Totally agree with Chris about splitting the check. I once had a guy ask me out and he waited til the end of the meal (the bill was like 24 dollars) to tell me he wanted to split the check. I was so annoyed- i never spoke to him again. I dont mind splitting the bill if we are in a relationship but on a first date, i absolutely expect the guy to pick up the check if he is the one that asked me out. I understand some people have strong feelings about gender roles but i think the majority of men who pull that crap are just cheap. Also a first date shouldnt be expensive anyway. If youre just meeting someone, coffee or a cocktail is perfect. I think the safest way the approach this - whoever suggested the date pays. And down the line if you keep dating that person maybe you take turns treating eachother. I understand wanting to be clear about expectations from the start but i also feel like its a turn off to be concerned about money and who pays what on a first date.
