This has inspired me to build a diesel heater into a roof top cargo carrier for my car. I've had the idea for a couple of years and have been buying odds and ends I think I need to do it, but it's just getting started is the hard part for me. The concept was for heat in the car for winter car camping, or heating an ice fishing tent, or maybe the garage. But I really like the heater hose in a big inflatable suit, might be easier than setting up an ice fishing tent. It got down to -36C last week for me and I got a warning about a possible rolling black out due to the cold increasing power demand on the utilities, so I need to look into alternate ways to heat the home in case of emergencies
@loweredexpectations49279 ай бұрын
Hey.... I'm totally with you on the "hard to get started" thing.... I have that happen to me all the time. I can always come up with a better or different way, or some issue that I'm unsure of how I will deal with it. This suit doesn't heat your hands, feet or face very well... though you could customize or have one made that worked better for that. I think I would choose the tent idea, as that way you can recirculate the air. The suit uses the air to stay inflated, so you have to force air in and can't suck it out.... It has no problem staying warm at -20 ish.... but at -30 all of a soulden you are on setting 10 instead of setting 1 or 2. If you could make something that was portable between your roof carrier and hour house / garage, that would be great.
@lemonherb19 ай бұрын
@@loweredexpectations4927 I would be running a hose from the roof carrier to the window of the car where I'd probably have some kind of panel to allow for in input and output hose. In the garage, I'd just let it run in the garage. Not sure how I'd deal with the exhaust though. The garage is attached, so I could run the heated hose into the basement. Either that, or I could try to run a separate unit on the outside like yours. My basement isn't finished, but there is a duct for a future bathroom fan. I could run the heated hose from the diesel heater into the house through there, and maybe a power line as well so I could keep the battery inside or use a 12V power supply. I don't know how I'd recirculate if I did it this way though
@loweredexpectations49279 ай бұрын
@@lemonherb1 It can sometimes be the "small details" that turn out not to be small at all. I was considering running my heater in my basement with the exhaust out my hot water tank vent ... Can you do an experiment to try and design a way to make a diesel heater use less fuel by way of an injection system of some sort.
@loweredexpectations492710 ай бұрын
Technically you could do something like this... but it is much harder than it may first seem. The biggest issue is the extremely small volume of fuel that these burn. On a larger heater this would be pretty easy to control, and this sort of how torpedo heaters work. These heaters take 1000 pulses of the pump to burn 22ml of diesel. That is about two tablespoons. When you break it down, the level of precision that you would need to control flow would be pretty crazy ... This is precisely why they use what they call a "dosing" pump. So while it could be done, it would mean running a high pressure pump, an very small and accurate injector with a much more sophisticated control system. In the end diesel has X amount of energy per litre and these heaters are already VERY good at getting that energy out. The best thing you can do for efficiency, is to put a heat exchanger on the exhaust and scavenge all of your lost heat. I will be experimenting with this soon.
@werner.x10 ай бұрын
Don't underestimate the amount of power, the pump would consume. You want to be able to run such a heater off the power grid, i assume
@loweredexpectations492710 ай бұрын
@@werner.x Yes... I have been toying with the idea of a 50W aquarium pump for air atomization and the SNA nozzle that I used last year. A high pressure pump will consume too much power, especially in the cold.

I suppose the next logical step would be to see if it's possible to package the heater, a battery, and a fuel tank into some sort of hard shell backpack. I'm also thinking that some kind of hot air fed hood arrangement might be beneficial. M3 make cheap disposable air fed respirator hoods with an integrated face visor for use in spray paint booths. I'm thinking one of those could be easily modified for this role. If the inside of the visor is in a hot air flow it PROBBABLY wouldn't steam up and freeze (well, possibly not TOO fast anyway).......... Though it could hinder any on route snacking. :D
@loweredexpectations49279 ай бұрын
I love the idea... The original idea I had discussed with patreon members was to build a backpack version.... The hot exhaust is the main issue with having it near a baggy suit... You need it shielded and the gasses directed away at all times. Still want to do it.
@Reman19759 ай бұрын
@@loweredexpectations4927 That's just made me think what you REALLY should be doing is running the exhaust through a water to air intercooler, sewing a significant amount of 6ish mm id surgical bungee hose all over a set of overalls and plumbed to a couple of water manifolds, putting this outfit on under your cold weather gear, then pumping the hot water around the hoses. I'm not sure how you could regulate the temperature though. Maybe having a split loop running to something like an old car heater matrix out in the cold, then you could adjust how much water goes through that to lose heat or bypasses it to remain hot? This is just sounding stupid now. I'm just trying to guesstimate how much hose that would need for decent coverage, how much water that much hose, an intercooler, and a heater matrix would hold, and how much that amount of water would weigh......... How strong are your legs? 🤣
@loweredexpectations49279 ай бұрын
@@Reman1975 LOL... I was talking about this with friends a few weeks ago (not in such detail) and when they started making fun of me I told them I should just do hot water IV drip 🤣. I bought 16 feet of stainless exhaust and have some tests planned for what will and won't work... pushing the limits of cooling the exhaust in different ways.

Hmmmm ... I suppose this would be possible. You would either have to make sure that each line was the same length and the heaters were at the same height, or one heater wouldn't get enough fuel. Been following you since you started. I've been using straight diesel, however, what ratio of diesel to used oil or vegetable oil have you found where it runs fine but doesn't get cruddy that requires cleaning all the time? Thanks for your videos!
@loweredexpectations492710 ай бұрын
I personally have not found a ratio that works. The least I have tried is 30% waste to 70% diesel. I have heard all sorts of claims that this works, but I have never had success. from talking to a LOT of smart people, heavy oils (less refined oils / non fuel oil) is always going to leave ash behind. If you burn 5-10% it is possible that some of this ash will remain airborne and exit the exhaust, but I have my doubts.
@Shakey3110 ай бұрын
@@loweredexpectations4927 thanks a lot. I'll keep it straight until you find the magic mixture 👍
@werner.x10 ай бұрын
@@Shakey31 Better so. Your heater otherwise will fail whenever you need it most. But you know, if you can have a real chimney of some sort, you can easily build a waste oil burner of a design with easily removable bottom pan, where the gassification happens and the crud builds up. Clean that pan every morning, put it back in and you'll have free heat for the whole day - as long as your waste oil lasts.
@tcmtech751510 ай бұрын
There is no magic ratio. I work with used oils of all types and have been burning them for years and they are varied in design it's impossible to say what is good or not. Some oils are thick and heavy but high purity and burn quite clean, while others are not and burn badly no matter what you do to them. Same with thin ones. Some hydraulic and transmission fluids burn like clean fuel on their own, but others have additives of who knows what type that makes for all sorts of strange sooting and clogging problems.
