HeartSupport - Music to Improve Your Mindset

Therapist analyzes the lyrics of Lateralus by Tool to discuss how "spiraling out" can actually be a good thing. When we spiral out of our comfort zone we can explore, and expand! Tool allows us to reframe the spiral.

The crazy thing about the spiral is how often it appears in nature and the universe. From a shell to the galaxy, everything is connected and always spiraling out. Its like the flower of life. It's present in so much of our lives.

yea. mostly following the spiral in wich the fibonachy sequence can be depicted. it's for practical reasons. with plants and shells. it's about leaves not overlapping too much and about an effective way of building a structure. in galaxiees, I suppose, it's physics. like fractals, it's one of those things that make you feel like you can see the basic priciples of our universe. I love shit like this. I can't bring myself to believe in any creation deity, but basic patterns that can be found throughout the whole universe, that seem to be the core of what is.... hell yea. that shit makes me feel connected to space time itself.

Thats why i deny Atheism and any non-belief in God. In my opinion, all these divine ratios and geometries that appear everywhere in nature are 100% proof of God, the Creator of everything. They ARE His fingerprints. His blueprints to life. We all have our own individual fingerprints and identities, but yet, we all have those exact ratios in our human form too. We were created in HIS image. We are literally Gods creation. Not some random bullshit of soup that came together from nothingness.

A controlled spiral can be an amazing feeling. Stunt driving and race drivers do it all the time. There's something exhilarating about knowing your car's tires are losing they're grip on the road but if you let it happen you can drift and still be in control and accomplish things most people are afraid to try.

I think it's important in Lateralus (as an album), especially, that it's viewed as a whole story. The album is a story not just the song. So there's context for the song that makes sense for the song as an individual but it's not whole until you're considering where it is in the story told in the album. For me, Lateralus is a love story.

Overthinking and over-analyzing is all too common for me, and maybe not so ironically, it makes me spiral IN. Which I think, is not good. It makes me close off, disassociate, and draw up conclusions and worst-case-scenarios in my mind before things even happen. This song reminds me to spiral out, not in, and embrace the moment and the random. It's not always easy to do... most of the people watching these videos especially on this channel probably know this already. We've all been through some shit... TOOL is very introspective. I think this song provides the perfect contrast to that, and is one of the reasons it stands out from their others.

I love how silly you can be but in the next second, serious and insightful. I truly wish you were my therapist. My psych appointments literally last 10 minutes and this is how every visit goes: “how you doing”, “ok I guess besides a lot of anxiety and trouble sleeping” “ok well I’ll increase youre klonpin and that should give you relief” “ok” “alright, good to see you have a good one and I’ll see you in 3 months”

thank you friend. I'm sorry that's your experience at your psych appointment. Unfortunately that's the experience many people have. My encouragement would be to try to find a therapist AND a psychiatrist. Many people don't know this but psychiatrists primarily prescribe medicine, whereas therapists can actually help you process. We also have a peer mentorship program if you're interested :) Sending love!

@@HeartSupport thank you for that advice. See, I always imagined psychiatrists where you go in, lay on a couch, pour out you’re soul and they help you work through you’re issues. When I came back from Afganistan, I was NUTS but I’m doing a lot better now as far as the fear, depression, and paranoia but I’m doing much better now. Just not quite where I wanna be. I’m a single dad with custody of my daughters and they bring me a lot of joy so I’m doing a lot better but I will definitely seek out a good therapist. Thank you

She’s not in it for the music, just the lyrics so she can overthink and over analyze.

Also love the Fibonacci sequence with this song. Brings in so much more into their music then anyone else.

The spiral from the Fibonacci Sequence, which is used in this song, grows consistently and eternally. It is not a random spiraling that is out of control, but a perfect and intentional spiral that never stops growing. So grow, with purpose and intent. Don’t just go flailing around and see what happens.

Embracing whatever may come works for being human. It also works for the music specifically. I've seen more than a few people quite bothered by their inability to somehow force Tool's music to conform to the way they want to bob their heads. It's when we truly embrace it that Tool's most complex, and convoluted songs reveal their greatest beauty.
