just wished for things to be better, for his and the people that he loves. Don't we all wish for things to be better? Truth is, life has made real-life people feel as empty as him if not more, even without the fantasy of being immortal or having this character lose everyone that he loves and everything that made him who he was in the first place. There are things that he has done that i condemn. However, the things that he has done are not mine to forgive as much as it is not Geralt's. But what Geralt believes and what I believe is that individuals are still worthy of redeeming themselves. He will always be haunted by his mistakes, by the memories of Iris and Vlodimir (and that is punishment enough) but thanks to Geralt, and by extension us the players, he has the chance for true change, moving on, and starting anew.

I personally always let O'Dimm to collect Olgierds soul. Idk why, but I see it as a fitting ending, just like challenging Gaunter, but more like..tragic and realistic. I mean..that Geralt's "not putting my ass between arguing bitches" shit (tho he always end up doing this, yeah). Olgierd's done so much pain to his family and Iris so..yeah And you can also get an endless well of alcohol right in your pocket if you "side" with Gaunter, even though he's a dangeous peace of crap, ahaha. So no more worrying if you have enough stuff to make a potion or so, while Olgierd gives you just a sword, that will become useless few level ups later Cheers guys! And thank you Meg for putting your playthroughs on YT! You're such a treasure I randomly found while googling some mass effect stuff half a year ago. Loved your dragon age playthrough as well! And now we're getting to Blood and wine. Oh maker, get ready to be satisfied with another good story! :в

I agree, I don't think letting O'Dimm take Olgierd is "Bad". Ultimately, the man made his choice. He sold his brother's life to have the life he wanted.

Here is some tips for acid reflux. If you wish to reduce the acid eat a non acidic hard apple ie no granny smith apples or old apples. Soft apples and apple sauce do not help with acid but a hard apple contains pectin which can greatly reduce the amount of acid by giving it something to eat instead. If you wish to reduce the acidity then mix lemon juice, honey, and warm water together then drink it slowly. This concoction will reduce the acid in your stomach to base over time as well as heal your esophagus. Be especially wary of long term acid reflux as it can constrict your esphagus and make swallowing a tricky prospect but if your esophagus gets enough time to heal than all the damage over time can be reduced until surgery is no longer necessary. I suspected you would choose to save olgierd and to each his or her own. You did miss out on some fabulous items though. You will wish you had that saddle in blood and wine as there will come a time when time shall be very very much against you. Having a source of endless food when combined with a powerful enchant could have given you the ability to unleash damage far beyond your normal limits. That could have been handy for the hard challenges to come. All that is in the past though and now you are moving on to a land of storybook legends harkening back to a much earlier age. Be wary though as it also hides some of the wickedest fights against some of the greatest foes you will ever face. Olgierd is merely a weakling compared to what you will face but do not lose hope as there will be surprising allies and fantasy items that may yet still tip the scales in your favor. I guess now its time to see Milton and his lofty speeches. Just do not mistake these knights for Don Quixote as they are no mere charlatans but true followers of principles you will not find often in this modern age.

Many make the mistake of believing that Olgierd has made a wish to become immortal when in fact it is a closure of contract binding it to Gaunter's to ensure that he has his due and therefore his soul, until Olgierd made all these wishes, knowing it pertinently that's why he was in no rush for this moment to arrive, and asked for things that seemed to him impossible to achieve. Too bad you missed and went after the bridge to the left then to the right (in Gaunter's world where there was a monster at the top of the stairs (broken)) One of the best swords in the game, the school's of the Viper silver sword the very powerful.

G.O.D., and hes the master of mirrors, mirrors reflect others, he makes pacts at crossroads and wants souls as payments, and loves games he can be beat at. Hes the reflection of G.O.D, a pretender. The Devil delights in mocking God in any way he can. Gaunter isnt a Devil, he's THE Devil.

To be fair, it was Olgierd who tried to cheat by telling him the contract would be done once they were standing on the moon, O'dimm just made that happen

The letters on the wall at 13:05 are inspired from the Glagolitic script - the oldest Slavic script. One more detail from slavic culture.

Gaunter isn’t evil, he’s Evil. Evil embodied into a physical form. CDPR have explicitly compared him to Satan lol Also I agree that the “bad” ending isn’t actually bad, it’s just different. I actually prefer the “bad” ending, purely because it feels more realistic to what Geralt would actually do!!

@@Thedeepseanomad Geralt kills monsters, he doesn’t involve himself in the workings of beings much higher and more powerful not only than him, but than anything humanity can comprehend. He knows that he can’t kill him, and that the consequences of annoying him are likely to be far more sinister than if he backs away. Book Geralt would stay as far away from Gaunter O’Dimm as possible. He kills monsters, he doesn’t mess with primordial and unknowable deity-like beings.

@@Thedeepseanomad Geralt is a good man at heart, hes not a man that puts his life on the line when it could come to his life and those around them, especially in such odds. please learn a bit more about book Geralt. he wouldnt give up being with Yen and Ciri for someone like Olgeird (A man who was a horrid human being long before O'Dimm ever even came around)

ps: its the bad end because if you accept any reward its the same as having a debt with him, legitimate him to come at a later date to steal your soul. thats why if you dont save olgierd you must ask for nothing.

I've Completed at 2018 and now last 2023 December (2nd play through). Same decision and saved Olgierd von Everec from the demon. I like the character, he's unfortunate but not bad from heart actually. O'Dimm tricked him by that way. Heart of Stone is truly a masterpiece by itself. CDPR rocks. The BGM is awesomeeeeeee too.

Never thought about trying to get that other ending to the DLC, but glad I got to see it here. It's not bad, but I love Olgierd's ending. It made this DLC for me. Blood and Wine is probably the better DLC on the whole, but that bittersweet reflection, the scenery with the sunrise and everything just leaves such a lasting emotional imprint for me. This game... man, I can't believe I got the whole set (W3 and both DLC) for like 13 euros from a Steam sale years ago. Makes me feel kinda guilty almost. I wish I could get like even half the money I've paid companies like Bethesda over the years back and donate it to CDPR instead. They deserve it much more.

Hi Meghan welcome back. I know it's weird to say that because I wasn't there live but still 👋 I have to say The Witcher is a Game where (almost) everything worked. The Story, the World, the Characters, the Music, the Fights, the Graphics... I could list a few more things but these are the most important. Well, I'm definitely going to enjoy the Episode now, so I wish You and Caleb a happy new Week, have fun playing, lots of hugs to your two little Sweeties and lovely Greetings By the way, the red Hair looks so fantastic on you and I think you look really Beautiful 🥰

You sold the unique Ofieri saddle, omg!!! Something important that you bought: the falcon statuette. Dismantle it at a blacksmith. There's a theory going around that the only other human who beat Gaunter at his own game is the one who's body Gaunter possesses ever since. Which makes the win questionable. Ultimately, Gaunter is neither good or bad. He is just a distorted mirror (thus the water surface) which reflects people's true, but distorted wishes onto themselves. If he is candid with Geralt and rather supportive of his cause, it is because Geralt himself is an honorable man.

GOD aka gaunter o dimm is the most powerful character in the witcher game , i wish we'll see him in the future witcher games , though if you loved this DLC and if it reached above your expectation then you need to increase your expectations even more cause blood and wine is gonna reach even higher
