@@mylesgarcia4625 She was originally cast by Fox studio''s Darryl Zanuck in "The King and I" but Richard Rogers reportedly said, "No pirate queen is going to play my Anna." Also, I read that Yul Brynner thought, even though Maureen's voice would not have to be dubbed; she tended to dominate a scene; so there you have it. How much of that is true, I don''t know - it sounds plausible.

Not to my knowledge Jeanette. I know she went to the opera frequently. She owned an apartment in NYC for years and frequently attended the Metropolitan Opera there. Her older sister, Peggy, (Sister Margaret Mary) won a scholarship to LaScala when she was 14, but chose the religious life instead. So it was Peggy who was the opera singer (as well as her mother).

According to her autobiography, because she had come to Hollywood with Charles Laughton to play Esmeralda opposite his Quasimodo in "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame", she became typecast as a non-singing actress. Actor Dana Andrews suffered the same fate. He was a classically trained opera singer who was so known for non-singing roles that nobody thought he could sing. In fact, his one small duet in "State Fair" is dubbed.
@billfisher92383 жыл бұрын
lovely voice! odd that she never made a movie musical.
@Jubiejones3 жыл бұрын
That is because her studios, Fox and Universal relegated her to the more"decorative" roles in male driven films. It was John Ford who borrowed her for "How Green Was My Valley", "Rio Grande" and "The Quiet Man" that gave her the opportunity to act. Darryl Zanuck, head of Fox did, however, cast her initially in "The King and I" but reportedly Richard Rodgers said, "No pirate queen is going to play my Anna." She even sent him tape recordings of her singing. Instead he cast Deborah Kerr and had her voice dubbed. I think, however, that Maureen, being such a dominance in just about every scene might indeed have minimized the King's presence in a scene. The movie was a big box office hit, and that's the way it played out. The Studio Days had their little idiosyncrasies and this was just one of them.

Maureen was considered for Anna in the King and I film but Richard Rogers nixed it because of her earlier swash buckling roles as a pirate wench. Same opinion when she was considered to play the Mother Abbess for Sound of Music.

Oh really? O'Hara was considered for the Mother Abbess role in SOM? But still, she would've been TOO beautiful to be a nun! I think that's why they passed her over again for Peggy Wood.

The video clip you are seeing is very fuzzy. I obtained a clip from the Andy Williams organization "Moon River Theater" (which has a better image quality) as editor of Maureen O'Hara Magazine, Maureen's official website. The exact date of the show I don't know, but it was in the late 1950s and 60s, I believe. If you check out my extension page on Facebook "Maureen O'Hara Magazine" there are many videos I have acquired as an archivist for the past 25 years. P.S. I just checked some old email and see my correspondence with the Manager of the Moon River Theater began in 2005; the clips they sent me were selected by Andy himself.

Rodgers didn't have total casting approval over the KING & I movie the way he did over the two films he and Hammerstein personally produced: OKLAHOMA! and SOUTH PACIFIC. I recall reading that Maureen O'Hara was supposed to do THE KING & I at the opening of Lincoln Center, but took a film instead. Opera's Rise Stevens did the part instead. Ms. O'Hara's voice is also heard to advantage in the attractive Sammy Fain-Paul Francis Webster score to her ill-fated 1960 musical CHRISTINE, which was recorded and is out on cd.
@dianavictoriaaljadeff53026 жыл бұрын
Yes Rodgers could give his opinion in their musical castings and he didnt accept Maureen whio was a singer and cojld be brilliant in the role..Yes frbn.Finaly Rodgers surrendered and she was called to do The King and I in thr Lincoln Center revival but made a movie instead.Maureen wasnt considered for the Mother Abbess.They wanted irene Dunne,Deanna Durbin and Jeanette mc Donald but Peggy Wood was chosen.
@mylesgarcia46256 жыл бұрын
Well, Rodgers didn't have TOTAL casting approval either for SOUTH PACIFIC. In the new book on R&H2, it is told that Doris Day refused to sing for Joshua Logan @ a party @ Rosalind Russell's home; so he picked Mitzi Gaynor instead. Shirley Jones was picked by both the RHO's casting director at the time Jones appeared in New York, AND Oscar Hammerstein as well. And Jones had to undergo camera tests as well, especially for the new Todd-AO cameras that were going to be used in OKLAHOMA!!

Donald Marhefka No Donald. The first Anna Gertrude Lawrence was 52 when she made the musical and Maureen was only 36 when the movie was made. She and Deborah Kerr had nearley the same age. Yes in this tv performance she was 40years. She was born in 1921 and now she is 93.
@mylesgarcia46256 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? When they were going to make THE KING AND I film, Darryl Zanuck, head of Fox studios, first offered Maureen O'Hara as the film's Mrs. Anna because O'Hara was on contract to Fox and Zanuck knew his star had a beautiful, NATURAL singing voice which Kerr did not. But Richard Rodgers balked somehow at O'Hara's casting and, I guess, with Yul Brynner's input, preferred a true Brit, Deborah Ker,r, instead. So what is all this "age" business are you taking about? It HAD NOTHING to do with the actresses' real biological age! For God's sakes, Mary Martin was nearly 45 when she played an 18-year old Maria von Trapp on stage!
@mylesgarcia46256 жыл бұрын
I think O'Hara would've been too competitive with Yul Brynner (who might have had some input in the casting of Mrs. Anna). Deborah Kerr played a softer, more feminine, MORE BRITISH Anna than Maureen might initially give the impression of. I can't see a similar chemistry between Brynner and O'Hara.
