Around 20:15 you said something similar to what I've been feeling about the show: "Heartstopper is not realistic. It's believable." And that's the most important, that kids and teens who see this today know that it COULD happen to them. It doesn't gloss over the homophobia, the anxiety, the questioning. But it's a beacon of hope for so many. It's the "it gets better" slogan shown on screen. Find the people around you who make you feel safe, and things will be okay.
@josephcarriker39672 жыл бұрын
All of this. Honestly, the most wonderful part of Heartstopper isn't that it has no awfulness in it (it does). It's how aspirational it is in depicting people who freely love and care for one another. All of our main characters are SO brave in expressing how they feel, in a way that isn't entirely realistic, if only because lots of people let insecurities and fear of "sounding stupid" get in the way of saying the things they do here. As a (much lol) older queer person, I used to be just happy to get queer characters in my media, even though a lot of them were tragic or awful characters. They existed, but there was rarely anything aspirational about them - these characters are the people that I want to be, that I would love to have been when I was their age. I love the thought of young queer people just...experiencing these stories and taking to heart the brave and loving ways they interact with and care for one another.
@daanroelofs1192 жыл бұрын
that has been the trend in the show and the books as well. Of course it is not realistic, but there are so many individual topics that actually happen to many, many kids which I think is amazing
@G1NZOU2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely this, the show doesn't pretend homophobia doesn't exist, but it does do a good job of saying "things might not be as bad as you fear". And it does an incredible job of properly demonstrating good communication and friendship support in a healthy way. Whenever a misunderstanding happens the show expresses so well how good communication can help solve issues. It isn't how every relationship will be 100% of the time, but it realistically shows the potential for what can happen if we try hard and don't give up hope, and that's a really good message for LGBTQ+ teens to experience.

They actually mentioned that part of their prep was to really get to know their characters and that they did a 'hot chair' with them sitting in turns down and answering all kind of questions to their character, even non related to the script. Like what's their favorite music, movies, where are their parents from, when did they divorce and so on. So yes, they really did prepare them well and they are outstanding good. Kit Connor kills it though in my books, these little changes you can indeed see on his face. He can transfer emotions with a little change of facial expression or the way he pauses, breathes and so on better, than some with a whole monologue. Too many teen actors have so limited facial expressions. That scene on the bench with Imogen, its like Emmy nomination stuff to me.

I'm really hoping for Imogen to be a key supporting character for Nick in season 2. She seems such a good person and understanding when Nick pretty much gave a soft coming out to her. Both her actress and the writers really struck a balance between keeping her as the potential relationship rival while keeping her a caring good person.

Another reactor pointed this out about the scene at 5.40, about perspective, Tao looks at Nick and sees Nick talking with Imogen, and then Charlie looks at Nick, and sees only Nick. Which was a clever way of showing what the both of them see. Tao sees a guy who is straight, who is playing with Charlie, who is friends with bullies, and Charlie sees his boyfriend. Or at least the guy he really likes, and who he is going out. Also thank you for the understanding about Tao! I love Tao, and I see that he is also a bit selfish in telling Charlie about Nick, a large part is definitely love and care and worry for Charlie! So many people only see the selfish part and call Tao toxic even. A lot of reactors are really hating on Tao. Which seems really extreme to me. Tao clearly wants to protect Charlie, and while his motives are not completely selfless, he does want to help Charlie. :) I think Imogen cottoned on to what Nick wasn't saying here. And then she shows (instead of just saying it) that she actually is an ally and protects Nick from Harry and nosiness.

The line that Nick says about repressing his true personality, that is so relatable to me as a trans person. If you watch closely when Nick tells Charlie about how he felt pressured to say yes to Imogen and felt bad because her dog died - Charlie actually smiles a little bit. I think it’s because he’s so proud of being with someone who cares about other people and he sees that Nick doesn’t wanna hurt imogens feelings. It makes Charlie so proud to see Nick not just care for Charlie but for others. I really loved this reaction. I’ve heard it described as a second adolescence almost when queer people come out and are able to fully embrace themselves. That time when straight people are figuring themselves out and exploring/ discovering who they are, queer folks may be closeted which hinders that ability for them to the same degree. I think people can see it as queer people being extra or over the top but I see it more as they didn’t have the ability to be themselves fully and figure things out when people would have given them more grace as a young person. Now as an adult is seems weird but I get it.

My response was similar but slightly different. Nick is always trying to do the right thing, and the right thing is really muddy up until the birthday party. Purely speculation, but I imagine him planning to have the "I don't like you like that" talk sometime before the date but maybe he hadn't worked it out that far yet, in any case he was still feeling uncertain in his approach and trapped until he got some clarity. Then two things happened at the bowling alley. First he overheard Tao's and Charlie's conversation. Already feeling guilty about keeping their relationship secret in the abstract, he is confronted with concrete consequences to Charlie for the secret. Then Charlie says "what, you actually went on a date with her" and "its not like we're officially dating." My heart ached when he said those (bravo Joe Locke's acting), so Nick's must have broken. No matter what stumbling he's done up to that point (prioritizing Charlie's gift over dealing with Imogen, being frozen in his tracks and putting it off) after those two daggers to his heart and the further blossoming of his love for Charlie, his path forward became crystal clear and he knew he had to act decisively and immediately to make things right.

Late to the party but loving your reactions. A thought: When Nick arrives at Charlie's party, he's still got a date with Imogen later that night. He hasn't figured out how to withdraw and at 4 pm, it looks like he's planning to go through with it, whatever his internal feelings. The only reason Charlie knows about the date is that Tao told him. And the only reason Nick KNOWS that Charlie knows is that Nick overheard Tao and Charlie in the bathroom. We'll never know what Nick would have done if Tao's actions hadn't pushed Nick's feelings so hard. He might have gone on the date, as a nice guy, and I have no idea what Nick thought would happen on Monday...there's no way Charlie wouldn't hear about it from someone else. So I fully support Tao in this one, no matter how heavy handed his sincere, loyal 15 year old self was. Tao KNOWS that Nick is there at Charlie's party, flirting, and he knows that Nick is going on a date and probably knows it's that night - Harry said Imogen was telling everyone. When Tao tells Nick "You're messing with him" and Nick replies "You're right," it's because Tao is pointing out what looks like Nick two-timing. Tao stepping up and telling Charlie AND confronting Nick helps Nick realize he's so fully committed to Charlie, he's about to make a really dick move. I also think that Nick overhearing the bathroom conversation is what pushed Nick into some kind of clarity. When Charlie says "But....but he's....," you can see the alarm in Nick's eyes as he listens at the door. It's a huge test of everything and Nick is frozen, waiting to see if Charlie will go ahead and tell Tao the truth about Nick and himself, even secretly, to make it all make sense. And when Charlie doesn't, Nick's eyes close briefly in relief and simultaneously in regret and guilt as the burden Nick has placed on Charlie comes into full focus. Charlie passes the test at serious cost to himself and his friendship with Tao. He chooses Nick when he could have outed Nick, assuming Nick would never know. Nick could have lost Charlie in a moment of broken trust still in its infancy. And Charlie emerges from the bathroom to a frantically processing Nick who instinctively goes for the hug in the only safe place he knows in all of this...Charlie's arms. I don't think poor Nick had had time to really process the road he was on when he walked into the bowling alley. It's kind of weird to watch him walk into the party and greet Charlie with such open affection when we know he's got other plans later with a girl. But that hug outside the bathroom was the moment when Nick fully chose Charlie in a moment of silently explosive relationship and trust growth. He now has clarity and knowledge he didn't have when he walked into the place. It lets him answer Tao honestly, it lets him speak aloud "I really like you" with all the implications that has for a teenager, and it gives extra poignancy to his statement "I wish I knew then what I know now." So don't knock Tao too hard. His actions are what move Nick and Charlie's relationship forward. Without him, there might have been a serious blot on Nick and Charlie's fledgling relationship, and Charlie might have held a small part of his heart back going forward, even if they survived it.

@@G1NZOU Yes. A perfect example is the B&Q advert Kit did with Dexter Fletcher before Rocketman. It's literally only a minute but it's all about visual expression and you completely understand what he's feeling through his face alone. Already said that, but I like the way you manage to take a step back to see the whole picture and not be angry at Tao, for example. I love the relationship between Nick and his mom and I think it’s a huge part of why he works so hard at communicating openly and honestly, especially with someone like Charlie who Nick knows understands him. The fact that Nick trusts his mothers opinion so much and can talk to her about the stuff with Imogen is so great, and it’s another way the show models healthy communication and relationships. I think it’s also so important for young people to see these kinds of parents relationships along with the friendships and romantic relationships. I assume seasons 2&3 will show more about Nick’s family life, which will illustrate why his relationship with his mother is so important to him and how much it impacts even his day to day life. And I appreciate all your comments about Tao and imogen as well, as many other commenters have pointed out. All the characters are believable, especially for their ages, I think sometimes bc Nick works so hard to communicate honestly it makes other characters seem less mature but they’re all young teenagers. It’s okay for them to make mistakes and take time to fix them or self reflect. Tao and Elle have bigger roles in the show than in the comics, so I think they had to expand on his motivations. Im looking forward to seeing more of them in the next two seasons. I think you will really like episode 6, it’s also one of my favorite episodes of the season.

I think the Tao's arc on "not liking Nick" wasn't explained as well compared to the graphic novel. In the original, his motives were more solid and less "superficial" per se. Kit and Joe are very good actors indeed. In different ways, Kit has agency/control over his facial expressions, tell so much without a word. And Joe created the "Charlie's voice", has a softness and sweetness (and sadness when needed) which is the character. :)

In the book, Tao had accidentally outed Charlie by saying something a little too loudly after Charlie had told his friends, so he is overprotective of Charlie due to the guilt he has and he really doesn’t want Charlie to get hurt again. We don’t find out about this until the third book, but there are a few other things in the show that they move to season 1 that aren’t until the third book either, so I’m not sure why they chose not to include that element. Tao and Elle’s crushs on each other and obliviousness about the others crush is exactly like this in the book though. They both just like each other and value their friendship too much to risk anything unless they’re 100% certain it could work out.

After a while, people get used to him being so nice that they don't even notice it, but we should talk more about how Nick has always done the right thing (at least to his abilities), considerated other people's feelings and how he's literally a walking textbook example of what to do in all the situations he found himself in. I feel Nick didn’t know if he was actually going to go on the date with her until the very day of the date. So when he decided what he was gonna do. he texted her saying he couldn’t do tonight anymore. So he did tell her before the date at least.

Loved and agreed with so many of your takes on various aspects of this episode and the broader conversations. I think sometimes reactors forget that not every character is privy to the all of the information we are as the audience. So that was very refreshing to see ☺️ Also along with the hopeful yet grounded take on young queer life/romance this show takes, I particularly love the depiction of healthy communication between various characters. From friends to romantic interests, teachers, parents etc. there have been so many instances of these kids discussing their feelings with people they care about instead of bottling things up until they blow up in their faces which is so refreshing. Drama happens, and like you said they’re not perfect because they’re young but they try and I think that’s important to see and to show young audiences.

Absolutely, this show is a great role model for both straight and LGBTQ+ teens on how good communication and respect for the other partner's feelings makes for a good relationship. Pretty much every reactor I've seen absolutely spots the red flags from Ben in episode 1, how Ben doesn't care about Charlie's feelings, but Nick is so empathetic to Charlie and guilty about their relationship being secret hurting Charlie. It's so heartwarming that it's not only an inspiration for LGBTQ+ people but a demonstration on how real genuine relationships should function in a healthy way.

Love how understanding you are about Tao's perspective on things - a lot of reactors get quite frustrated with him in this episode, but it's definitely more complicated than just jealousy.
@JonInCanada12 жыл бұрын
If you read the comics, you also know that Tao was the one who outed Charlie (by accident), so he's protective and still a bit guilt ridden about it; the problem is, his insecurity and his own biases are interfering with his mindset. It's not that he's wrong it's that he's, more often than not, got shit timing. That said, his retorts to Harry are epic.
@zakikin60062 жыл бұрын
@@JonInCanada1 shit timing or not he’s literally the person who protects Charlie the most out of everyone and it’s actually really sad that Charlie didn’t even tell him and he was the last in the group to know about nick and Charlie through finding out by someone else, just because he tries so hard to protect Charlie to prevent him being bullied comes across as him being jealous and unacceptable of Charlie and nick doesn’t mean he’s a bad character at all
@JonInCanada12 жыл бұрын
@@zakikin6006 Ok, now I'm not sure if you have a reading comprehension problem or you're just being obtuse, but nowhere in my comment did I say or imply that Tao was a bad character, I even make the point he's not wrong; you just chose to infer that I said something I didn't and took offence. That's on you, not me. As for Charlie not telling Tao about him and Nick straight away, gee, can't imagine why he would be hesitant...oh wait yes I can. Tao was hostile to Nick from the get go so of course Charlie would be somewhat reticent to tell Tao immediately. Have you no understanding how Tao riding Nick down at every turn would make Charlie nervous about telling him? Also, Charlie made it clear to everyone, including Elle, that he was going to tell Tao, but Elle let it slip first which took away Charlie's chance to say something. Now, I trust that clears things up for you.

Also Kit Connor (Nick) is such a good actor at showing his emotions with his face and its amazing because most of them like Joe Locke (Charlie) Tobie Donavon (Isaac) Yasmin Finney (Elle) this is all there first acting gig and alot more actors on the cast Kit Connor has done some other gigs when he was younger but it crazy how these actors went from not being known to the public to suddenly being on a show that hit 20+ million hours of watching within the first month and it hit the top 10 on Netflix in like the first week they went from not being known to the public to suddenly being known and its insane
@GirlLovesFairytale2 жыл бұрын
I love that you get Tao so much more than alot of other people who reacted to the show :) And Tao doesn't know that there already is something going on with Charlie and Nick and even then Charlie chose not to tell Tao about Nick being his boyfriend. You can see it's making Nick so sad for Charlie because it's not only his own emotions but also knows Charlie has a difficult time because of their relationship. The met you when I was younger comment is also reference to the bullying part. He knows how Charlie is struggling that and he wanted to be there to help.

Something else regarding Tao is that these characters aren't adults. They're 14, 15 and 16 year olds, with all the immaturity and emotional volatility and inexperience and problems expressing their feelings that teenagers that age tend to have. So Tao is protective of Charlie AND distrustful of Nick, AND scared that he'll lose him, AND has no real idea how to deal with these contrasting feelings in a productive way or explain how he feels to Charlie or Nick, so it comes out as him being sullen or throwing tantrums.
@nitsugazemag2 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU! I’m so glad you understand Tao. Tao only feels like an antagonist because he’s “in-the-way” of Nick and Charlie’s relationship, but he doesn’t know everything we, the audience, know, and what little he has received, though misinformed, shapes his perception of the situation. I agree that Nick could’ve handled the whole Imogen thing better and tell Charlie, himself, sooner, but I understand. I can’t wait for you to finish this season and see your reactions. I’m kinda eager to see how you feel by the final shot… The wait for season 2 is racking my nerves in anticipation. I refuse to read the 3rd and 4th book. I like to be surprised when I see the series/movie and get more from the source material later.

I'm 55 and I would have absolutely loved this show as a pre-teen. What I had was "Three's Company", "Soap", a few 'very special episodes' of shows like "Family" (I'm Bi and I had a major crush on Kristie MacNichol), and a few years later the first season of "Falcon's Crest". By the next couple of seasons the young gay character wound up in a relationship with a woman. As far as lesbians go, they were always histrionic or evil killers, with the exception of a character in Soap who wound up sleeping with Jody, Billie Crystal's character. I'm very glad this show exists for my four grandchildren when they are 9 or 10, because I know kids as young as that are definitely watching this show now. My kids definitely would have. For that matter, I wish this show had been around for them, even though they had more positive queer exposure at an early age than the average kid.

I think one of the things this show (and the comics) does that is really special is give ALL young people, regardless of their sexuality, a blueprint for how to have a healthy relationship. Nick and Charlie don't always get it right but they are kind and honest and we so rarely see that as a two way thing in films and TV these days. I don't want to undermine it's huge importance for LGBTQ+ folks because that's a really big deal but I think there is other amazing stuff about the show which is talked about less.

Yeah, one of my favorite things about this show … well, you know how they say you’ve written a bad story if the whole plot could be resolved by the characters sitting down and having a conversation? Well, in Heartstopper, they have that conversation and then get on with something else. It’s refreshing.

I love your take on the show and the characters! I think we're so used to more one-dimensional characters that are overly focused on one personality trait, so I love that the characters in this have their strengths AND their flaws, and you can see them doing their best where they're at 😊

I loved your reaction to this episode! You really understand and appreciate what makes Heartstopper so good. I also agree that the show's importance CANNOT be overstated. It's literally going to save lives. Even as someone in their thirties who is "only queer from the ankles down" (my husband's words which, though true and hilarious, he's not allowed to repeat because ace erasure is a thing) the show has been on my mind non stop since I first watched it. It's got me diving into queer KZbin, reading books that reflect my own experience and made me realise a few things about myself that I'd never really considered before. I can only imagine what the show would mean to, say, a 14 year old who's questioning their own sexuality or gender identity. Oh and if Kit Connor doesn't win at least three BAFTAs and an Oscar within the next decade, I will come back here and find a way to eat this comment.

I have said it once and I will say it again the people who picked the music need a HUGE raise, actually everybody needs a raise. Take all the money from, the show nobody wanted, the hype house show and give it to this show, so they can expand the budget, so hopefully we can see the Paris trip from the books and turn it in to something you can watch and enjoy, and give the people who worked on the show the actors, producers, and directors the raise they do deserve.

For this show is surprising for two greats reasons : - All the characters, have normals problemes, but they always take the rights decisions to solved it. - Even if this show almost don't have drama, the all thing is strangely realistic, and make me believe that the situations were everything goes well can exist.

I love that this show is not only very helpful for queer people but even for straight/ cis people as well. Because of shows like this they might be able to learn about acceptance for others and it maybe also helps people who have prejudices against queer people for whatever reason to realize that they are infact just prejudices and that there's nothing to them🙋🏼♀️😌♥️ I feel like this show can really open someone's eyes One thing I really love about this show - and that's coming from soemeone who usually loves well filmed intimate scenes like in Young Royals or Call me by your name, my policeman etc - that it's so suitable to watch for everyone basically. Like for example this is an lgbtqia+ show you could easily watch with your parents, maybe even with parents who are a still somewhat uncomfortable or non- understanding of certain aspects of the lgbtqia+ community or even for children that are still younger and maybe in 5th grade or so because all these topics are becoming, sometimes faster,sometimes slower, a thing in their lives and it really is going to help them through these things. Even the lgbtqia+ aspect left a side, just the storyline with Nick standing up for Charlie when he's being bullied teaches you so so many great things, how you somettimes even have to turn against your friendgroup and do what's right because it's the right thing to do and that homophobia or bullying in general is never ''just a joke'' or ''funny'' definitely one of the best shows ever made in my opinion ❤

As a young lgbtq+ person this show really has helped me. i truly love romance movies and books but i rarely see myself in them and if i do its heavily sexualised. just seeing two boys my age living their lives to the fullest really brings me a sense of safety and comfort. the books really did save me aswell and i couldnt be more happy :] (my grammar is horrendous by the way im so sorry lmao)

IT WAS JUST RENEWED FOR TWO MORE SEASONS!!! 😃 This means we're probably getting the entire comic series! Also you are the only one who has brought up Elle's insecurities about liking Tao as being because she's trans, and I really appreciate that. A lot of it has to do with change, yeah, but as a trans person, I really related to that specific moment. I'm glad you caught that shift in expression.

Thank you Harry! What an excellent reaction and analysis just full of insightful commentary. Yes, exactly! Heartstopper brings the story-relevant drama without unnecessary drawn-out extraneous drama. And it really does bring the kindness, caring and hope. Kit Connor and Joe Locke are as close to perfection as anyone could hope for as Nick and Charlie and that elevates Alice Oseman's already brilliant writing. ** And, yes, not One but Two more seasons! "Friend" was a phenomenal episode, this had so many wonderful scenes like Nick's talk with his mum, Nick's talk with Charlie and Nick's talk with Imogen. I was really looking forward to your reaction to this one as much as to "Kiss" and ...episode 8. You do not disappoint! I mean, you're right, there still is a lot of negativity, homophobia, transphobia and just plain ignorance in the world but maybe a lovely piece of art like Heartstopper can gently benefit those with questions about themselves and everyone else too. Communication and visibility (yes, representation) really do inevitably and eventually defeat ignorant hate and baseless fear. (We) Look forward to your reactions to the remaining three .... thanks for sharing your passion and creativity! all the best to you, 💙💛, k

I agree with every single word of you... and more... even for people that haven't this series while struggling at younger age (me for instance)... this would literally help me a lot to understand myself and maybe (just maybe) would help me build some courage to accept me earlier and coming out earlier as well. Even now, it warms my heart this show and help me process things that still raw inside me.

Yes yes yes. I'm a queer parent and have a queer kid who's in 6th grade (US - I think the same as UK Year 7?), and we've watched it together, and it's bittersweet for me that I didn't have anything like this, but I'm so so thankful my kid has it. And that all kids have the modeling of healthy conversations and relationships (not just romantic relationships, either). It's just so amazing, both as entertainment and as a resource. And yes, the whole cast is so great, but especially Kit. You can see every little bit of Nick's emotion, and Kit just NAILS it.

I absolutely love this show 😭 everyone I watch react to it talks about the communication levels, and even as a straight person, even as a Christian (yes I'm a Christian watching Heartstopper 💀) I think there is still a lot I can learn from. each relationship in this show shows a different aspect of communication that I can relate to and apply to my own life, even if I don't relate to the queer part of it. plus I'm such a hopeless romantic lol and this show is just such a joy to watch 🫶
@adalon378 Жыл бұрын
This shows does so much in such short time due to the talent of everyone involved in it. Emotional growth is a very obvious theme too for me. Nick for example is very advanced, which allows him to be able to learn about himself, and care about other at the same. Charlie too of course. Imogen is interesting because she is growing emotionally in front of us, from looking at the popular rugby kid as a boyfriend because the other girl didn't want him... to listening to Nick and just realising "yeah, that makes more sense". And that's such important learning... Then we have Harry who will take a lot more time to learn.. And Tao is more similar to Imogen, but in a different scenario where his relations were good, but he freaks out when the balance is "threatened". To me, it's the same immaturity as Imogen, and Tao's case is much harder to cope with since it's the fear of losing, before having learnt how to deal with it.
