I'm so glad that Nick didn't go for the big public kiss at the sports day. At the time he thought Charlie wanted to break up, so he took him to a private place to tell him how he felt instead of putting all of that attention on Charlie if he didn't want it. And then he spoke to Charlie about wanting to come out to people be cared about, because he knew it would affect him too. Yet another example of the characters just talking to each other in a healthy way in this show, instead of making it worse

@heyitsmira172 жыл бұрын
The best thing abt Nick and Charlie's story is how, no matter the conflicts, they're a very healthy couple. They love one another purely, and even though things may be hard, this remains unchanged. It's easy for media in general, specially romantic stories, to have couples that have big tense moments, unnecessary conflicts related to miscommunication, one failing to unserstand the other... so I'm glad this wasn't the case for them. It shows that relationships can be filled with love and care.
@KayleBradley2 жыл бұрын
This show always takes the right path rather than the expected trope and I can't stop loving it for that. Like a big public kiss would have been an amazing shot, but you're so right that Nick needed to check in with Charlie first. A respectful king!

I love how the scene in the corridor with Nick and Charlie is a complete mirror image of the scene in Charlie's room the morning after the first kiss. In that scene Charlie was babbling uncontrollably freaking out and saying how he had forced Nick to kiss him and he was so sorry and Nick just took him in his arms said his name and kissed him Whereas here we have Nick freaking out over maybe losing Charlie and just spurting out all his feelings and really just wearing his heart on his sleeve while Charlie calmly says his name and then he takes Nick in his arms and kisses him. This show is so fantastic and I cant describe how much it resonates with me even as a gay man in his late thirties. I have been so happy watching this whole thing and I only wish I had something like this to watch back when I was in school to show me that it was ok to feel how I felt and that everything could still be ok. If we had had a heartstoppers equivalent back then I might not have felt that I had to repress my true self until well into my twenties, i am so glad that this exists and that younger lgbtq people can have such a positive and heartwarming view of being different wether its gay like me or bi, trans or the many other wonderful branches of the spectrum.

I’m definitely not Olivia Coleman, but I am a mom of an LGBTQ teen (the G and the T). One of the ways I try to be a supportive mom is that I buy A LOT of books with LGBTQ characters, most of which I end up reading while my son rolls his eyes and reads Steven King instead. My son has read the first book in the Heartstopper series, but said it was so sweet it gave him a toothache. And he’s refused to watch the TV show, because “ugh, sappy romance”. I of course have read the entire series and not only watched the Netflix show, but also commentaries like yours. There are so many queer adults watching this show and staying they wish it existed when they were teens. But I’m curious, how many young gay teens actually want to watch wholesome romance. My son definitely doesn’t, but I thought it was a great show. I’m glad I can at least create an environment where he can actively choose to roll his eyes at it, instead of feeling like he needs to hide who he is.
@LainesPEIWilds2 жыл бұрын
Maybe he’ll get there someday :) My own queer kids and I devoured this show together as it was so so special. I’m obsessed though and they just laugh at me, but I think it hits differently as an adult who was missing this rep growing up. It’s so healing 💕✨

Congrats to you and his son - him for having the freedom to be who he is, with a supportive mum like you in his life :D I'm so glad that watching/reading Heartstopper was such an enjoyable and insightful experience for you! I had a similar experience; I only came out as an adult a few years ago, it was queer media (Gentleman Jack) that acted as the catalyst to make me realize I am pan, and I was comfortable enough with how queerness is accepted in modern society to come out to everyone without feeling any fear that I wouldn't be accepted. Representation through LGBTQIA+ characters is a very powerful thing. But don't worry if your son isn't into watching/reading queer media (Stephen King is a cool choice - too scary for me but he's an incredible writer, and an even more incredible queer/trans ally). The same way kids need to be free to be themselves, kids also need to be free to pursue their own particular personal interests; if your son doesn't want to watch queer romance it doesn't necessarily mean he's ace or aroace (though he could be), it could just mean he has more diverse interests outside of his queer identity. You can be very proud that you've brought up a young man who is complex, curious, well-read and brave(r than scaredy-cat horror-avoiding me ;P)
@fernogaming62012 жыл бұрын
I don’t even think words can describe how incredible of an experience it is to watch that show as a queer. I’ve never felt so seen in a show before, and have never seen a happy cheesy love story for queers. Heartstopper shows the queer experience in such an optimistic and joyous light, yet tackles the challenges the community still faces today. What makes this show so special is that positive lens, rather than using the negative challenges the community faces as the main lens of the show. I do think shows like that are important, but having media like Heartstopper is just as necessary to have for everyone to see, queer or not. It is perfect, and it needs a season 2 as soon as it can possibly be done

One thing I think a lot of people miss is whenever Charlie is standing on his tiptoes it relates back to the beginning where he describes to Tori what kind of person he wants and he says tall. Charlie finally got everything on his wish list and more. We all would love to have a “Nick”. Even though this series is brand new the story is very old. What I especially liked about the switching scene thing (bc in the comic, they’re first at the beach and the volume 2 ends with the coming out scene) is that Nick talks about coming out and when charlie asks him shortly after if that means that they’re telling people now, we know already that Nick sticks to his word and technically immediately after the beach day tells the him closest Person about charlie: his mum. So, his „yeah“ about telling people and especially the people that matter, gets so much more positive weight. So for me the swapping of order was just perfect, ending with this intimate and comforting famous hug of nick and Charlie and wholesome happiness 💕🌈🍂🐶

This episode had me in tears because i know I’m never going to have a supportive family (like Nicks mum) and it sucks. I really wished I had this show when I was 14/15 because it would of made accepting myself a whole lot easier. Here I am as a newly turned 19 year old and I still struggle with who I am. Heartstopper is a show that I will remember forever and will always appreciate because it showed me that it’s okay to be who you are, it’s okay to love whoever you want and it’s also okay to just be your authentic self. I relate a lot to Nick (because of his discovering himself journey) but I also relate to Charlie in the sense that I apologise for literally everything and I always feel like I’m a burden too people (I’m working on that) but I also relate to Tao because I’m so terrified of being alone and losing my friends too the point where I will do anything too please them (it’s a thing I’m trying to work on now). This show will bring such comfort too so many lgbtq+ people and I’m genuinely so proud of everyone who was a part of this amazing story.

Heartstopper is honestly the most wholesome and adorable Igbt+ series I have ever seen. Alice Oseman has created a fantasy world where leaves and hearts swirl at a glance, and sparks fly over a simple touching of hands, and yet it feels so real because as a teenager that's how it actually felt. There’s no drama for the sake of drama and conflict is resolved through open and honest conversation. I can only imagine how different my life might have been had there been a show like Heartstopper when I was in school.

I too thought “ohh i dont want to read the graphic novel cuz im in for the surprise”, but when i finished the season i was SO needy that i could not stop myself and i entered on a obsessive mode: i bought all the 4 graphic novels volumes to support the queen herself Alice Oseman, i payed extra for the fast delivery and it arrived the next morning. I read them all in a day and i still needed more, so i read all the remaining releases of the story online and now im up to date with a 6 years worth of Heartstopper and I STILL NEED MORE! This series came to me the moment i needed most; much like Charlie i did have some tuff moments in my life and this amazing story helped me to deal with bottled up trauma from my earlier school days (note: im only 18 lol) and now im slowly healing. The only criticism i have towards the story is that Alice have created such high standards of relationship that im not accepting anything less then a Nick Nelson for myself!

its implied that the next season, they'll go to paris (cause they go there immediately after in the comics) but its interesting what the story would be cause the main conflict of that arc in the comics was charlie not telling tao about his relationship with nick and how tao was indirectly responsible for charlies outing. since they concluded the first one within this season, i wonder how that will affect the upcoming season

Great reaction, Corey. I guess you won't be labelled the master of understatement! What a satisfying ending to season 1. Like Call Me By Your Name, they didn't focus on drawn-out negative story arcs - they showed us the joy and beauty of a budding and deep relationship and how Nick and Charlie worked through the challenges. The coming-out scene with Olivia Colman was the icing on the cake (chocolate - not bubblegum flavour!). As for Ben, my take is that he was jealous of Charlie when he massively upgraded to Nick - that someone well-respected actually valued Charlie as more than an excuse to steal a forbidden, wipe-your-mouth-kiss - hence he had to denigrate him even more. I understand that future episodes will deal with Charlie's eating disorder. With Nick in his court, this should make for another moving display of their commitment to each other.

I understand that you don't want to read the graphic novel so that you don't get spoiled for the future season, but I really hope that you consider reading it maybe after watching the next season since it is also an amazing experience!

Nick came out to the queen of england that's a big deal! (For reference Olivia Coleman played Queen Elizabeth 2th)

He did indeed

Also, in the comic, she says "I wasn't born in 1920". Olivia first played a queen in The Favorite, which is set in the 18th century, so I think the line change is a fun nod to that.

You look like a toddler being taken from a candy store at the end XD. It was so cute I didn't want it to end either. 😩

Like others, I was quite impressed with your perceptive analysis of the series. I've watched several reactors react to Heartstopper, and your analysis is tops. You made me realize that the show was more subtle and intelligent than even I realized, and I'm pretty good at this sort of thing myself. Having said that, I can't believe that a person as obviously intelligent as you are missed the Elle/trans thing. While watching your reactions, I kept waiting for you to have an epiphany. I guess it's a case of aliquando bonus dormitat Homerus. Anyway, my take on Ben is that he was probably attracted to Charlie from the get-go. After Charlie was outed, Ben saw an opportunity and moved in thinking it would be a low-risk relationship for him which he could also keep covert. He could satisfy his same sex needs and not have to worry about making a mistake with a straight boy. The problem for Ben is that he now realises that he really loves Charlie. Frankly, who doesn't love Charlie? The fact that Charlie has dumped him for Nick is eating Ben alive. I'm sorry, but Ben is clearly 100% gay. Him saying he wasn't gay is just plain ridiculous, but we know he was just trying to hurt Charlie with all that nonsense at the cinema. Talk about denial! In short, Ben has a rather severe case of internalised homophobia, and he's projecting his self-hatred at both Charlie and Nick, who Ben regards as his rival. He's really a quite tragic figure, and I feel like things are not going to end well for Ben. Yes, he's a jerk, but I'm concerned for him. I also think Harry is suffering from a case of "Ben-itis" as well. Believe it or not, I don't think Harry is in the same league as Ben, though. I'd like to see more of the Ben and Harry backstory, but I don't think I'm going to get it, and that's too bad.

Season 1 is based on books 1 and 2 of the novel, so you can read it because it's amazing and show some different perspectives. Season 2 will probably be based on book 3.
