hi just popping in from america to say that channels like this matter so much and will matter so much more in the coming years. the left wing media apparatus is non existent, corporations aren't even bothering with rainbow capitalism anymore, and actors/celebrities are increasingly staying silent. we need grassroots creators like this channel to keep doing the work to reach people.

Josh is honestly right to be worried about fireworks and fires. It hasn’t (and I imagine won’t) come up in the show, but in Solitaire (Tori’s novel) fireworks getting out of control and causing injuries amongst the teens is a plot point! In a couple of episodes-- the one with the bonfire (2x3) and this one -- I too *noted* the fire hazards (to myself). I live in California, where, throughout my lifetime (I'm 73), there have been annual fire seasons. And in the last few years, they have been increasingly bad. Some have been set off by a variety of 'triggers' (most being through carelessness) and in at least one recent year that I can remember, a whole town was leveled. I suspect that England is a lot wetter, and maybe the citizens are more careful about creating clearings and not tossing matches around...

I used to dread Christmas Day growing up. We had such a large family around us, with many cousins, aunts, uncles etc coming to the house. I hated the moment when they would ask if I had a girlfriend yet, and this was around 1999/2000 when things were only very very slowly getting better for LGBTQ+ people, but a lot of homophobia around when I was a teenager back then. New Year's Eve was always better, when I was with my friends.

I love the conversations around sex that this season has, particularly with Elle and Tao (but it applies to everyone in a way), because sex can be awkward and scary at that age (it can be awkward enough between adults), but that doesn't make it any less exciting and I'd imagine there could be a whole extra level to it for someone who's trans (I'm not trans and can't really speak to that from personal experience, but would assume that it could feel even more complicated and potentially confusing than it already is in general). Normalizing the conversations around those types of things is so important for young people to see (and just people in general tbh). These "kids" have had such mature and open conversations about such things (that most adults can't even really discuss tbh), and I really appreciate the care and effort that's been given to exploring such topics ❤

Agree on David and that not all characters have to be redeemed! Although I must say, as someone who grew up with a similar type of dad, I still understand him a tiny bit? Not the being an arse but just this very very sad belief in that the he will eventually show up. I relate to being so childishly optimistic, it's just so strange once you realise what's actually happening, like waking up and wondering how you didn't see it sooner. Nick has realised he won't show up (and my baby brother did faster than I did too), but until David gets to that realization himself, my guess is he'll keep being terrible and that's just quite authentic (and again, very very sad) in my eyes. Thanks for a wonderful reaction, keeping me company on a boring train ride ❤️🥰

I guess David misses his father more than Nick because he was older when their parents split up. I don't think he gets along with his mother as well as Nick does. That makes him feel left out. So he is in a sad position. But that should not be a reason for beeing a homophobic idiot.

Charlie's relatives are very ignorant about what eating disorders entail and about the kind of place where Charlie was staying. They talk about the illness as though he was in a car accident one day, got injured, went to a hospital and is now completely fixed up (back to normal as though nothing ever happened). This is so incredibly far from the truth. The stay at the eating disorder hospital was just to get him started on the road to recovery. It entails checking on his malnutrition and giving medical treatment to reverse that; finding out the root causes of his OCD + ED, and beginning to learn strategies to cope with the triggers that lead to the unhealthy behavior and thought processes. Going home does not mean he's "all fixed up"; it means that now he has to continue with therapy and learn to apply what he's learning to the greater context of being in his family and the community. He is still in recovery. He has a long way to go. And it's not a case of being "back to normal"; Normal was not what was 'back there' in the past --- he's still working on moving ahead so that his future is healthier. The relatives also talked about his hospital stay as a stay in a psychiatric facility for "crazy people." Strait jackets etc. * * * On one channel, the Reactor thought that Charlie's mom should not have even told the relatives about Charlie's medical issues, since she knew how they were and how they reacted to stuff like that. * * * My thoughts about how Charlie's parents were dealing with Charlie had to do with issues of family therapy. His dad seemed to be making an effort to talk things over with Geoff. He is the one keeping track of Charlie's meal book. He found out from Geoff that feeling stressed on Christmas was normal. And Dad told Charlie about that, so Charlie would feel less stressed. Dad even learned the special breathing techniques just in case he needed to do them along with Charlie. His mom was under a lot of stress herself because the relatives were from her side of the family and they were ignorant and judgmental. She was making an effort but she has not been taught strategies that would really be helpful for Charlie. Some therapists have the parents come in for sessions so they can learn what things add to stress and which things can reduce the stress. (As you can recall, Nick's aunt emphasized that Nick should avoid the conversations about food or weight.) Unfortunately, Charlie's mom had not been taught that in sessions with the therapist, so her immediate reaction to Charlie's stress was to push more food at him and to talk about his not eating everything on his plate. Charlie had even asked her not to push food at him. And when she did it anyway, he told her that was not helping. If she had been educated about these issues, she would not have kept at it. And since there was no respite in sight, it was reasonable for Charlie to extricate himself from all the triggers. (Remember that the triggers were what could lead him to self-harm. He was actually protecting himself from that) So leaving to go to a place where he felt safe, such as Nick's house with welcoming, unjudgmental people was a healthy thing to do. [Yes, Nick's jerk of a brother was there, but we saw that if Nick left the brother alone to sulk about the absentee father, the brother's ignorant rants could be avoided.] * * * Yes, it was tragic that Tori was left alone to fend against the relatives. But the solution to that was not an easy one. It is easy for us to say -- Charlie should take her along. But Charlie was already weighed down with all the strategies he was trying to use to keep from falling more ill and more self-destructive. It would have been helpful if Tori just went to Nick's place on her own --- and eventually she did. The problem with tagging along with Charlie was that Tori did not really know Nick's extended family, so Nick would have to take care of both Charlie and Tori at the same time. That would be difficult for everyone. BUT it did work out when Tori went to Nick's house later on. Charlie had had a chance to fit in, in the safer environment and get emotional sustenance from Nick, first. It would have been nice if Tori felt she did not have to wait all afternoon before joining them. It would have been helpful if she and Charlie made an agreement that he would go over first and then in, say, an hour Tori could join him there. Charlie could have been able to explain the situation to Nick before she got there, so Nick could be emotionally/socially prepared for her visit. Although Charlie can communicate with both Tori and Nick, under normal circumstances -- at the point when he was getting ready to bail on his own house, he could barely explain his thoughts beyond one sentence. And the thoughts were all centered on protecting himself, which is what he is supposed to do while recovering. Until later in the day, the best Charlie was able to do was apologize to Tori, acknowledging that she, in fact, treated him as other than mentally ill. * * * I noticed that on New Year's Eve, the 'do-over' day, Charlie, Tori, and Nick socialized much more easily and it seemed as though Charlie and Tori had reconciled and were on better terms.

Yeah, you can see the generational emotional/mental illness cycle now really clearly, especially if you’ve had personal/professional experiences. As an asthmatic, every time I see a pug dog my chest starts hurting in sympathy for trying to suck air through that extremely constricted nasal passage. Like trying to suck air from underwater through a straw. Per Elle’s story, another Thank Universe for Alice Osman and Heartstopper. The world needed this show so badly. I found out recently Alice, the author of the Solitaire/Heartstopper universe also was on set every day and consulted on things like all the details in the bedrooms, the clothes, the mannerisms of the characters. (No Kit Connor, you cannot sometimes say ‘hello’ to Charlie to change things up). So I think the missing gravy is very intentional and you’re supposed to notice.
@slm_766Күн бұрын
Turns out, after Kit commented about wanting to change things up by saying 'hello' but being rebuffed --- in season 3, Nick says "Hello" a couple of times, and Charlie says it back once. The context is a little different, though. The usual "Hi-hi" (or occasional "hey-hey") was used as an affectionate greeting after they had not seen each other for a while (whole days or longer). The breathy Hi-Hi exchange (after the first few times they used it) became a sort of stand-in for an unspoken "I love you." So it made absolute sense to insist on keeping the Hi-Hi. But Nick said "Hello" in 3x1 when he went to sit by Charlie at the beach (when he noticed Charlie was having trouble eating). I'm not sure which episode the other happened; I'm thinking it happened during Charlie's birthday party (3x6). Nick was sitting off by himself in a chair drinking what looked like orange soda. Charlie (who seemed a bit drunk) sidled over to him, sat on his lap, and kissed him. Then they said "Hello-hello". If it was there, Alice likely approved it, though.
