I take on tree jobs that pay me and I take the wood home to burn. When you do it that way its well worth it. Cheers

We do have a heat pump and we could use propane but in the winter we turn the heat pump way down and depend on our wood stove to provide the majority of our heat. We do have access to a virtually unlimited supply of wood so it costs us very little.

Nice! That’s the best way to do it right there.

i cut all my firewood from trees on my 10 acres, using the mostly mediocre quality firewood to supplement what my geothermal unit can provide. it cuts my heating costs in half but in truth, if i didn't semi enjoy the process, i wouldn't bother since it doesn't really cost that much to heat w/ a geothermal furnace. all that said, i'd say the wood heats me up 6 or 7 times lol. got the initial dropping of the tree, cutting it up into pieces small enuf to carry to the tractor bucket then cutting them up into splittable size pieces then all the handling to get the wood stacked then later back into the tractor bucket then into the house then into the wood burner. feels like there's endless manual labor when it comes to processing/using the firewood. w/ a very streamlined setup, i can see a couple of those steps going away though.

I definitely understand what you’re saying haha. You have to enjoy it at least a little bit haha! Thanks for the comment.

What's up dude! I'd say ultimately, your statement that to you it's more of a lifestyle choice, that's the most legit reason to do it. Getting a workout, having your kids involved in the process, an entire family affair...so when you're sitting around that cozy fire, that's all you guys. Pretty cool.

I agree man. I mean over propane, which is just about the only real option as my house is currently equipped, it is significantly cheaper. But ya, more than anything, it’s a lifestyle.

We started heating with wood last year and primarily got a wood stove for a back up heating source but we love campfires so much it quickly became our primary heating source. We saved right around 50% on our heating bill, National Fuel had to send a meter reader out to confirm our meter reading. On the flip side selling firewood is becoming not worth it at least around my. area. Plenty of old retired guys with nothing to do selling full cords anywhere from 160-250.00. We started selling wood last year and if I didn't like doing it so much, theres no way I'd be doing it for profit because theres not much profit lol.

Depends on your insurance policy! I know in some areas people don't have fire insurance at all and for economic reasons. It's probably a close balance?!

I didn’t even think about home owners insurance and wood stoves causing it to go up. That’s a good point!

My insurance outweighs the benefits to using wood. I burn wood because to me it's freedom from the "Man" and it's also very cozy in Canadian winters. Same reason I'll be the last man standing at the gas pump paying $10/L 🙃

I live in Iowa. We can get very cold here in the winter. I have geothermal to heat and cool my home. I burn wood in my fireplace when the temperature starts dipping down into the 20s at night. I usually burn about 4-5 cord in a normal winter.

I went with wood bc i can always find wood to burn. And very minimal difference in heating the house to 75 or 90 + (have accidentally gotten that hot several times). Central pa. 1 cord of wood 175 avg. Avg under 7 cords a season n can heat house as hot as you want. Electric. 400 a month heating only 1/3rd the house. Oil (baseboard) 1200 a season

first off I am retired and I need the exercise so I get exercise bonus number one so you cant count my time. Number 2 I own 160 acres of land of witch 120 is woodland so no cost to harvest the wood. 3rd my equipment is old its already paid for itself years ago. Number 4 it cost out of pocket 10 gallons of gas. Am not sure where you get your cost to heat with say oil ,here it would cost me for oil , that being 5 full tanks of oil at 1000 bucks a tank . I live in norther Canada and our winter alone temps are often 30, 40 below all winter . So ya heating with wood is great, plus you cant beat this type of heat no how.

I have 4 Stihl saws and don't really like them so I bought a Husqvarna but they are ripping their customers off so if I buy anything else it will be an Echo.

Time is not free and you don't get it back.. to be fair to the other heating systems you don't have to put time in you need to include a pay rate to your time.
