Interesting personal experience and observation: Relating to this song: When my second husband and I were happily married, we actually lost friends. However, when I was going through a terrible first marriage, I had way more “friends”. I just couldn’t believe that these so called friends couldn’t be happy for us and maybe come away with a positive outlook that perhaps they would find happiness as well. I lost my husband to cancer. I lost him way too soon. But I’m grateful that I got to have the short 11 years that we had. I learned so much from him. ❤❤

This might be wrong, but maybe you lost friends because you two were happy... Happy to be with each other all the time. Happy to do everything together. You lost friends because you, in a sense, didn't need them... Your husband filled the role that certain friends filled, individually. As I see it, that made him all the more spectacular of a person... and for that, I'm extremely sorry for your loss. 😔 ✌️♥️🤘

If you look at the definition of living vicariously through another it will make so much more sense It's not separation from. It's just more of participating without feeling the consequences. Living vicariously through another comes in many forms The commentary on our obsession with suffering is quite a modern problem. Not new to us. But amplified now. People often live vicariously through their children. With expectations and grooming into a career or education.

I like your breakdown. I would just add to what you said about the pain making us separate ourselves from others. The opposite of that instead would be feeling empathy or sadness with them. It should hurt us to see others suffering if we’re empathetic and in reality that it could also BE us in that same situation. It comes from the dark parts of us or maybe otherwise refers to one’s ego which is just that a “self” identity. Consciousness is universal. We are all connected expressions living personal experiences. Tool is very powerful music and deeply profound. He’s definitely influenced a lot from psychedelics. Most of the artworks for Tool are made by Alex Grey. It gets deeply spiritual into that idea of oneness and collective consciousness

He actually explained this during the Salival tour (if you will). The difference in hate and anger. Destructive and constructive behaviors. Anger is constructive because instead of fighting someone, he’s gonna create a song and sing his anger out. Hate would have him doing physical damage to himself and others. It’s also why he doesn’t scream much anymore. When he does, it’s extremely selective and has major purpose. What good does it do someone to continue to scream about the same things over and over? There is no growth. I digress. Your reaction video had me in tears. Thank you for that. The more people begin to hear the depth of Tool, the more free we become… I know that sounds weird, but some of us cannot afford therapy lol. Tool is exactly that. @HeartSupportАй бұрын
From adv_mat: @UnsoberIdiot Thank you for opening up, Your feelings are deeply honest and it takes a lot of courage to say out loud something complex about yourself like this. Life in general is pretty strange tasks of balancing between humility and needed confidence. You are not alone where it comes to trying the find the good approach to these extremes. I sometimes struggle with impostor syndrom cause some people around are much brighter then me in some subjects. It feels like i am pretty dumb comparing to them, but then i feel that this is ok. There is something so human in recognizing our limitations and strengths. There is so much of that human in how you are recognizing both your strengths and limitations. You are aware of this struggle, you are feeling this right now being between these two extremes, which is messy but being part of this world. That awareness speaks alone a lot about your understanding and self reflection. It is completely ok to feel small and recognize what we don't like in ourselves , - but this is a great strength. Many people truly believe in their being above everyone else, without such reflection and the truth is - they are not, or even could have their own challenges and being ignorant. I have sometimes this feeling when i talk with someone that is pretty sure they know what they are talking about, and i know they have no clue - bo for whatever reason they think they know better.( you got it for sure :D ) ... It usually ends that they are not getting smarter, and their ideas don't work well. I am just saying that " stupid people don't know they are stupid" and what you talk about is really a value of self-reflection. Despite you describing yourself in harsh way, you are humble person that wants to be better and openly say what like or not particular in self. It’s a sign of growth, an acknowledgment that you’re evolving and striving. And there’s something truly beautiful in that journey. I am sure that you know best what is there for you, you know what you need and what person you want to be - that is beautiful and having this , you are half way there :) I am rooting for you and i am sure at some point of that journey you will love yourself for person you are :heart: Matt

This album came out 18 years ago, and this song is more relevant now than it was back then. Swing on the spiral and still be a human... Yeahhh I made an animatic with this as the soundtrack. Mentors said remove the music but... that kinda missed the point.. its on my channel titled A Knight Reborn - Video Game Concept / Animatic

The song is about the nature of humanity. We feed the algorithm. We feed by tuning in to what the media is showing us. And it's inate. We are an animal that has always fed on tragedy. Overtaking each other. Fighting for the land. Money. Power. Etc...

Hell yeah, the grudge is a good one too...also, stay away from the videos, they have nothing to do with the song and only distract from the lyrics
@danielshaffer60679 ай бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I think their videos are intrinsic to the lyrics and the meaning of the song as a whole. The visuals alone are like poetry. I'm a visual artist myself, though. So I tend to look at visual art as poetry.

You'll hear this a lot. Don't watch the official videos when listening to Tool at first glance. It's distracting. I love Adam's artistic creativity, but it does draw away from the music and lyrics. Circle back to it later. Edit: I never took it to be that harm happening to others makes us feel better, but that we're relieved that it didn't happen to *us*. But there is a sense of the Coliseum, right? Watching people fight for their lives. That basement level of entertainment? Tool is very deep.

Wasn’t following at the beginning but you really took this in an interesting direction, good analysis, I think those things that ‘deserve’ to be destroyed are precisely those tendencies that are driving the divide between us deeper and isolating us from our own sense of being humane and caring because it can be scary and painful

Always reminds me of that one Calvin and Hobbes strip, where their house gets burglarized and they're talking about that, how you always feel like that kind of staff happens to someone else, and one of them said "You're always someone else to someone else."

you should listen to tracks by Opeth on the double album Damnation/Deliverance. the whole record is about depression and is brutally honest and sincere. damnation sounds beautiful and clean, but is about the absolute depths of depression and how hopeless everything feels. deliverance is very heavy and dark sounding, but its about developing coping mechanisms and doing the hard work internally to overcome these hopeless feelings. may i recommend Hope Leaves on Damnation and the eponymous track of its counterpart: Deliverance. but really any of the songs will do wonderfully

It was hard for me to concentrate on the lyrics of this song and the musical instrumentations and instead my eyes were just mesmerized by the visual conceptions of the music video. Absolutely amazing and gorgeous video and major kudos to whoever created this visual work of art.

They’re my favorite band and I’m happy when new people discover their music. Love your insights and analysis. If you’re taking recommendations you should react to a song from their first album called Prison Sex. It’s incredible dark and goes into the cyclical nature of SA.

Loved it. I will definitely say with Tool, the music video has its own meaning alongside some parallels with the lyrics but not always. Adam Jones, the guitarist usually has done the videos. From what I remember from an old interview, it's that he wants the music video to go alongside the music but not necessarily lyrically. It's why it all seems abstract when trying to tie it to Maynard's lyrics.

I wouldn’t say you can’t vicariously experience positive things happen to other people and feel good about it. I love those videos where people go buy like $1000 of food and feed the homeless or they help small businesses or help someone accomplish some goal they’ve been working towards. It definitely works more than one way. Also Danny’s tom work in this song sends me. Especially in the crescendo at the end around “credulous at best”

I want to bring up the concept of compersion (uncountable) 1. The feeling of joy one has experiencing another's joy, such as in witnessing a toddler's joy and feeling joy in response. 2. The feeling of joy associated with seeing a loved one love another; contrasted with jealousy. According to Wikipedia this was coined in reference as a romantic opposite to jealousy. However I have been using it as a non-romantic sense and to remind myself I CAN experience joy from another's joy and to actively look for it.
