I think you missed a part of Gaunters personality: if you don't interfere with him at the end and let him take the soul of Olgierd he lets you make a wish as reward and although geralts wording is poor in every possible answer, he doesn't betray you and instead tries to transform your wish into something useful for you. This shows that he is truely grateful for that you helped him. For example 1 possible wish you can make geralt says: "I dont want to have hunger ever again". This could easily be granted by just killing geralt, instead Gaunter gives him an infinite food supply.
@TankedMush5 жыл бұрын
At the same time this can also just be put down to endong a story arc and game design. If the wish had a second meaning or curse, i think everyone would want more of gaunter o'dimm. By not having that they wrap the plotline.

Also, in the professor's Journal we learn that Odimm was able to plague his dreams every night for the rest of his life stuck in the circle. First it was just nightmares, then eventually the professor began dreaming that he had a daughter and in his dreams every night he watched her grow up, and then one day she died in his dreams and he had to deal with the real grief from it. This perfectly sums up how Odimm plays with his victims and turns all of their Joys into ashes. And just think, he did this to the man in retaliation to even being researched

Same. Gave me shivers once i finally figured out what was going on with the blind dude. Simply dying and dropping like a sack of potatoes upon stepping outside the circle would have been far more comforting because it implies O'dimm is just a powerful monster with magical abilities. The idea that causality is being bent to the will of O'dimm evidenced by how the blind man actually dies is chilling in an existential sense. They actually included a fifth element "spirit", but apparently didn't know the spirits reside in both the elemental realms of air and fire(as per Platonics and it's period, so for instance in the Bible the evil prince of the air in Ephesians is of the air, God is of fire in the OT and in the NT is said to baptize with fire).

Mixing symbols between earth and sky is a classic trickster game. As hermes thrice born says, as above, so below. Hermes is the greek edition of the egyptian God, Thoth. The symbol on the floor of the temple of lilvani is Thoth's sigil. (Thoth is a moon God, as well as a God of language and wisdom.) Gaunter O dimm gets his name from leeland gaunt and walter o dim from steven king's extended universe. Both these characters were based off HP lovecraft's outer God nyarlathotep. Nyarlathotep is a pharoah esque god who built the pyramids. He is also a nocturnal trickster entity. Nyarlathotep was based on a nightmare Lovecraft had of an evil nikola tesla. So basically, gaunter o dimm is based on nikola tesla ;)

O'Dimm doesn't hide his nature, everything is out in the open. You just have to see it. He's master mirror, he is what you are. The riddle at the end wasn't a riddle, it was an introduction. O'Dimm is only as evil as the people he deals with (that guy with the wooden spoon in his eye must have done something wrong). But to a bunch of peasant welcome enjoying a nice chat during a wedding. He's just a pleasant guest sharing gingerbread recepies. If you look at his dealings with Gerlalt, he doesn't do anything to Geralt that Geralts hasn't done to others.

He chose his fiance over his own brother, he was practicing black magic, etc. I'm not a Christian but I have read the bible and it is pretty apparent that God punishes people, especially in the Old Testament, for doing these "wrong deeds". I'm not sure why these people think he's the devil because he "punished" bad people. The Christian God has done the same thing.

If you don't already know this I just wanted to let you know Gaunter O' Dimm is based on Stephen King's character Walter O' Dimm(one name of many names, he is known for constantly changing his name and face) He is a dark wizard that is aware of his existence as a character in a book, he can freely travel between dimensions, like say into the video game series The Witcher. He is one of the main antagonists in King's magnum opus 'The Dark Tower' and the main antagonist in his books 'The Stand' and 'Eyes of the Dragon'. He is my favorite villain ever and when I saw him in The Witcher I lost my shit. He also aspired to be a God and control everything so it makes perfect sense that he would change his name to Gaunter O' Dimm, initials G.O.D.

The old lady used to be a beautiful woman. But she was cursed into a spotted wight because she refused to give the beggar any food. The curse was broken by Geralt. Ps. You should read “Between worlds” found in hearts of stone. You find the book while doing the “Scenes from a marriage” quest and it’s in the same room where Olgeird studied “Visitants” (other world beings). It differentiates Djins (d’ao) from what Gaunter O’Dimm really is.

Lucas Ciminelli witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Between_Worlds I believe so, considering that Olgierd made 3 “requests” to O’Dimm which can also be interpreted as wishes. Genies are also the most powerful ‘KNOWN’ outer beings so It’s only the most logical guess. It’s says there are genie elements who have complete mastery over one specific element like fire, earth, etc. But remembering how O’Dimm made a storm so Geralt could escape off the Ofieri boat, able to bestow Olgierd immortality and the fact he can manipulate TIME is way different from the others elemental genies. Those other genies escape to their own dimension when they complete 3 wishes, O’Dimm collects souls. I have some guess why but at the end of the day, I don’t think anyone would be able to fight him like how yen and geralt fought that one djin in the ‘last wish’. Gaunter O’Dimm is so powerful he’s bored, so his entertainment is playing humans as toys.

The most common theory I have encountered so far is that Gaunter O´Dimm is in fact the devil of the Witcher univserse and that his initials are a mockery towards God. This theory also states that one of his other monikers, namely the Master Mirror one, is another clue to him being the devil as the devil can be seen as the evil reflection or counterpart to God. However, I greatly prefer the theory in this video that establishes Gaunter as the de facto God of the Witcher universe. Aside from the fact that this would fit the kinda depressed undertones of the Witcher better, I also find it deeply disturbing that an entity which is supposed to be a loving and merciful one turns out to be a sadistic voyeur to whom humans are nothing more than toys. At the same time, he is completely uncomprehensible to humans to the point where the realization of his existence or simply a mere idea of who he truly is causes severe depression, insanity and death. Definitely one of the best and most memorable ways to handle a villain I have ever seen.
@UnifiedEntity6 жыл бұрын
He cant be the de facto God because, why would he be bounded by simple deals? And he wouldve been able to give Geralt answers about Ciri. Hes a powerful being, but definitely not THE God.
@vahlen52816 жыл бұрын
RaginDXDemon That argument is solely based on the assumption that every God has automatically be modeled after the judeo-christian version. Which is just one of many thousand deities that are worshipped. Since The Witcher is heavily influenced by old European folklore, it is more likely that the God of this universe is a pagan one. Also, who is to to say that a God always has to be omnipotent and not be bound by rules? There are countless beliefs in our world where the power of deities are limited. Even the judeo-christian God is de facto under a(self imposed) limitation due to man's free will.
@UnifiedEntity6 жыл бұрын
+Vahlen Im not convinced because of the level of the self imposed will. And the fact that through Ciri we learn there are many universes/worlds. So why would god be held down by one universe/world when the reason for the creation of things is because of god? How is a mortal beyond gods reach? Thats a severe limitation as it seems if you ask me. Then theres the defeat, Gaunter is pulled to wherever he came from, instead of just walking away in blinding light. If anything he comes off as a demi god of sorts.
@vahlen52816 жыл бұрын
RaginDXDemon Again, a God does not have to be omnipotent to be considered a God. There are countless tales of deities in our world that got outsmarted by mortals as well, so that is not really such a lore breaking event. A multiverse theory can furthermore be broken down to a couple of theories regarding its deity. Either there is just a single omnipotent one that created all of them, or every universe has its own version of God. And The Witcher universe just had the bad luck to end up with a trickster-like God that likes to make deals but is also bound by his own powers to stay true to them. At least that is what I see as a fitting version which I can subscribe to.

Geralt uses a silver sword, implying he is a monster of some sort. But we don't know his age. Gaunter is atleast a few millenia old, since the professor cited him from texts thousands of years old. This DLC was so rich with interesting lore, just like the rest of the Witcher stories. CDPR is sitting on a veritable gold mine of compelling narratives. I really hope we get another Witcher game soon. Surely they must have been working on it for a long time already. How could they not be? I really liked Cyberpunk 2077 and I definitely want to see more of that world but their absolute top priority really needs to be the Witcher. Im sure that with all of the recent interest driven by the Netflix series and the subsequent spike in book sales, surely they’re hard at work on a new Witcher game. I wouldn’t care where the new game falls in the timeline. Literally any chunk of time in this universe would be absolutely thrilling.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FACT: I don't think O'Dimm is the omnipotent one in their universe, because if you side with him at the end of the game, he'll give you multiple reward choices. One of those choices is to ask where Ciri is, then O'Dimm will reply with: "There a certain things even I cannot meddle with. Ciri is hidden from my gaze, beyond my reach". this indicates that he has limits to his power. What is your opinion FudgeMuppet?
@edi98926 жыл бұрын
EpicSheepGamer I believe that he's one god among multiple, someone similar to Loki.
@JagEterCoola6 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's quite correct. Ciri Is beyond _this_ universe. If Gaunter's the God of the Witcher 3 Universe, he's *the god of the Witcher 3* universe, not the God of whatever universes Ciri travels to.
@epicsheepgamer70026 жыл бұрын
I think Ciri is still from the Witcher universe, she just has the power to travel to other universes/worlds (somewhat like O'Dimm), but when she is in the Witcher universe and O'Dimm is in charge, then she should still fall under his rules, but don't. That leads me to think that some things like maybe "fate" cannot be messed with, even by O'Dimm. Ciri is just a mortal person with incredible powers.
@JagEterCoola6 жыл бұрын
Mmm, in that case, the Witcher 3 Is set in _our_ universe, remember? Ciri went to _our_ world, briefly.
@epicsheepgamer70026 жыл бұрын
O'Dimm probably did as well, judging from what he said at the end (when you beat him and it is explained in the video). Some people think that O'Dimm speaks languages from Earth, because he has been there. It would also make sense from a dramatical perspective as it would build on the character and make the player think on the character even more. Some think it is just Elder speech. Maybe The Witcher world is in an alternate universe?
@blackout15183 жыл бұрын
What makes o dimm so interesting is all the subtle hints towards who he really is. How you meet him at a crossroads and make a deal, how he has insane power yet disguises himself as a friendly face, how he deals in souls and can seemingly not be killed, only banished the parallels to the devil are so subtle yet they sit right in your face. Brilliant

My theory is that he is in fact both "god" and "Satan", as he is both the reflection and what is being reflected. Him having the powers of god, but the personality of the devil then makes sense, and it ads up with his obsession with mirrors and reflection. One of the main themes of the Witcher is that things are never black and white, mostly just shades of gray. So it would make sense that instead of there being an ultimate good and an ultimate evil in this universe, there would instead be something in between, someone who is both God and Gods evil reflection. I also read somewhere someone pointing out his names sounds a lot like "Haunter of dim", as in he haunts those he doesn't see as clever enough. Which makes sense, as he only hurts people he sees as fools, like the drunk man in the tavern, and he only takes the souls of people who he manages to outsmart. This is the reason for why there is always a chance for people to beat him, he could easily take the souls of anyone he wanted, but he gives them a small change to outsmart him, showing that its only the "dim" that gets punished. Which is one of the main similarities between god and the devil, they both punish those who make dumb choices and act foolishly, which leads me to believe that he is in a sense both of them.

I was replaying the game recently, when I noticed the mark he puts on Geralt's face resembles the Greek rho and phi letters and even more ancient phoencician / arameic "beth" (house) and "qoph" (monkey), with "qop" being also number of the Sun, basically the mark might mean "the house of Sun" or "the house of the Lord". Tenuous at best and might also relate to the Sun as in Lucifer connection, i.e. the devil, but who knows

Yeah, I've read similar things in KZbin comments. How do you kill a "god" or the devil? Vampires on the other hand, albeit difficult to kill, maybe even impossible for humans to kill, are still living beings. They are nothing compared to an entity that can bend reality, I suspect Gaunter can make the unseen elder disappear with a click of his fingers.

@@mrnobody6354 I mean the unseen elder is basically unkillable by anyone other than the likes of Gaunter (if others like him exist and I hope fucking not) as from what we know the elder vampires are the strongest beings and can only be killed by their kinds and the unseen elders are the strongest of the race.
