Absolutely, in terms of Maynard's relationship with his mother and Christianity. I would include "Talk, Talk" with that list of songs. Anyone who doesn't cry to "10,000 Days/Wings for Marie" either isn't listening or doesn't have a soul. The love and anguish on those two songs is just so heavy.

If you really want to understand Maynard James Keenan you need to react to some of his more personal songs. It will break your heart, but you should absolutely react to first to Judith, by another of Maynard's projects A Perfect Circle and then Wings for Marie / 10,000 Days by Tool (if that's too long, just 10,000 days). There is context you'll need for both (like that Judith is Maynard's mom), but the growth demonstrated between the two songs that are separated by both time and tragedy showcase two very different ways of dealing with a personal grief that is very relatable to a lot of people.

The Judith journey. Jimmie, then A Perfect Circle's Judith. Next.. The Patient With A Perfect Circle's Orestes following that. Finish with Wings for Marie and 10,000 days. They all give insight to MJK's mental growth in dealing with his mothers faith, sickness and ultimate passing. All four are amazing songs by themselves. Once connected they are life changing.

And I love how you pick up on a deeper, more introspective level of the band than most people/reactors. She just put into words what I've been trying to express to people after everyone in my adoptive family passed away. I lost my mom, my dad, and my brother all in a span of 3 years, to either old age or cancer. I lived an abused life growing up, and it wasn't until I lost them that I realized how much I had been sinking. Losing them was me learning to swim, as Tool put it, and as the therapist repeated. Losing my mom, my dad, and then my brother was the worst outcome, and yet it all had a cleansing effect on me. They were my family, and I miss them dearly, but they were also very abusive and the only one I cried for was my dad. Since they've been gone, I've felt like I'm truly alive.

I left everything and started a journey that was super hard but helped me step through my shadow and learn to swim in a world i barely knew. It was extremely hard for me because i had to recognize the trauma i caused them and know i wasn't entirely a victim. My relationship mirrored my parents...imagine that! It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this song, when he gets to the " 'Cause I'm praying for rain.." part, that's when the tears start to flow for me...there's just something so unconsciously emotional in this song for me, all of the tension and anger and rage is just released in this cathartic tidal wave of joy and acceptance as this horrific disaster is about to happen and wipe everything out...like he's standing on the beach completely overtaken by relief, awe, and happiness as a tsunami wave is about to engulf him and the city, because he knows that in this tragedy there will come new life, and the hope that with a clean slate we as humans will treat each other better in the literal wake of this catastrophic flood...
@AJvsEverythingАй бұрын
I'm just now realizing that the reason I'm so emotional during that part is that depressive part of me that wishes something meaningful and poetic would wipe me out...like, I'm not suicidal, but there's always that negative part of you telling you what a failure and a fuck-up you are and how you'd be better off dead...and that part of the song just somehow speaks directly to that part of me, and the tears are like the acknowledgement inside my brain of "Yes! That's what I want! Please take me!"...music is fucked up how it can pull so many emotions and reactions out of us...

Tool's lyrics often operate on multiple levels at once. They're also often very funny in a subtle way that's easy to miss. The Jungian stuff is certainly there, but the song is also highly topical. California had experienced a few very major earthquakes in the years prior to this album and the Bill Hicks bit was derived from a very real fear among a portion of CA residents that the Big One was imminent and that the state was about to the totally destroyed. The album was also written shortly after several high profile drug deaths in Hollywood, the LA riots following the beating of Rodney King, the OJ Simpson trial. The LA smog was still bad, worries about acid rain and ozone were high. We were post-Reagan and and pre-Silcon Valley. As a lifelong Californian, this song is very true to my childhood.

It's been talked about for ages- the end - but now, mankind has the technological ability to destroy itself. It's going to happen, it's only a matter of when, and we've made large progress on this front. It is not simply a progressive evolution, but a compounding evolution. We are self destructing, and I believe that's what we deserve.

There's also a commentary (on the surface level) discussing the fact that LA is filled with superficial people with superficial concerns that don't reflect the reality that the rest of us live in, which I could see being a thing for Maynard, as he strikes me as someone who is very artistic and even a bit on the introverted side of the personality archetypes. Not only does it have both meanings, but it also speaks to the frustration, pain and even anger that resides in our lives, especially when times are tough or you're struggling with something such as depression or some other major life-altering issue. That cry "Flsuh it all all away" can be the metaphorical cry of the damned making a plea to the heavens that said person finds some measure of relief, and the animosity towards that is sometimes present in the life of a victim, as our social structures do leave many people feeling disenfranchised, powerless and feeling cut off and alone...
