Heat or eat: Many forced to ration food and heating amid surging energy prices

It really is a case of heating - or eating - for many low income households faced with soaring energy bills set to take up more than half of their income.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
That's according to new research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which is calling for families to get emergency payments.
The government argues that increases in the living wage and universal credit will help.
We have talked to people queuing in freezing temperatures outside a food bank - and others who say they're already having to ration what they spend.

This makes me grateful to live in rural town in tropical country. Warm weather year round, plentiful and cheap foods, and even if our wage is low, we live surrounded by close relatives who are willing to help at anything. I still remember my uncle regularly sent baby diapers when i had my first daughter, and my cousin (a farmer) regularly gives us excess rice and beans for free. In return, i will occasionally help him in his farm during my days off at work. We may look poor from first world perspective, but we are not lacking anything

I lived in UK for 8 years, I worked for the NHS. When I met my husband, I told him quality of life is way better in my country than in UK and I want us to move there. He didn't believe me at first as UK is a developed country whilst Malaysia is a developing country, so in his head how can Malaysia be better? After living and working in Malaysia for nearly 20 years, he tells me every time that he is grateful that I made him move to Malaysia.

People at the managerial level turned and betrayed their own by abusing employees rights and lowering income and working hours. Back in the 2000s people can work even in the retail sector and still pay their mortgage and at the same time look after their children comfortably today they are on universal credit and Brexit adding to the woes. I was shocked last year when I saw decent people, not drug addicts queuing for a plate of food. For a rich country, this is a shame.

I come from a working household and I’m certainly struggling, I dread to think what April will be like. I’m in despair. Even supermarkets made huge profits. Universal credit does not even cover the costs of basic living, leaving people in terrible desperate situations as well as circumstances. Kindly do not say the government dos not have the money to help people like us, because they do. Also many who are on the bread line who are looking for work, find that the employers can pick and choose in a way that is unfair. I am finding most prefer younger people than someone who is 35-40+ like myself. It can be very upsetting as well as degrading.

Finding 40 hours of work per week is not hard....yes 40 hours is 5 8 hour days that may be 2 or 3 part-time jobs or possibly/eventually be 1 full time. If you apply for work with a defeated beaten look on your face and the wrong attitude no one will hire you.... of course, the next sentence that comes out of the mouth of some unemployed is generally ....I won't be any better off working than claiming benefits, what a looser attitude/statement that is the assumption is that your situation will never improve and that you will not earn more money in years to come and move up the ladder rung by rung. And please remember that Governments have no money they only have the money given to them by hard-working taxpayers...yes someone had to get up at some ungodly hour and go to work to earn the money so they can pay tax so the unemployed can complain about not getting enough benefits. And food banks if you give away free food the word will soon spread and of course, their use will increase... the more you give people for free the more they will come to rely on handouts, expect more, and value the handout less.

Back in 1998 I was living in Phoenix, right on the border of Scottsdale. One Saturday, a neighbor in my apartment complex asked if I could take her and 2 of her friends to a local food bank run by a church as they didn't have a car and couldn't afford a taxi. Of course I agreed and drove them about 3 miles to the church. As they were waiting in line, I couldn't help but notice at least 12 people there sipping on their Starbucks coffees, and I was there with my 99 cent refill from Circle K. As my neighbors moved up thee line, one of the workers handed me a box and said to get in line. I politely declined, telling him I just brought some neighbors that didn't have transportation. He insisted, saying they had plenty and really was insistent that I took a box and filled it with food. I asked him "Do I look like I am going hungry?" while patting my Dunlap. He laughed and said, please take some and give it to someone who you know that could use it, so I did and I remarked about all the people that had their damn Starbucks coffee cups and me with my 99 cent refill. He just sighed and said he agreed. Also there were a LOT of newer expensive cars in the lot. So, I took what they gave me and thanked them and threw a $20.00 bill in the donations jar and went home and took a few things I could use and gave the rest to a friend who was in dire need for her kids. Fast forward to today. I am retired and consider myself VERY fortunate to have "income adjusted rent", all utilities included except inner web and I qualify for several programs to help with Medicare, prescriptions and co pays. I used my stimulus money to purchase tires and other repair parts for my car and dropped a few hundred to a local food pantry for non food items, such as toothpaste, mouthwash, soap and basic sanitary items. I also found smoking deals at my local Wally world for winter boots, knit caps, gloves and hand warmers which I dropped off. They were so happy to get these things and I try to buy extra food stuffs on sale monthly. I told them I don't have a lot, but a lot of people have LESS. I do this because I want to , NOT because I have to. they always make sure that I get a holiday basket which I use to prepare holiday meals for my fellow seniors that can't cook or go out. Things are about to get a LOT worse if Daddy Vlad invades Ukraine and as soon as we levy MORE sanctions on Daddy Vlad, he will simply CUT OFF OIL AND GAS TO EUROPE and they will lick his boots and make US out to be the bad guy. Sigh.

There is indeed no practical advise here in the UK, all I have ever gotten has been the sort of "advise" one might give to a two year old - "keep your doors closed", "go to friends and family to stay warm" (not much use if one doesn't have friends or family), "have you checked that you are claiming all the welfare benefits you are entitled to" (none if you have no children and you work). Treating people as if they were r e t @ r d e d is the norm here, but no real help or advise.

@@LittleKitty22 yes unfortunately so true People that are fortunate enough not to need the welfare system ever like to judge those that do and never look at the inefficient systems in place that are in place to keep people locked into a cycle they can't escape and prosper. There really should be a wheening period in place once your pay increases you have at least a few months before your assistance decreases so you are able to save a little and not be dependent on welfare while working longer hours and having less resources. It's set up so you either decide to reject any advancement/raise so you can keep the benefits you need to survive or you take the opportunity and the system drops your assistance immediately and the same struggle ensues Apologies for the long rant just got in my feelings, though I've been blessed recently the struggle continues. I'm wishing you many blessings from America Edit: this was not my personal struggle, though I have had my own. @Mandy Ellis Late response I know, but the elderly should be the ones who get benefit handouts. They are no longer of the age to adequately work and providing they have paid into the system they should be rewarded free money back to them. Personally I’m against benefits to the youth. Arguably I’d let properly disabled individuals (cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, amputees, blind, etc) keep their benefits. Then I’d also have a system in place where if you don’t have a job you get out on a form of JSA for a fixed period of time. Perhaps 6-12 months. However within this time period it’d be mandatory to learn new skills (money management) and participate in volunteer work with the social, health and environmental sectors. There shouldn’t be options for people to take benefits indefinitely. Unless of course people with money themselves wish to pay for them with their own money. Just my two cents. Wasn’t asked for, but I thought I’d say it anyway.

Well done on all those volunteers and donators and communities who organise those food banks. As humans we are connected and it's a sense of mutual service and morality that allows us to coexist . Morality has certain components , key ones being empathy and fairness. In a rampant capitalist society especially where corruption, greed and selfishness are the norm , the fundametal traits of empathy and fairness disintegrade rapidly and socia-economic classes are progressively divided. This video shows the outcomes of such societies.

In the 90s when I was a teenager in South Africa I thought the UK was well off, and highly developed and a strong economy as a part of the EU single market. As well as having a generally progressive and forward thinking government with an emphasis on universal health care, and a safety net for the working class. As well as eliminating poverty. Not to mention a country proudly and fiercely independent from the US politically (as in neither facist nor simply a US vassal state), and in terms of foreign policy (the UK was smart enough to not get involved in the embarrassment that was the Vietnam war for one example). My how times have changed.....The UK looks and seems unrecognizable now to me. It seems more and more like America every day. Especially in regards to socioeconomic inequality, and a government that doesn't care. The UK pretty much just seems like an American vassal state now. Copying every bad trend and political idea from the US domestically, and constantly siding with the US on every issue even when the US is obviously wrong internationally. As well as signing up for almost every bullshit war the US now conducts. Funny how the UK government....like the US government....can always find money for bombs and wars but not for fixing it's domestic problems. Really sad what the UK has become.....

It's capitalism , all capitalism countries are doomed to eventually collapse with age. It's now aged and every thing we do no longer works. Get ready to collapse like the great Arab country's that came before us, yes that's right back hundreds of years ago they functioned just like us. Merchants always want more so they put their prices up, others match them and it has a chain effect down the line. The problem is you can keep increasing but if the buyers can't keep up they stop but the merchant can't lower your their prices without a lost. The only way to drop the cost is to go to the root aka the first chain of merchants and lower his/her prices which has a roll on affect. Governments have done this in the past and it's called war. To be fair the first signs was our parents, many was in debt but prices was still in the affordable stage but no longer the case. It's time we change and no longer depend on company's for bill X and generate it ourselves at little cost. No need for jobs but instead the need for trade off skills. A new community that helps each other out. Example a group of people work on generating electric, a group for working farms, a group for clothing , a group for doctors. It's communism and it can work , people have finally proven this with the tiny home movement. The need for more more more has ended. Once universal income becomes a thing it begins, the cost everything so we can live better life's. You will own nothing and be happy.

This government are not concerned with people who don't vote for them in the first place. Only if enough core Tory voters kick up enough of a fuss will the government even *start* to consider how to help ordinary people. And even then it's only Tory Donors who have the ear of government - well this government, at any rate. You can be sure that any help offered is the absolute minimum that they can get away with paying or subsidising. For Tories, it is the party of the rich, by the rich, for the rich - only they have duped an awful lot of ordinary people into voting for them with promises which somehow never get fulfilled. If you were to ask the likes of Denise Coffey how you were supposed to pay your bills, she would either say that the government is doing all it can (which of course it isn't, never has and never will) but she would suggest that you just put in for some overtime, or look for a further part-time job. She would also suggest that you merely need to make some economies and to cut back on you hitherto lavish lifestyle. She would of course *assume* that your lifestyle is too lavish - after all, why else would anyone have problems in meeting bills? The very concept that many wages are too low is entirely outside of her frame of reference, just as it is for almost all Tory MPs.

@@HungryMonkey1880 Your comment is not supported by any rational economic analysis. There is long-term and systemic poverty in parts of the UK which could easily be rectified by taxing multinational companies the proper amount of tax which they *should* be paying under current UK law of taxation. Companies such as GlaxoSmithKlein, Microsoft and Apple currently only pay a fraction of what they should be paying in tax. They have powerful lobby groups and Tory MPs are not above accepting 'donations' to ensure that the shareholders of these powerful and immensely rich companies only pay a token amount in tax.

To be deprived of the bare necesities by crooked governments, big corporations, and greedy utility companies is a criminal offence, and these perpetrators should be treated like war criminals and taken to trial. One of the major failings of Parliament I think is they seem to consider the welfare of foreign countries and people well before our own. There should be no need for 2000 foodbanks, nor any need for adults and children to go without. I would argue that the more people we import, the less there is in the benefit system to provide a decent amount to live on for uk citizens. The Government would argue that the benefit system is sufficient, but if it lived up to its name there would be no signs of poverty anywhere. Disguise it and ignore it as much as they like, the problem is very real and now at unprecedented levels. My arguement is that if people have a decent amount of money to live on whilst being unemployed they are more likely to be able to maintain their health, appearance and mental health to make a quick turn around back into work. If people cannot even afford the basics, wellbeing quickly deteriorates making future employment an impossibility. Both Benefits and pensions need to substanitiatly increase to eradicate poverty.

The true standard of a good leader is not how he treats the ones at the top, but how he or she treats those at the bottom. 🙃

Some helpful advice I hope. If you have a condensing boiler that has a temperature gauge, turn the central heating control down to between 50 - 60 degrees. This will heat your home but save on efficiency and a little money. Turn off or to low radiators in rooms you are not using. Also, if your boiler allows, turn the hot water control down to around 50 - 60 degrees. LED lightbulbs save money in the long term too. Buy in bulk if you can from trade outlets like Screwfix, it will be cheaper than buying individual ones from regular shops. For Seniors, if you are physically capable, go out every day for at least a couple of hours - window shopping, a walk in the park, get a cheap coffee in a cafe, stay as long as you can and chat with the staff. ( Don’t go to the expensive rip-off ones). That will save on heating your home and improve mental health. Claim EVERY benefit you can, you have earned it, or others have and want you to be comfortable. There is no shame in claiming what you are entitled to. And please don’t be scared by reports of Energy costing the average person £3000 plus, that is the price cap that regulates the unit cost. You will only pay for what you use. The TV News announcements are deliberately scare mongering and irresponsible! I have done all these things, and it helps.

Sad to see. So many poor decisions over many years has led to this. Can't help but think of the wealth transfer from Europe to Asia.
