Thanks Matt for the valuable advice. I have been using Starbond thin for a while which is really penetrating, the scales i produce will always have imperfections and that cures 99% of my problems when i grind down.

Hi Matt thanks for your time and effort. Water jet cutting I've got the same issue on 14C28N and 5160 cutting at a angle got no answer what's creating it. However Lazer cutting is perfect for both materials. Confused...

Matt have you actually had breaking problems with magnacut? The evidence seems to be mounting that a) magnacut retains toughnessup through HRC 65 and B) edge retention is much better at 63+ than at 61. Hogue learned this. Do you prefer lower HRC because of workability or are you really seeing broken blades. Any edge will chip if dropped hard enough.

On your MagnaCut heatreatment do you put anything in the foil package to remove the O2? I have been using small pieces of wood to burn up the O2 but was think of not using anything. Also do you keep the patina on your knives from the treatment?

I do not use anything in the packet and I surface grind after heat treat to remove the decarb

Once I used paper and I sealed the package so tightly that I ended up with a puffed up package and a heavily oxidize blade 😂 Too much maybe? 😂

30 min soak at 1900. Plate quench. 350 temper. Gets me between 59-60 rc. 👊👊

Is a cryo bath not needed with Magna cut?

It’s not needed but Is recommended . It will bump the hardness up about 1 point it looks like.

That magnacut knife looks decarburised. You should stress relief it in a vacuum furnace
