Heartwarming Bond - Gorilla Tonda and Kajari's Interactions

More from Awali's troop at the Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon in France. The troop opposite Lope. The brothers squabble in the corner and then by the window. An important part of their development into adulthood. When Tonda lets off, Kajari gets up and throws dirt towards Awali, the silverback who subsequently charges through the room. A little later, the brothers are on a merry-go-round going round and round the fake tree, while Awali is watching his food being prepared. The Mangabey is doing his acrobatics above on the rope. Down below, one of the blackbacks stood in "something," so he's cleaning it with some wood wool. After a short while, Kajari tries to take Tonda's arm, but Tonda pulls away. Kajari lies down, and Tonda lies next to him. Kajari gets back up, biting Tonda's hand. Kajari turns around, picks up a piece of paper, and Tonda beats his chest. They start to wrestle, the little Mangabey monkey running up to and hiding behind Silverback Awali.

Yes I think they got quite a bond. It nice that they got each other. Shame Lope and Shufai couldn't be like this, but at least Aybo is the next best thing.

SV…do you know how long on average a silverback stays in a bachelor group before moving on? My zoo only has a bachelor group and 2 of them have been there for at least 10 years. The other 2 finally got to move on and start families last year. Just wondering if it was different over there. ♥️

Oh it is very difficult to say. I would say 5 years at least and then anything after that, depending if there is a suitable match or not. It might be that they never be able to move because of family history and the bloodline.

To: @sherryw1466 - It is considerably more difficult with chimpanzees since there is also the purety of the gene pool to maintain. There are four sub-species and many of the residents in zoos are already hybrids.
