Heat Shield noise fix on Toyota Prius

noise coming from underneath the car found out it was a loose heat shield ... made two holes and used parking brake line bracket to hold up the heat shield away from the exhaustpipe whoch made the noise go away

I’m so happy this video existed, for a moment I thought my header bolts were coming loose or something expensive happing in the engine bay. The noise in the camera doesn’t compare to how loud this is in person.

@1:10 - To anyone with a similar problem; Avoid anchoring parts of the exhaust to any of the wiring in your car. The movement/heat from the exhaust will wear down the insulation around the wires which can become a safety hazard later on, depending which wire you're anchoring the exhaust to(not to mention the financial cost to diagnose/repair/replace whatever parts that wire connects to and/or the wiring itself). Just tie it to the bolt it was originally anchored to or any other anchor point, but please don't anchor it to the wiring(especially the wiring of a hybrid), it will only cause more problems down the road.

Thank you! I have this problem after bottoming out my Prius 2011 on some sandy seasonal roads. The bolt broke on the exhaust heat shield and there is now a loud metallic rattle when the gasoline engine is running.

I used a large washer and some epoxy putty and stuck it back up there. It has stayed for a year now.

Just fixed same problem on my Prius. The problem is that the shield around the bolt corrodes and slips over the bolt. You will have to raise the back of the car on ramps to get at the shield bolts. Remove the 10 MM bolt(s) (not easy) and under the bolt put a washer big enough to cover beyond the corrosion. Its hard to do because the exhaust pipe is in the way and you don't want to remove that! I unbolted the whole heat shield and cross bar so I could rotate the heat shield enough to get at the bolt. It took about 3 hours but I probably saved a bundle by not taking it to a garage.

this was very helpful... not sure the ultimate solution is a tie up, but it'll work until someone can get in there and replace the bolt that holds it in place. Good fix. Thanks for good video.

I used a strong magnet. It is still holding after a year. On another one I made large washers from aluminum pop cans.

Just discovered this issue on my 2014 prius c. Rattling for a week, thought it was coming from front right wheel area but when growing through drive (wall echo) noticed it might be more back. I'll have to lift it up and maybe put a washer over the bolt, probably rusted hole broke off.

Thanks for this. My 2014 Prius just started making the same noise yesterday, which I immediately assumed was the heat shield, and looking underneath I can see one end resting on the exhaust pipe like the beginning of the video, so that is certainly what it is. Does anyone know the size of the bolt and/or washer? I assume the bolt is probably still there and the hole simple rusted through and may only need a bigger washer, but would like be prepared before I crawl under the car. 🙂. Or perhaps I could “make” a washer with a thin but durable piece of rubber. 🤔

@@EmmeryCheung In my case, the heat shield was rusted through, and the bolts were also heavily rusted and not moving, but there was really nothing to tighten it to anyway since there were big corroded holes where the washers were. Only workaround if I could get the bolts out would have been to make oversized washers, but that may have only been temporary too. I ended up going to an independent shop and they put it up on the lift a put a couple other screws into the body and that solved the problem, for a nominal cost. I traded the car this summer for a 2023 Prius Prime. 😎. Good luck!
