I know this song by heart. A song I learned in 6th grade taught to us by Maam Arabela Taquiso, my music teacher.

This was written and composed by the immortal Irving Berlin who wrote the God Bless America. Irving wrote and dedicated Heaven Watched the Philippines to the Filipino people after the liberation of the country which started in the Leyte landing.

My teacher in elementary taught this song to us. We sung it after singing national anthem and panatang makabayan and also we sung it before the start of first subject in the morning. We were taught to sing and read the note of any song.

The story as I read in a magazine somewhere when I was in grade school, is it started when Irving heard Filipino children just after the war singing "God Bless America" but changed "America" to "Philippines". He felt pity that the country doesn't have its own anthem and had to borrow one from a standard tune of his, so he wrote "Heaven Watch the Philippines" specifically for that reason, which eventually turned into a dedication of sorts to Douglas McArthur for the liberation of the country.

Correction please. The Philippines has its national anthem written in 3 languages - Spanish, English, and Filipino. Please note that during and right after World War 2, the Philippines is still TOTALLY a U.S. colony and the substitution of America to The Philippines is practically a given.

@@manuelmoraleda9684 I'm sorry but is your response for me? You might have replied on the wrong thread. I'm not speaking of a national anthem. The "anthem" I'm referring to is a jingle of a tune they want to be use to sing for some ceremonial event. It's not meant to replace a national anthem of the country, but to be some sort of a symbol of the zeitgeist of their times, since it has the word "God" and that fits in to the deeply religious undertones of the people.

@Maikeru110572 I was responding to that line - "He felt pity that the country does not have its own national anthem..."

@@manuelmoraleda9684 to clarify, I'm not referring to the national anthem, as mentioned awhile back above.

No! This song was made in 1945. How old was Imelda then? She was only 14 and was based in Leyte-so far away from the lights and glitz of Manila. How can we be ignorant in these days of the internet?
