Great series! I have one question... from the videos, it seems there is still a small height difference between the ditra heat installed on the support foam for the drain and the ditra heat on top of the sloped Kerdi pan. Is this correct? If so, how did you account for that difference in height when tiling the shower and the linear drain??

The way Steve maintained a consistent pattern over the tileable drain is very cool.

why put another layer of membrane on the floor? is it really neaded on top of the heat mat?

How did you pitch the floor towards the drain? I didn't catch that in this video.

How come you don’t put the Kerdi corner on first then overlap the kerdi membrane on top of the corner for better water proofing?

Best series right here! This is exactly what I want to do with my master bathroom. I was wondering if the heating system could cause a failure of the thinset over time because of the expanding and contracting when the thermostat turns the system on and off.

Hey love your work! Why do you zig zag the heat sensor cable?
@MolsonB5 жыл бұрын
The Schluter-KERDI completely over the DITRA-HEAT, is that just an extra layer of protection, or are you using it to raise heights? I've seen people just add KERDI-BAND to the seams of DITRA-HEAT but not cover it completely with Schluter-KERDI.
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
extra waterproofing layer for the shower, it’s a minimal height increase. We don’t use it for the main floor, only Kerdi-Band like you describe
@bigr92194 жыл бұрын
Is it required over the cable? Or can the seams be taped at the pan, then have the heat sheets put down and tile over it?

It looks like the drain cover was about an inch short on each side of the shower opening, but the tile covering it went all the way to the wall. That is a great look! Will this let water that runs down along the edge of the wall drain into the drain?

This was all done in one day? I assumed you would have to tile the day after laying the membrane and Kerdi band and corners?

Why did you use two heat wires? Why not just one long wire that covers the bathroom floor AND the shower floor?
@traviswright57184 жыл бұрын
One for the shower and one for the main bathroom, just in case the shower one doesn't work in the future. Extra insurance.
@hereticxxx93175 жыл бұрын
Looks good but that needs a roll on membrane. Schluter is not water proof.
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
incorrect, the orange membrane is waterproof and seams can be sealed with thin-set and thin-set mortar
@hereticxxx93175 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRepairTutor afraid not, highly water resistant yes. Water easily wicks through the thinset, a topical over the system stops that from happening. I didnt want to hear that either being ive installed at least 30 schluter showers myself. Did my own tests knowing it would hold up, to my surprise it wicked water quite quickly. I still use kerdi but now use a roll on over it.
@HomeRepairTutor5 жыл бұрын
we’ve never had that issue and can’t substantiate anything different. Unfortunately there is a lot of unwarranted skepticism and we don’t subscribe to that. Plus we can’t recommend liquid membranes over Schluter because it voids the warranty.
@hereticxxx93175 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRepairTutor have you ever taken apart a shower youve built? If not how do you know. While I get your position on the warranty, id rather know 100% my showers water proof and not rely on a manufacturers warranty to cover damage to a customers house, from a system I encouraged them to use. Don't get me wrong, your channel is one of the best out there for quality content and proper info. Doesnt change the fact it does wick water even if you follow all their guidelines. Also kerdi coll can be used as a roll on membrane, but really should be used to install kerdi ban. Kinda like using 8+9 to do the ban work.

Can roll on membrane (e.g. Aquadefense ) be applied on top of the ditra heat once heat wire is thinseted in?

@@HomeRepairTutorJeff I’m one of your platinum members, please help me understand how putting the linear drain at the entrance of the shower still doesn’t cause water to run into the main bathroom floor? Does the drain really catch all of the water runoff?
@HomeRepairTutor2 ай бұрын
@ it should in theory, this is one of the risky parts of a linear drain. Frankly, I like point drains more than linear drains because they’re more cost effective, easier to install, and don’t have maintenance issues
