Nice! Short, sweet, accurate, and super helpful. Just what I needed to address several spots on my little ex-racer bugeye Sprite. Twenty years ago a family member who'd been doing comercial body work for decades explained the very same approach but seeing it made it real for me. THANKS!

Hey I just wanted to drop in and say THANK YOU! I have a 69 Camaro coupe that had,key word had, stretched outward metal on the rear OEM tail panel dead center. I used what I had , a serrated body hammer instead of the shrinking dolly. It worked. It is 98% straight and I just need to take the bumper off to get it perfect. Thanks again for the video.

Glad that worked for you, sad to say but the new owner pays no attention to all these videos I made. Michele and I sold MTF in August of 2020 and started a business called Patriot Classic 4x4. We are on Facebook and doing video's on 66-77 Bronco's.

I watched a guy do this from the opposite side. I tried and made a large bulge.I stopped the oil canning easy enough/I only heated one dime size spot/3 times? Thanks for this video. Please people/be careful how you express your thoughts. A door skin is a feeling less object. Damage it or repair it or crush it, Damaging a person is much easier Takes zero skill or thought and Is MUCH HARDER to repair!

Great video. Seems like a PDR shrinking tip(like the VIP) would get that right up. no heat required.

This method is decades before PDR came along.

@@RS-gh2mf why would we desire to use techniques developed 80 years ago when modern methods are better?
@RS-gh2mf2 жыл бұрын
@allenwilson6585 very simple, I can do the repair myself rather than hire some meathead to do it for me. Just like I can do metal finishing without bodyfiller.

Drop the "p" and dent removal has been around longer than automobiles. Have you ever seen a suit of armor. That's some serious metal finish with a hammer. Over 1000 years old.

what happens when you cant get to the backside of the dent? Thanks for the video i learned something today that should help this DIY guy

Im wondering how is this with stainless? Made a fan shroud , did a few tacs on braces & got a lot of warppage 🙄

Not going to work with Stainless Steel.

Curious if this will work on a bug roof that was dented in with an axe (intentionally). If I knock out or push out the majority of the caved in metal, could I then shrink it to smooth out the metal some?
@RS-gh2mf3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but it will take more time considering how large it is. Michele and I sold MTF last August and started a new company called Patriot Classic 4x4, we're doing 66-77 Bronco's. I will be doing video's on them.
@marknoble54953 жыл бұрын
If you are going to have to wipe it anyway, why not just use a PDR rod?
@RS-gh2mf3 жыл бұрын
First of most guys aren't trained in Paintless Dent repair, plus that usually works good for small dents which I do. Heat shrinking works better for larger areas.
@phoenixblack12205 жыл бұрын
I never was all that great at this technique. I just weld studs and pull from the front
@hotrodmtf4 жыл бұрын
It just take a little practice. Stud gun on this type of stretched metal would make it worse.

@@hotrodmtf - Yes I was looking at this video because I have a 70s Challenger that someone oil canned the top of the fender.

You can always pull out the dent , its the stretched metal / tin can effect dent pins wont fix .
@BillySBC6 ай бұрын
Cute couple. Always better off getting the metal straight, don't like body filler at all, would much rather build up with primer than use body filler, but you can only do that if your metal is nearly straight.

No offense man, but you have a helper and easy access to a panel. So it really isn't a hard dent to remove.
@RS-gh2mf2 жыл бұрын
I don't get your point 😕 If the dent is to far away, you will need a second hand. If the dent is in an area where you can reach it by yourself, then you don't need a second had. Been using this technique for the last 50 years.
@mccartneypaintandcustom96022 жыл бұрын
The moment you hear the loud pinging from hammer on-dolly you are stretching…not the correct process. Even though the original dent appears flat where the torch was used, the space behind the ends of the ruler while checking progress indicates the dent is now an outward bulge. A donut dolly would have been a good alternative for eliminating the dent without damaging the paint finish
@RS-gh2mf2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like another arm chair bodyman that's doesn't know what he's talking about 🤣
@mccartneypaintandcustom96022 жыл бұрын
@@RS-gh2mf No need to go into personal attacks, just trying to help you out. 4:42 shows a gap at the end of the ruler. This isn’t possible unless you have an outward bulge, which means the panel is still stretched. Hammer on-dolly and a pinging noise is a good indicator that stretching is occurring. Last I checked you don’t fix a stretched panel with more stretch. Hammering the heated area flat should stop as soon as you hear that first ping. You’re welcome.
