This was the game that officially solidified the Bucs-Panthers rivalry. We have to remember that, not two years earlier, both teams were in different divisions (Tampa in the NFC Central and Carolina in the NFC West). In 2002, when the league realigned, the Bucs won the Super Bowl, but their primary division rival that year was Atlanta with Michael Vick's electric play. Then in Week 2 of 2003, the Panthers shock the Bucs in their home opener after the Bucs missed an extra point at the end of regulation that would've won the game. Flash forward eight weeks later and we get this gem of a game, and the two teams have hated each other ever since.

Those 2 games were the definition of the 2003 season. First a block PAT and OT loss, then giving up a TD on a drive that took less than 1min. Yeah, also that IND comeback loss. That sunk a team that could have been relevant for a few years pretty fast.

Chaos Films definitely, it worked out in the end though. Brees would probably be a average quarterback with the dolphins or Vikings at this point.
cortezmauricio56 I’m just saying Vikings because Brees wouldn’t be as loyal to Miami as he is to New Orleans, and since the Vikings have had qb trouble and reportedly offered Brees a huge contract in 2018 offseason that Brees declined why not. It’s fun to think about.

You have to be kidding me.. Aaron Brooks by this time was already a much better and established quarterback than Delhomme was and it wasn't even close. Brooks had a playoff win under his belt in just his second season against the white hot Rams and 2003 was Brook's best season as a starter with a 24/8 TD/INT. Meanwhile Jake while becoming a decent quarterback had a 19/16 season. The workload came from the defense and the running game of which Stephen Davis had 1400 yards so to say it was a mistake for the Saints is a definite lie.

Panthers were a scary team to play. I knew if Tampa was going to get a victory, they had to have a great offensive game plan helped out with many lucky breaks and the Panthers offense had to throw 2+ Interceptions, several big mistakes(not blocking a pass rusher for an easy sack, possible big runs ruined by running backs tripping over their own players receivers dropping easy deep balls, receivers running wrong routes. ,and multiple fumbles. When the Panthers offense and defense were playing at their best, tampa bay need to be flawless and many miracles

Well Tampa’s current title defense is already going much better than their first one. It just goes to show that even back in the early 2000s, sustaining a team built on a great defense from year to year was nigh impossible. Same thing happened to the 2000 Ravens. Soon after this teams learned and started building great offenses which are easier to carry over. The two major exceptions are the Legion of Boom for Seattle and Denver’s defense in 2015. But those eras were very short. It’s just difficult to maintain that historic intensity on the defensive side of the ball for more than a year or two. That the Bucs did it since the late 90s up to this point in 2003 was very impressive.
