AEB-L Heat treatment in a propane Forge with cryo treat using dry ice and kerosene.
Showing tempering process,
also how to keep it straight. How to keep your propane tank from freezing. How to prevent scale on your knife. How to make a basic cryo treat setup from buckets and insulation. Using a k-type thermocouple for the forge, and using a food thermometer in the toaster oven with tin foil. Also how to control the temperature in the forge using air controls. Parks 50 is the quinch oil.

Never put dry ice in a container mixed with water especially a glass bottle with a metal screw lid it goes off like a b omb , ended up in a&e with two others getting stitched up, one lad ended up going to theatre to stop the bleeding .

Use Brine next time and Allow it to quench in solution for at least 45 seconds to a minute , you did it for 5 to 10 seconds , and Use liquid nitrogen to cryo treat for 48+ hours You will have a superior Product then what you have done in the video

Thanks for the demonstration Aaron, very informative. I have two questions. First of all, how flammable is the kerosene? Could a spark near by your work area set it off? My career was in the natural gas industry and I am very aware of sources of ignition near flammable stuff and this raises a few alarms in my mind. Second question, I am just preparing to start using stainless steel and have not realized that you actually quench the knives twice, I understood that a pre heat at about 1500 degrees then ramping as quickly as possible up to around 2000 degrees, soak for a while and then followed by a quench to be what’s recommended. Have I miss understood that process or do folks use both heat processes.

Well in this video I was heat treating stainless in a propane forge which is not easy to do. Equalizing at 1500° just means you’re preheating the steel, trying to build a proper microstructure giving everything time to get into solution. That is impossible to do with the equipment I was using. Maybe if I had aluminum plates at that time and stainless steel wrap in an oxygen free environment I could have put the blades in right away. I was just using clay to keep from losing carbon from decarbonization of stainless steel trying to prevent scale. I quenched it twice to maybe and like I said it’s experimental trap some of the microstructure in solution at 1500° because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to give it a proper soak time you can’t hold a Forge at 2000° accurately my k type thermal couple only goes to 2000 the temperature becomes very volatile. I found this way gives me the best results in a propane Forge. Parks 50 seems to work very well for it. Far as Kerosene to answer your first question I’m not sure with the flashpoint is but I know it’s a lot less than acetone and thats what I was using. I’ve heard of some people using alcohol but kerosene is pretty much diesel fuel family of flashpoint and it’s fairly safe it’s a petroleum not a solvent. It doesn’t get as cold as acetone but I feel like using kerosene is the safer option if you have any other advice let me know

@@AaronJohnson1979 Thanks Aaron, since asking the question I have been reading online about kerosene and see that it is no where near as flammable as gasoline and if it does light will not flash and flare up as gasoline would. Once you have finished your treatment how long will it take for the dry ice to evaporate and allow you to get it back into a sealed container?
