Lifestyle it is. BUTT--that's an older wood stove shown. Wood stoves are space heaters not heating a closed alcove. And, where is it written that homes need to be at 72 F constantly ? We heat with 2 EPA wood stoves set out in rooms where we get the heat. Some mornings here in Downeast Maine it may be in the 50's F indoors after all night damped fires in winter, but the stoves stoked bring it up to comfort with an hour or so. Your figures can be way off depending on the structure, weather, snowfall ( it insulates), sun effect, etc... JMNHO

Actually the stove shown in the video was less than year old at the time we filmed, but I agree, lifestyle and preference dictate everything. One can be happy in a house at 66F while another likes it at 75F.

Thanks for the info. Just started this year heating with wood. Had an electric bill of 560.00 for one month last year. Never again.

I just opened my electricity bill this afternoon, $620.... now I’m really considering getting set up with a wood stove in the house. It’s been on my mind for a couple years

Mike, I went on budget billing after that high bill. With running the wood stove I have a $600 credit. I’ve got right at &2,000 invested in a new stove and glue liner. At this rate it will pay for itself in a few years.

I have an outside wood furnace which is much cheaper to operate than electric but I cut my own firewood. You can't beat wood heat

I have electric, oil, and wood. I absolutely cant stand oil but it has its purpose. When talking about electric its a huge factor whether or not its baseboard or a heatpump. Heat pumps are far more efficient at heating depending on the type of heat pump. The awesome thing about electric is that it can be paired with solar. Which I have. In the colder months I fire up the stove and have oil to run when the stove isn't on. It's always better to have more ways to heat then less. Even though some may be worse or more costly to run.

Thanks for a good informative easy to understand video. I am in my 30th winter heating my home with wood and an electric furnace. And have been retired 12 years. There are many days the house is heated(1500 square feet)with an Eden pure heater running 24-7 in the middle of the house. And an electric fireplace in a den in the back of the house maybe 3 hours average on those days. Also some mornings the furnace is turned on for maybe a half an hour to bring temperature up a bit. Then the heaters for the rest of the day. This is due to the stove just gets the place too warm if temps are between 34-44 degrees. And even opening windows is not an option. And we seem to be getting a lot of these types of temps. To use stove on days that morning is low 20s and highs mid 30s and cloudy. A fire in the stove with 6-10 pieces of wood will keep the house mid 70s until late evening. Anyway sorry about writing a book. I can now with your info sorta figure out where the electric is being used. Thanks again for GREAT info.

nice to see some of those metrics in focus, such as the 20% rh = 6500-7500 btu per log, and the 20-40 btu per sq2. thank you!

Having to wait until the house is cold enough to use the wood stove is a good thing, lol. They are powerful heaters. Thanks for watching.

I installed a beautiful Hearthstone Soap Stone Wood Stove when we built our some home 34 yrs. ago and loved it, but as the home owner covenants required a wood shingle roof as the roof aged and dried out I became afraid of a chimney fire and burning down my home and a neighbors so I quit using it. I loved it but it was work, loading it, lighting it, keeping it going and burning my hands working with it. I replaced it with a beautiful Jotul Direct Vent Cast Iron Gas Log Stove and have never looked back. So simple and clean and I think less expensive that buying wood. No electricity required so if the power goes out we can still heat our home. And the stove looks just like a wood stove because it originally was, just converted to gas.

Great video. Thank you. My wife and I are new to wood stoves. We just built a new house and have a Lopi Rockport wood stove set up like you in a large stone fireplace opening. We will use it mostly on weekends when we are able to tend to it. Our main source is propane. My question is....if we are only going to use it maybe 10 times per month in the winter from about late November through early March here in middle Tennessee, can we get away with a chimney cleaning once per year? Reason of course since chimney cleaning can cost around 200.00. Thanks for your feedback.

Know the type of wood you are burning and its moisture content. Every setup is different, ie flu liner, chimney height, how tight a house is, etc. This all affects draw and thus creosote buildup. I can only answer for the stoves that I use and that answer would be yes. I would have mine cleaned before use and then again in the spring.

Interesting talk about resistance heating, are they still being sold or has everyone switched to heat pumps which cost half as much to run?

@@alexburnette2526 I have a wood stove as well as minisplit ac units, the mini splits are heatpumps but without any duct work and they'll produce heat down to about 5 degrees outside, while also being 18 seer efficiency and you don't lose 25-30 percent of your heating or cooling through duct work. We use those to keep the house at 58-60 degrees overnight or when we are at work. They don't use a lot of power to do it, then when we are home or evenings we'll fire up the wood stove. Keeps the power bill pretty low, plus my solar offsets a good bit of the power use too.

In your estimation what is the best wood burning stove on the market...I live in Saskatchewan Canada and we are in a deep freeze right now (-49 wind chill value) I've looked at a few stoves from a couple fireplace/stove stores and then see a Drulet at Canadian Tire store for $900 and the ones at the other places where over $1300

Pacific Energy stoves, made in British Columbia are pricey but are worth every dollar in my opinion. We live in Ontario in a limestone house and have used wood for the past 40 years with little to no backup. Roughly 7 cords a winter.

Great content, you should also add in another video of oil vs wood, and wood pellets vs wood. One other thing is that when ever you burn a fuel, carbon monoxide is released, either directly in your area, or remote locations (power generation plants). So the. Point of emissions is at best muted.

It was my pleasure, now that we are starting to heat our home with wood, vs wood pellets or oil. I know I’m behind the 8 ball this year for gathering my wood, so I’m buying it at this time for 215.00 per cord, and that is still green, but next year I hope to collect, cut and split all of my own wood. Last year we went through 6 tons of pellets, and I’m curious about how many cords of wood that would equal. After hurricane Sandy we lost our oil boiler, but the year before heating our home cost us 12,000 dollars, vs the 1600.00 of wood pellets and the cost of the first pellet stove, 3years later we added a second pellet stove to help balance the heat of the house, and again saw some savings in the purchase of the amount of pellets, because we were burning less pellets in two different parts of the house, then the year before trying to move the air throughput the house and running the stove full blast. Any and all tips are greatly appreciated thank you again for posting this type of information!

What region are your energy costs/consumption numbers based on? I use Trembling Aspen because I have tons of it on the ranch, but if I were to buy birch, it is as much as $500/cord.

He said a furnace has no carbon monoxide. This is not true. A fuel fired furnace does burn oxygen. And lack of air intake, will still cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Also they can leak. Always check after earthquake. Or aged units. Electric furnace does not have this issue.
@American-OutdoorsNet
@American-OutdoorsNet 4 жыл бұрын
Kay Ci correct, an electric furnace produces no carbon monoxide. We did earlier segments on fuel fired furnaces, which can create toxic emissions.
