I think it’s pretty clear from Rory’s opinion on KDB and VVD that he suffers from nostalgia. There’s nothing wrong with thinking that vvd is below Rio or Terry or some of the others he named, there’s nothing wrong with having KDB below Gerrard or Lampard or some of the others named, but being so adamant that they aren’t even in the conversation with those names is where he shows his bias towards those older guys. Ofc they are comparable to these guys. I’m not sure how someone can believe the peak of the prem was so much higher 10-20 years ago when these guys were in their primes, that arguably the two consistently best players over the last 7 years in the prem (a period that has seen incredibly high points tallies) can be not comparable to the guys of the past

I’m a Burnley fan so I really have no bearing in the conversation. But Van Djik is so underrated, he really is on a level with Terry & Rio and better than Vidic. He got so close to winning a balón d’or in an era of Messi & Ronaldo, and there’s not been a premier league centre back anywhere near that. I don’t watch Liverpool every week as I didn’t Chelsea 04/05, but part of me feels he gets so much grief is because of Klopps style of play. That Chelsea era never scored as many as this Liverpool era, but this Liverpool era have never conceded less (aside from their 18-19 season, which is better than Chelsea 03-04, 06-07, 07-08 and the same as 06-07). It’s also time to stop talking about longevity. Van Djik has now played more premier league games than Vidic, and is only about 30 away from the amount Kompany played. He’s also played about 80 more than Carvalho who (rightly, I think he’s immensely underrated for his peak) gets brought up in these conversations.

If we choose individual awards, then Vidic has 2 POTYS, Van Djik has 1 POTY & 1 2nd place Balón D’Or finish (2nd place FIFA men’s best player too but these are basically the same award) & 1 UEFA best player award, Rio and John Terry have none (?). The eye test is so subjective so I don’t think it’s a fair metric, but I think Van Djik is better than the others (but as I’ve said, I don’t watch Liverpool every week, nor did I Terry, Rio or Vidic). Longevity I’ve mentioned in my original comment, but I would be interested in any other criteria that people feel Van Djik isn’t better than one of the three, or at least doesn’t come close to the three.

Before watching this I knew Adam would say VVD, the man is an absolute clown. You can't rate Vidic over VVD if you have watched them both play. Vidic got done for pace regularly, I remember watching Bellamy make a fool of him several times. VVD gets dribbled past about once a season across 6 or 7 years (just take that in for a second) and it gets clipped up on social media and he's called finished. You can be quality and over rated at the same time. They're not mutually exclusive. I think he's rated fairly for what it's worth. There's a reason there's not been concrete interest in him from any top top side for the duration of his contract at Spurs. He can go missing for large parts of the season and unless he's scoring goals, his overall contribution is pretty average, bordering on poor defensively, he hasn't got the intensity to play in a Pep or Klopp side for example.

Adam and Rory's take on VVD is absolutely horrendous. He has been an outstanding centre back in the league for about half a decade now, playing in a far more competitive landscape than Terry, Sol, or Rio ever did. None of them ever came up against a City side that average 90-100 points over 6 years. Technically, he's a better passer than all of them, he's as strong as any of the so called legends. He's quicker than a lot of them, mainly Terry. If you actually compare their attributes, VVD stands head and shoulders alongside the greats. It's just nonsensical to suggest he's not in that category.

It's not that they don't see Van Dijk's qualities. It's just fans of other Big Six clubs doesn't want to give credit to a Liverpool player cause they are historic rivals so they tryna downplay Van Dijks quality. Also, they don't like the fact that Van Dijk AS AN INDIVIDUAL CENTERBACK is way better than all their historically good centerbacks such as Rio, Vidic, Terry, Kompany, Campbell and these guys. Van Dijk can do everything what those guys could do but those guys couldn't do all the things that Van Dijk can do, and that's a fact. Van Dijk is faster than those lot, better on the ball, at least as strong and good in the air and reads the game better. I think the biggest issue with the term "Overrated" especially in Football, is that it all depends on who you're listening to. If you're taking into account the opinions of the fans of those clubs specifically, then yeah they're going to be more biased towards them. A Liverpool fan is more likely to think Van Dijk was better than John Terry or Vidic etc... Where as a Chelsea or United fan would more likely think differently, so in a way, any top player in the league could easily be considered "Overrated" by that metric. Same if you were doing underrated players and took most opposition fans opinions into account

Yeah...that's not a good argument at all. It's a team sport, and winning the league is about having a team of good players with a solid spine. Liverpool never had such luxury, unfortunately for Gerrard to win the league. The closest he had was the 08-09 season, but while the team's spine was good that season...the squad was nowhere near good enough. 13-14 was a freak; no one expected Liverpool to mount a serious title charge, and they ultimately came short by conceding 51 goals and not one mistake by Gerrard.
