My favorite part about the last scene was watching Joe and Kit act their ASSES off damn. The bit where Nick is hugging Charlie he asks "do you still do it" his *reaction* to hearing Charlie's "no" is just...we can only see about a quarter of his face but his relief is so profound as to be palpable through the screen. Extremely difficult scene and these two knocked it out of the park.

What makes it even more astonishing is that every camera angle represents AT LEAST one take. The fact they could get such a powerful, raw, cohesive story from all those performances shows these actors are already top tier at their craft. Joe said that scene took them 7 hours to film. Utterly mind blowing.

Nick's realization while talking to Tao that Charlie has been holding all of this in and hasn't even talked about it with his best friend...Kit's acting just with his eyes is so good. Both Kit and Joe in the final scene - Emmy worthy.

I don't know why, but the end left me with such a heavy feeling. Despite the safe space they have with each other in their friends group, the way Nick's smile faded to an expression of worry. Even without knowing what to come, that just left the whole season on a very different end compared to season 1.

Season Two represents all the trauma that can accompany being gay especially when you’re also trying to find out who you are as a young person. However hard these stories are to watch, I think it’s important to illustrate just how seriously dark and perilous it can be growing up queer. The song in the closing credits is so beautiful and haunting.

About Nick repeatedly clarifying that he’s “bi actually,” I think it’s all about context, and not a sign of internalized homophobia. Nick’s been happy to be called gay as an umbrella term by someone like Darcy, who he knows respects him and his identity. (His giddy smile at being included in the “meddling gays” in Season 1 was an underrated little moment for me!) But when it’s someone like David or some random classmate who clearly doesn’t care to respect his identity (or even refuses to believe it), it understandably bothers him. In the comics Charlie will jokingly call Nick gay when it’s the two of them, but explicitly affirm and defend his bisexuality when others invalidate it, just like he does on the show. On a totally different note, the last scene of the episode is so well done! I also felt like I was holding my breath the entire time. Kit gets a lot of flowers for his performance as Nick, as he should, but I think Joe has done an equally fantastic job portraying Charlie. There is so much going on beneath the surface with Charlie, all the time. He is constantly shoving down his feelings and putting on a brave face. There’s also a level of numbness to his trauma that I sense in scenes like this one, where Nick is visibly and understandably shaken, and comes out of the conversation seeming very fearful. Yet for Charlie, he’s used to living with all of this, and he leaves Nick’s seeming lighter and *happy* because he feels so loved. It’s a subtle performance and Joe’s executed it so well!

On I'm bi actually, let's not forget it's cost Nick time and effort to be in this place and Simplus as it's a recent discovery for him, he does want ppl to get it right. the show points out how much trickier coming out is for bis. Besides, I do not see ill will in this younger student. That's how the world is, not only heteromatrix but albo binary matrix.

Nick's face after he closes the door in the final scene breaks me. He was putting on a brave face for Charlie and is looking at him with sooooooo much love, but he closes the door and immediately you can see he's scared/worried. I've never seen it mentioned, but I also really like the little hitch in Charlie's breathing when he's looking at the words "I love you" on his phone. Like it's hitting him right there. I don't think he sent it, but he's for sure feeling it!

For Nick always reminding people that he’s bi and not gay, it’s not because he’s ashamed or not as comfortable with his « gay part ». It’s just really annoying when people assume you’re gay when you’re in a same sex relationship and straight when you’re with the opposite sex. I actually think he’s really brave and self-confident for always correcting people. It’s a lot easier to go with the flow and say nothing then always taking the time to remind people that bisexuality does exist and that just because they see two women or two men together, that doesn’t necessarily mean two lesbians or two gay men. Also, the acting in this episode is through the roof and above !! Especially the Tara and Darcy talk and the Nick and Charlie talk at the end, it was just so beautifully done ! I really hope Charlie keeps his promise in season 3 because his answer didn’t seem very sure and I feel like the eating disorder is going to be the main problem for their relationship in the next season..

This episode really hurt my soul. Cause I just want to hug Charlie and protect him from all pain and suffering, but I also want to hug Nick, and give him the strenght that it takes to be the love and support for a person struggling with mental health. Sometimes we forget they are only kids. They are very mature, they know how to hold a serious conversation, and communication skills are off the charts. But they are kids. They shouldn't have to deal with any of this bullshit, but it is exactly what happens with kids in schools. And the actors, god the actors, they are so fucking good at expressing the love, the pain, the suffering, the support, the need for each other. Joe and Kit deserve an award here.

charlie’s experience is very common for so many queer youth. charlie was outed, severely harassed and bullied and assaulted and abused by ben. he’s internalized all that pain, has not opened up to a single soul (until now) and has been taking it out on himself the whole time (restrictive eating/self harm). he’s been made to feel like a burden, not good enough, worthless and i just can’t believe how anyone could make someone feel this way or drive them to the point of self harm its 💔 it’s gotten out of control for him so self harm is how he copes:( i rlly wish more characters/reactors realized how much charlie was struggling and so i’m glad nick noticed! though nick is an amazing support and so is the friend group they rlly can’t do much for charlie but that. this is charlie’s fight and it will be a long journey of recovery in s3. the ending conversation between the two didn’t magically cure charlie and i’m pretty sure his “promise” to nick was not authentic at all bc that’s just not how it works w mental illnesses/disorders. charlie’s behaviors have become dysfunctional and v harmful and NEEDS professional help. he’s on a really dark and dangerous path if he doesn’t get it.
@shannancox6632

He didn't say "I promise" which I think was really telling. We've seen Charlie flat out lie to Nick several times (his history paper being done, eating several times, being ok being a secret). And you can have all the good intentions to tell someone when things get bad, but mental illness often overrides that intention.

@@shannancox6632 very true! all the hiding/lying/deflecting is a wall charlie is building to put on as a front that “he’s fine” and that “everything’s perfect” so that he can repress/avoid the real issues. he’s afraid especially because he’s so young and feels alone, a burden and helpless so he turns to harming himself and internalizing that pain instead. his wall is finally starting to crack because of nick and that probably is giving him severe anxiety and will most likely relapse/get worse so he needs professional help.

I just have to add, what broke me the most was when Charlie said, “I don’t want to feel like that anymore.” The implication is that Charlie still feels like that, and for someone to feel that way, someone who is the “kindest and most thoughtful and caring and amazing person in the whole world” (according to Nick in the corridor to Charlie), for someone to feel that way is a crime. It just breaks me when Charlie says that to Nick. I just can’t. Of course, Nick handles the entire scene beautifully, and the two actors in the entire final scene are breathtakingly brilliant. Thanks again for your beautiful reaction to the final scene and to the entire series as a whole 👊👊. Looking forward to going on the ride for Season 3!

I actually like the second season better. For me, it's one of the most relatable and realistic depicions of teenage friend group (speaking as a teenager myself). I was watching the show and I realized that I really can see my friends and myself in the characters. Most of the time when we're together everything is great, we have fun. But when shit happens and we're not good, and we have to go home (because our parents are just like Charlie's mum - there are rules even when we're 16), and the only thing that has waited for us there is our parent yelling... yeah, we lie that we have eaten when we haven't, because that's really the only thing you can control when everything is falling apart. We use humor as a defense mechanism, just like Darcy. Once I told a friend I love them (in the platonic way for everyone wondering), and guess what: They act just like Darcy. They didn't respond and covered it up with jokes because they didn't believe someone could actually love them. We are terrified of the older siblings even though it shouldn't be like that. We can't tell our parents anything because the only thing they care about are grades. We are affraid of losing our friends, because in this moment they are everything we have. Sorry for bad grammar, english is not my first language.

This last episode was a different level, these young, diverse, British acting talent, were just stunning, I hope they all get so much work off the back of the work in this show, Tobie Donovan was the most improved actor in the, ensemble. His portrayal of someone's search for answers to what must be one of the most difficult things to understand in this modern world, obsessed with, sex, romance, and relationships was simply breathtaking. It would have been so easy to over act this, but he played the part with an amazing sense of nuanced delicacy. It was believable because of how he was withdrawn further into himself. And as for Joe and Kit, at the end, they were no longer Joe and Kit they WERE Nick and Charlie, chefs kiss, footballers kiss, rugger kiss every type of kiss.

God, I WISH I had a love interest/ boyfriend as friggin sweet and caring Nick when I was 15. I really wish we had this kind of representation and depictions of characters like this when I was a teenager. I really think this show (as idealistic and "fantasy-like" as it can come across sometimes) is such an amazing thing for the young people of today. When I was a teen, the majority of queer representation was either tragic or over-sexualized, and while those depictions of experiences are valid for a lot of people (it certainly mirrored mine), it's so nice to see something different. Heartstopper definitely delves into the darker stuff, and has me all kinds of in the feels, but it still leaves me with an overall sense of "hope" for lack of a better word... It really makes me wonder if my teen years would've been different, had this show come out 15 years ago.... idk, it's hard to explain

Charlie’s in trouble. I’m worried. The connection to Nick is triggering his disease, not because of Nick, but because the boys are reaching next level of vulnerability with each other, so the stuff bubbles to the surface.

Exactly. On the one hand, this unconditional love he is experiencing from Nick is a healing balm for his soul. But then Charlie is so afraid of losing that, as well as still wondering if this is something he is even worthy of in the first place. And that constant overthinking and second-guessing add to the stress of it all.

I think you guys are the only reactors I've seen pick up on (arguably) the best thing Nick did in that last scene. And when the ED came up in ep 5, as well. When you find out someone is hurting themself, a lot of people's gut reaction is to tell them to stop, but that can do more harm than good. If Charlie promised to eat properly or never self-harm again, and then he slipped up, he would absolutely blame himself for that. I've been there; it feels like you've ruined everything, like you couldn't even do one thing right, like that person you care about should just stop wasting their time on you already. So Nick asking Charlie just to let him know if it happens again, while still stressful, is so much more helpful in the long run. As someone who's been on both sides of that conversation, it's just incredible to me how well Nick handled it.

Yes!! I have also been on both sides of that conversation, and what you said cannot be overstated. It’s not simply a matter of willpower. You can’t control it better just because someone else has a vested interest. Instead, it’s the “I’ll be here for you-you just have to let me know so I can be here for you.” Very well said.

For me, I'm guessing pan or demi for Imogen. And I absolutely love the teachers. That last scene was so emotional and so well done. I love that Nick doesn't make Charlie promise to never do it, which isn't realistic, but tells him to come to him, to let him know. Nick has become Charlie's safe space and allowed him to be vulnerable. What worried me, was the pause before Charlie said no. It feels like a hint that Charlie's at least struggling with thoughts of self harm. I think this episode is about realizing perfection doesn't exist. That perfect is a trap, a goal we can never attain, and the only true perfection is finding those people that we don't have to be perfect with. Being happy with them. Learning to love and understand ourselves surrounded by people who allow us to grow and be our messy, imperfect, beautifully flawed selves.

cw self-harm ///// Interestingly, when they have this conversation in the comic, Charlie says, “No… I mean hardly ever.” But the conversation also happens much earlier in the story, and Charlie is generally a lot more candid about his (negative) feelings with Nick. For example, in the comic Charlie tells Nick right away that he’s nervous about them being out as a couple and the attention that will bring to him. In the show this is something Nick has to infer himself, and he really has to push Charlie to open up at all. I think that’s probably more realistic, painful as it is to watch Charlie try SO hard to conceal how much he’s struggling. That context, plus Charlie’s reticence (and the ease with which he lies about stuff that’s causing him anxiety, even his coursework) on the show, PLUS the pause you mention, made me worried as well. There was also a blink and you miss it moment during Charlie’s conversation with Nick about his disordered eating at the Louvre, where the camera panned to Charlie pinching at his arm… could just be a nervous tic, or could be hinting at him still struggling with self-harm urges, even if he’s been able to stop himself from cutting. :/
@FeliciaRenya
@FeliciaRenya Жыл бұрын
@@normaladjacent *spoilers/tw for ed and self harm* yeah. I just finished the 4th book, so I'm all caught up. But as much as I love seeing people who don't have book context react, I feel like a lot of people miss the more subtle hints to the books, the character arcs, and future moments in the show. I think Charlie's mental health is a really nice tie in to that 'perfect' theme. Finding someone who loves you for all you are doesn't magically fix you. He'll still struggle and relapse, and they could both probably use some therapy. Charlie isn't cured of his mental illness, he just doesn't have to go through it alone.
@normaladjacent
@normaladjacent Жыл бұрын
@@FeliciaRenya Definitely! I love the comics, but I think the adaptation has done a better job of slowly building up Charlie’s mental health arc in the background, even beginning in season 1, where we also saw him slip into avoidant behavior and restrictive eating, and exhibit an unhealthy desperation to control the circumstances surrounding Nick’s sexuality journey and protect him. It just went mostly unnoticed by the people around him, which I think is pretty true to life. It’s been interesting to see some reactors find the ED storyline in S2 abrupt, or assume it was a late addition, when it’s been a big part of Charlie’s story since before the Heartstopper comic even existed!

I said this on Patreon to but i love the language in that scene in nicks room. "Promise me youll tell me if it ever gets that bad again" its such a strong way to go about it instead of saying "stop for me" and no one who hasnt gone through that will never fully understand the impact that the change in language can help in the healing process.

i've never seen imogen as straight tbh. the moment she got all quiet and looked like she was contemplating something and said that she thinks she gets it when nick told her about feeling out of place in season 1, i assumed we might go down into the storyline of her experiencing comphet and didnt really discover her identity bcs of said comphet and turns out to be a lesbian. the way they set it up in this season too with when she complained to elle and nick about how ben wasnt being good to her and then she went silent and didnt answer when elle asked if she even liked ben. then the weird tension between her and sahar when they played truth or dare.. yeah, im seeing the lesbian experiencing comphet and didnt realize they're a lesbian storyline here.
@normaladjacent
@normaladjacent Жыл бұрын
Yes!! I would be happy with bi (or unlabeled) Imogen too, but the lesbian with comphet theory is very compelling. The way Imogen talks about her crushes on Nick in S1 and Ben in S2 is… interesting. She and Nick hang out every morning and “look cute together,” so they’re “basically together,” and obviously they need to date. Ben is one of Imogen’s oldest friends and one of the few people she thinks likes her, so he’s a natural choice too. But like you say, when Elle asks Imogen if she actually LIKES Ben in Paris, she’s silent. Are these ill-fated but sincere crushes on boys who are too hung up on Charlie Spring to give her the time of day? Or is she just picking the most suitable boy in her proximity to pursue because that’s what she feels she SHOULD be doing? 👀

Your silence for the final scene was the greatest blessing and proper review/reaction you could possibly have given to us. For us, the fans who have watched the show over and over again, second to the therapy it offers us, is the knowledge that the community we have with Heartstopper is shared far and wide. Your reaction here is an acknowledgment of this and a sharing of heart with us. The parallels and mirroring used in this series is extraordinary. Think of how Nick and Charlie interact about his prom outfit compared to when Charlie first visits and has had a haircut. Then think on how the first episode is about Charlie proclaiming things to be perfect with Nick in the first episode and how that theme is throughout - that reality is not perfect, and yet, maybe perfect is this reality he has with Nick.

Aww you’re twinning with Charlie and Isaac! Bow tie squad 😊 Fun fact: the slow dance between Charlie and Nick wasn’t in the script. Kit and Joe blessed us with the cuteness of that scene all on their own Edit: I’m torn with that I love you at the end. On the one hand, if we had gotten to see him hit send after that emotional scene, I could’ve waited patiently for season 3 to come out so we can see Nick’s reaction, but we didn’t and I am so impatient because the first episode of season 3 is called Love. However, I read the comics and the I love you scene there is HILARIOUS and cute and I sort of really want to see it so I’m glad that we don’t see it this way this season. I’m both glad and impatient hahaha

I so look forward to your reactions. You both have such great sense of humour, timing, chemistry and charisma. This is perhaps the first time I've watched you both speechless at the same time. This season of "Heartstopper" was powerful. I cried when Charlie bravely let Ben know the damage and emotional scars he leaves behind. And as Charlie began to open a window so Nick can see the darkness and torment within, I cried uncontrollably. I know that darkness and torment well. When you are an insecure, shy kid, that is relentlessly bullied, made fun of for everything, you wish to not exist. But then someone takes interest in you and you feel hope. That hope quickly banishes when that person uses you, puts you down at every opportunity and convinces you that his controlling behaviour is actually caring.. The trauma is deep and the journey to healing is continuous. I think Charlie and Nick are about to embark on a challenging journey. In less than 12 months we will uncover the next chapter 🙂 This series is just brilliant in every possible way.

If you’ve not read the webcomic and are afraid to now, I’d recommend holding off until after Season 3 comes out. The TV show gave us a lot of extra context and more development that was outside the scope of the comic, so reading the comic now wouldn’t answer enough questions or flesh out storylines to be satisfying. And yes, we do go deeper.

I’ve said all along that the show this season just gets better with every episode, and that final scene between Charlie and Nick is remarkable in every way: writing, directing, and acting. I absolutely love Ur So Pretty by Wasia Project (as mentioned by others, the band Tao actor Will Gao formed with his sister Olivia) it's a gorgeous song. I've been listening to it on repeat and i have the score to learn on piano, I am obsessed, it's so beautiful. Olivia said she wrote the song about first love. The way I interpreted it when I first heard it was as expressing those overwhelming feelings you get after a first kiss with a crush when you're worried it might not happen again. But the way it is used in the show gives a whole other context to the song that really resonates with me. Before I continue with my Ted Talk I'd like to place a TRIGGER WARNING here for discussion of self harm, please don't read on if this would make you feel uncomfortable: The lyrics over this final scene are: "you're so pretty, when you smile it kills me, you're so lovely, when you cry it hurts me... I'm so scared that the moments we shared won't happen again, I don't want this to this to end". It's a very intense love being expressed here. So, my partner had a really massive depressive episode in 2018 and he really dropped out socially after his grandfather passed away and I really struggled to find ways to be there for him, so I let him be, gave himself space, just let him know I was there, and when he was ready he opened up to me. He told me he had been cutting himself and he had had suicidal ideations. Thankfully I was able to get him to a doctor for some help and of course it's something we're still working on together. I was so scared after all this, and whenever he was sad and I didn't hear from him, if he was out without me and not answering my calls or texts, that he had done something serious. I still feel like that now whenever he's sad, that fear never goes away and it's a process working through your trauma, so I understand where Nick's head is at in this scene. When the lyrics of the song are "I'm so scared that the moments we shared won't happen again, I don't want this to end" it's not just someone worried they've shared a kiss with someone who won't kiss them again, but in this context it's someone worried about their boyfriend maybe getting into a bad headspace, not talking to them about it, and hurting themselves in an irreversible way. We can see that on Nick's face after he closes the door, he's really worried. It's so impactful, and such a great use of the song. A beautiful, heartbreaking, human way to end what was (in my opinion) an incredible, perfect season of a TV show. Ending with Charlie's finger hovering over the send button as the final lyric of the song plays "you're the only person left so hold me, don't leave me" you just know Charlie is going to get in his head about telling Nick that he loves him and he's going to start feeling like a burden and get in his head. I think what they've tried to explore here is how trauma can taint even happy aspects of your life and give you anxiety. He keeps saying "everything is perfect", "this is the best my life has ever been" but you can see in the way Nick sees him, really sees him, that Charlie is putting on a mask, he may not even realise it, but it's there, and Nick wants Charlie to open up so he can heal. The song is just over 2 minutes long and they managed to convey all of that in the way they used it here, it's absolutely masterful. I'm not ready for season 3. I basically spent all of this season balling my eyes out (happy crying, excited crying, angry crying, worried crying, cheering crying, sad crying, loving crying etc) I am going to be a mess after next season. But I hope Charlie didn't press send because the way he says I love you for the first time in the comics is iconic. As always, loved your reaction, can't wait to see what's next, would love you to do "But I'm a Cheerleader".

I actually (😉) love how nick is so proud of his bisexuality and won’t let people push a label on him that isn’t how he identifies. Being Bi myself it really feels true to how if your in a relationship with the opposite gender people will just assume your strait or if you’re in a relationship with the same gender people will assume your gay/ lesbian which can feel really invalidating especially since it can be really hard to figure out and come to terms with being a sexuality besides gay (lesbian) or strait because of how they aren’t as represented in media you almost have to constantly reinforce and remind people you’re sexuality exists or have a label put on you that isn’t you 🤷‍♀️ it just makes me so happy to have this series and representation through him and also I love the ace rep with Isaac because of how little of that sexuality is represented in media also ALICE FUCKING ROCKS 🥹🥹

The most annoying thing about being bi or pan is that people will completely erase your bisexual label/change it, if your in a same sex relationship (“oh so you’re a lesbian/you’re gay then) AND in a “straight” presenting one too (ah so you finally choose a side, finally found the right girl/boy = your straight now”) 😤 It’s even worse when both my partner and myself are bi, cause people either ask for threesomes or accuse both of us of cheating on each other)
